Vikhr: The Family of Open-Source Instruction-Tuned Large Language Models for RussianAleksandr Nikolich, Konstantin Korolev, Sergei Bratchikov et al.
There has been a surge in the development of various Large Language Models (LLMs). However, text generation for languages other than English often faces significant challenges, including poor generation quality and reduced computational performance due to the disproportionate representation of tokens in the model's vocabulary. In this work, we address these issues by developing a pipeline for the adaptation of English-oriented pre-trained models to other languages and constructing efficient bilingual LLMs. Using this pipeline, we construct Vikhr, a series of bilingual open-source instruction-following LLMs designed specifically for the Russian language. ``Vikhr'' refers to the name of the Mistral LLM series and means a ``strong gust of wind.'' Unlike previous Russian-language models that typically rely on LoRA adapters on top of English-oriented models, sacrificing performance for lower training costs, Vikhr features an adapted tokenizer vocabulary and undergoes the continued pre-training and instruction tuning of all weights. This not only enhances the model's performance but also significantly improves its computational and contextual efficiency. We also expanded the instruction datasets and corpora for continued pre-training. The model weights, instruction sets, and code are publicly available.

DOoM: Difficult Olympiads of MathIlya Kuleshov, Ilin Pavel, Nikolay Kompanets et al.
This paper introduces DOoM, a new open-source benchmark designed to assess the capabilities of language models in solving mathematics and physics problems in Russian. The benchmark includes problems of varying difficulty, ranging from school-level tasks to university Olympiad and entrance exam questions. In this paper we discuss the motivation behind its creation, describe dataset's structure and evaluation methodology, and present initial results from testing various models. Analysis of the results shows a correlation between model performance and the number of tokens used, and highlights differences in performance between mathematics and physics tasks.

Emojich -- zero-shot emoji generation using Russian language: a technical reportAlex Shonenkov, Daria Bakshandaeva, Denis Dimitrov et al.
This technical report presents a text-to-image neural network "Emojich" that generates emojis using captions in Russian language as a condition. We aim to keep the generalization ability of a pretrained big model ruDALL-E Malevich (XL) 1.3B parameters at the fine-tuning stage, while giving special style to the images generated. Here are presented some engineering methods, code realization, all hyper-parameters for reproducing results and a Telegram bot where everyone can create their own customized sets of stickers. Also, some newly generated emojis obtained by "Emojich" model are demonstrated.
