RNGDet++: Road Network Graph Detection by Transformer with Instance Segmentation and Multi-scale Features Enhancement

The road network graph is a critical component for downstream tasks in autonomous driving, such as global route planning and navigation. In the past years, road network graphs are usually annotated by human experts manually, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To annotate road network graphs effectively and efficiently, automatic algorithms for road network graph detection are demanded. Most existing methods either adopt a post-processing step on semantic segmentation maps to produce road network graphs, or propose graph-based algorithms to directly predict the graphs. However, these works suffer from hard-coded algorithms and inferior performance. To enhance the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) method RNGDet, we add an instance segmentation head to better supervise the training, and enable the network to leverage multi-scale features of the backbone. Since the new proposed approach is improved from RNGDet, we name it RNGDet++. Experimental results show that our RNGDet++ outperforms baseline methods in terms of almost all evaluation metrics on two large-scale public datasets. CenterLineDet: CenterLine Graph Detection for Road Lanes with Vehicle-mounted Sensors by Transformer for HD Map Generation

With the fast development of autonomous driving technologies, there is an increasing demand for high-definition (HD) maps, which provide reliable and robust prior information about the static part of the traffic environments. As one of the important elements in HD maps, road lane centerline is critical for downstream tasks, such as prediction and planning. Manually annotating centerlines for road lanes in HD maps is labor-intensive, expensive and inefficient, severely restricting the wide applications of autonomous driving systems. Previous work seldom explores the lane centerline detection problem due to the complicated topology and severe overlapping issues of lane centerlines. In this paper, we propose a novel method named CenterLineDet to detect lane centerlines for automatic HD map generation. Our CenterLineDet is trained by imitation learning and can effectively detect the graph of centerlines with vehicle-mounted sensors (i.e., six cameras and one LiDAR) through iterations. Due to the use of the DETR-like transformer network, CenterLineDet can handle complicated graph topology, such as lane intersections. The proposed approach is evaluated on the large-scale public dataset NuScenes. The superiority of our CenterLineDet is demonstrated by the comparative results. A Dynamic Points Removal Benchmark in Point Cloud Maps

In the field of robotics, the point cloud has become an essential map representation. From the perspective of downstream tasks like localization and global path planning, points corresponding to dynamic objects will adversely affect their performance. Existing methods for removing dynamic points in point clouds often lack clarity in comparative evaluations and comprehensive analysis. Therefore, we propose an easy-to-extend unified benchmarking framework for evaluating techniques for removing dynamic points in maps. It includes refactored state-of-art methods and novel metrics to analyze the limitations of these approaches. This enables researchers to dive deep into the underlying reasons behind these limitations. The benchmark makes use of several datasets with different sensor types. All the code and datasets related to our study are publicly available for further development and utilization.

FSNet: Redesign Self-Supervised MonoDepth for Full-Scale Depth Prediction for Autonomous Driving

Predicting accurate depth with monocular images is important for low-cost robotic applications and autonomous driving. This study proposes a comprehensive self-supervised framework for accurate scale-aware depth prediction on autonomous driving scenes utilizing inter-frame poses obtained from inertial measurements. In particular, we introduce a Full-Scale depth prediction network named FSNet. FSNet contains four important improvements over existing self-supervised models: (1) a multichannel output representation for stable training of depth prediction in driving scenarios, (2) an optical-flow-based mask designed for dynamic object removal, (3) a self-distillation training strategy to augment the training process, and (4) an optimization-based post-processing algorithm in test time, fusing the results from visual odometry. With this framework, robots and vehicles with only one well-calibrated camera can collect sequences of training image frames and camera poses, and infer accurate 3D depths of the environment without extra labeling work or 3D data. Extensive experiments on the KITTI dataset, KITTI-360 dataset and the nuScenes dataset demonstrate the potential of FSNet. MMFN: Multi-Modal-Fusion-Net for End-to-End Driving

Inspired by the fact that humans use diverse sensory organs to perceive the world, sensors with different modalities are deployed in end-to-end driving to obtain the global context of the 3D scene. In previous works, camera and LiDAR inputs are fused through transformers for better driving performance. These inputs are normally further interpreted as high-level map information to assist navigation tasks. Nevertheless, extracting useful information from the complex map input is challenging, for redundant information may mislead the agent and negatively affect driving performance. We propose a novel approach to efficiently extract features from vectorized High-Definition (HD) maps and utilize them in the end-to-end driving tasks. In addition, we design a new expert to further enhance the model performance by considering multi-road rules. Experimental results prove that both of the proposed improvements enable our agent to achieve superior performance compared with other methods.

TactileReflex: Noise-Statistics-Driven Vision-Tactile Reflex Control for Force-Sensitive Manipulation

Manipulating fragile deformable containers, such as disposable plastic cups filled with liquid, demands real-time grip-force adaptation within an extremely narrow force margin: insufficient force causes slip, while excessive force irreversibly deforms the thin wall. Existing approaches struggle to achieve such force-sensitive manipulation tasks. We propose a noise-statistics-based calibration-driven reflex control paradigm with vision-based tactile sensing: by analyzing the sensor's intrinsic noise characteristics (via a brief static-hold-and-unload protocol), we directly derive all controller thresholds, eliminating external force calibration, trial-and-error manual tuning, or material-specific physical models. Instantiating this paradigm, we present TactileReflex, a three-channel closed-loop controller that extracts three image-level proxies, shear intensity ($S_y$), contact intensity ($F_n$), and center of pressure ($C$), from dual visuo-tactile sensors and drives prioritized reflex channels at ~12 Hz for slip suppression, weight-adaptive release, and force protection. Each channel closes the loop directly on its proxy via noise-derived thresholds. Ablation demonstrates that only the full three-channel system is able to prevent irreversible container deformation (5/5 success vs. at most 1/5 for partial configurations). In a dynamic pouring task, fixed-effort baselines fail in all 10 attempts due to pose drift, while TactileReflex achieves 9/10 success across two water volumes. As a self-contained and interpretable controller, TactileReflex can serve as a plug-and-play safety layer beneath high-level manipulation pipelines, including haptic-free VR teleoperation and vision-language-action (VLA) policies.

An Efficient Approach to the Online Multi-Agent Path Finding Problem by Using Sustainable Information

Multi-agent path finding (MAPF) is the problem of moving agents to the goal vertex without collision. In the online MAPF problem, new agents may be added to the environment at any time, and the current agents have no information about future agents. The inability of existing online methods to reuse previous planning contexts results in redundant computation and reduces algorithm efficiency. Hence, we propose a three-level approach to solve online MAPF utilizing sustainable information, which can decrease its redundant calculations. The high-level solver, the Sustainable Replan algorithm (SR), manages the planning context and simulates the environment. The middle-level solver, the Sustainable Conflict-Based Search algorithm (SCBS), builds a conflict tree and maintains the planning context. The low-level solver, the Sustainable Reverse Safe Interval Path Planning algorithm (SRSIPP), is an efficient single-agent solver that uses previous planning context to reduce duplicate calculations. Experiments show that our proposed method has significant improvement in terms of computational efficiency. In one of the test scenarios, our algorithm can be 1.48 times faster than SOTA on average under different agent number settings.

Real-Time Metric-Semantic Mapping for Autonomous Navigation in Outdoor Environments

The creation of a metric-semantic map, which encodes human-prior knowledge, represents a high-level abstraction of environments. However, constructing such a map poses challenges related to the fusion of multi-modal sensor data, the attainment of real-time mapping performance, and the preservation of structural and semantic information consistency. In this paper, we introduce an online metric-semantic mapping system that utilizes LiDAR-Visual-Inertial sensing to generate a global metric-semantic mesh map of large-scale outdoor environments. Leveraging GPU acceleration, our mapping process achieves exceptional speed, with frame processing taking less than 7ms, regardless of scenario scale. Furthermore, we seamlessly integrate the resultant map into a real-world navigation system, enabling metric-semantic-based terrain assessment and autonomous point-to-point navigation within a campus environment. Through extensive experiments conducted on both publicly available and self-collected datasets comprising 24 sequences, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our mapping and navigation methodologies. HCSG: Human-Centric Semantic-Geometric Reasoning for Vision-Language Navigation

VLN has achieved remarkable progress by scaling data and model capacity. However, the assumption of a static environment breaks down in real-world indoor scenarios, where robots inevitably encounter dynamic pedestrians. Existing human-aware approaches typically treat humans merely as moving obstacles based on implicit visual cues, lacking the explicit reasoning required to interpret human intentions or maintain social norms. To address this, we propose HCSG, the first human-centric framework for VLN. This framework provides a robust foundation for safe, socially intelligent navigation in dynamic human-robot environments that shifts the paradigm from passive collision avoidance to active human behavior understanding. Specifically, HCSG introduces a unified Human Understanding Module that synergizes two key capabilities: (i) geometric forecasting, which predicts human pose and trajectory to anticipate future motion dynamics; and (ii) semantic interpretation, which leverages a Vision-Language Model (VLM) to generate natural language descriptions of human actions and intentions. These semantic-geometric representations are fused into the agent's topological map for instruction-conditioned planning. Furthermore, a social distance loss is introduced to enforce socially compliant interaction distances. Extensive experiments on the HA-VLNCE benchmark demonstrate that HCSG significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving a 14% improvement in Success Rate and a 34% reduction in Collision Rate. LucidFlux: Caption-Free Universal Image Restoration via a Large-Scale Diffusion Transformer

Universal image restoration (UIR) aims to recover images degraded by unknown mixtures while preserving semantics -- conditions under which discriminative restorers and UNet-based diffusion priors often oversmooth, hallucinate, or drift. We present LucidFlux, a caption-free UIR framework that adapts a large diffusion transformer (Flux.1) without image captions. LucidFlux introduces a lightweight dual-branch conditioner that injects signals from the degraded input and a lightly restored proxy to respectively anchor geometry and suppress artifacts. Then, a timestep- and layer-adaptive modulation schedule is designed to route these cues across the backbone's hierarchy, in order to yield coarse-to-fine and context-aware updates that protect the global structure while recovering texture. After that, to avoid the latency and instability of text prompts or MLLM captions, we enforce caption-free semantic alignment via SigLIP features extracted from the proxy. A scalable curation pipeline further filters large-scale data for structure-rich supervision. Across synthetic and in-the-wild benchmarks, LucidFlux consistently outperforms strong open-source and commercial baselines, and ablation studies verify the necessity of each component. LucidFlux shows that, for large DiTs, when, where, and what to condition on -- rather than adding parameters or relying on text prompts -- is the governing lever for robust and caption-free universal image restoration in the wild.

YOLOStereo3D: A Step Back to 2D for Efficient Stereo 3D Detection

Object detection in 3D with stereo cameras is an important problem in computer vision, and is particularly crucial in low-cost autonomous mobile robots without LiDARs. Nowadays, most of the best-performing frameworks for stereo 3D object detection are based on dense depth reconstruction from disparity estimation, making them extremely computationally expensive. To enable real-world deployments of vision detection with binocular images, we take a step back to gain insights from 2D image-based detection frameworks and enhance them with stereo features. We incorporate knowledge and the inference structure from real-time one-stage 2D/3D object detector and introduce a light-weight stereo matching module. Our proposed framework, YOLOStereo3D, is trained on one single GPU and runs at more than ten fps. It demonstrates performance comparable to state-of-the-art stereo 3D detection frameworks without usage of LiDAR data. The code will be published in https://github.com/Owen-Liuyuxuan/visualDet3D.

Quantifying intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity of glioblastoma toward precision medicine using MRI and a data-inclusive machine learning algorithm

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive and lethal human cancers. Intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity poses a significant challenge for treatment. Biopsy is invasive, which motivates the development of non-invasive, MRI-based machine learning (ML) models to quantify intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity for each patient. This capability holds great promise for enabling better therapeutic selection to improve patient outcomes. We proposed a novel Weakly Supervised Ordinal Support Vector Machine (WSO-SVM) to predict regional genetic alteration status within each GBM tumor using MRI. WSO-SVM was applied to a unique dataset of 318 image-localized biopsies with spatially matched multiparametric MRI from 74 GBM patients. The model was trained to predict the regional genetic alteration of three GBM driver genes (EGFR, PDGFRA, and PTEN) based on features extracted from the corresponding region of five MRI contrast images. For comparison, a variety of existing ML algorithms were also applied. The classification accuracy of each gene was compared between the different algorithms. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method was further applied to compute contribution scores of different contrast images. Finally, the trained WSO-SVM was used to generate prediction maps within the tumoral area of each patient to help visualize the intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using MRI and WSO-SVM to enable non-invasive prediction of intra-tumoral regional genetic alteration for each GBM patient, which can inform future adaptive therapies for individualized oncology.

MGCBS: An Optimal and Efficient Algorithm for Solving Multi-Goal Multi-Agent Path Finding Problem

With the expansion of the scale of robotics applications, the multi-goal multi-agent pathfinding (MG-MAPF) problem began to gain widespread attention. This problem requires each agent to visit pre-assigned multiple goal points at least once without conflict. Some previous methods have been proposed to solve the MG-MAPF problem based on Decoupling the goal Vertex visiting order search and the Single-agent pathfinding (DVS). However, this paper demonstrates that the methods based on DVS cannot always obtain the optimal solution. To obtain the optimal result, we propose the Multi-Goal Conflict-Based Search (MGCBS), which is based on Decoupling the goal Safe interval visiting order search and the Single-agent pathfinding (DSS). Additionally, we present the Time-Interval-Space Forest (TIS Forest) to enhance the efficiency of MGCBS by maintaining the shortest paths from any start point at any start time step to each safe interval at the goal points. The experiment demonstrates that our method can consistently obtain optimal results and execute up to 7 times faster than the state-of-the-art method in our evaluation.

A Novel Hybrid Ordinal Learning Model with Health Care Application

Ordinal learning (OL) is a type of machine learning models with broad utility in health care applications such as diagnosis of different grades of a disease (e.g., mild, modest, severe) and prediction of the speed of disease progression (e.g., very fast, fast, moderate, slow). This paper aims to tackle a situation when precisely labeled samples are limited in the training set due to cost or availability constraints, whereas there could be an abundance of samples with imprecise labels. We focus on imprecise labels that are intervals, i.e., one can know that a sample belongs to an interval of labels but cannot know which unique label it has. This situation is quite common in health care datasets due to limitations of the diagnostic instrument, sparse clinical visits, or/and patient dropout. Limited research has been done to develop OL models with imprecise/interval labels. We propose a new Hybrid Ordinal Learner (HOL) to integrate samples with both precise and interval labels to train a robust OL model. We also develop a tractable and efficient optimization algorithm to solve the HOL formulation. We compare HOL with several recently developed OL methods on four benchmarking datasets, which demonstrate the superior performance of HOL. Finally, we apply HOL to a real-world dataset for predicting the speed of progressing to Alzheimer's Disease (AD) for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) based on a combination of multi-modality neuroimaging and demographic/clinical datasets. HOL achieves high accuracy in the prediction and outperforms existing methods. The capability of accurately predicting the speed of progression to AD for each individual with MCI has the potential for helping facilitate more individually-optimized interventional strategies.

PosterReward: Unlocking Accurate Evaluation for High-Quality Graphic Design Generation

Recent advancements in the text-rendering capabilities of image generation models have made the end-to-end creation of graphic design content, such as posters, increasingly feasible. However, existing reward models fall short of accurately assessing design quality, as they primarily focus on global image aesthetics while overlooking the critical dimensions of typography and layout. Furthermore, the scarcity of domain-specific preference data remains a significant bottleneck, which limits the further development of graphic design evaluation and generation. To bridge this gap, we introduce an automated pipeline to construct a high-quality dataset of 70k poster preferences by leveraging the consensus of multiple Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to simulate human-like judgment. Utilizing this dataset, we develop PosterReward, a reward model specifically designed for high-precision poster assessment through a cascaded, multi-stage training strategy. We also provide multiple variants of the model to cater to different application scenarios. Finally, we introduce PosterRewardBench and PosterBench to evaluate the performance of existing reward models in poster assessment and the generation capabilities of current text-to-image models in poster creation, respectively.

RNGDet: Road Network Graph Detection by Transformer in Aerial Images

Road network graphs provide critical information for autonomous-vehicle applications, such as drivable areas that can be used for motion planning algorithms. To find road network graphs, manually annotation is usually inefficient and labor-intensive. Automatically detecting road network graphs could alleviate this issue, but existing works still have some limitations. For example, segmentation-based approaches could not ensure satisfactory topology correctness, and graph-based approaches could not present precise enough detection results. To provide a solution to these problems, we propose a novel approach based on transformer and imitation learning in this paper. In view of that high-resolution aerial images could be easily accessed all over the world nowadays, we make use of aerial images in our approach. Taken as input an aerial image, our approach iteratively generates road network graphs vertex-by-vertex. Our approach can handle complicated intersection points with various numbers of incident road segments. We evaluate our approach on a publicly available dataset. The superiority of our approach is demonstrated through the comparative experiments. csBoundary: City-scale Road-boundary Detection in Aerial Images for High-definition Maps

High-Definition (HD) maps can provide precise geometric and semantic information of static traffic environments for autonomous driving. Road-boundary is one of the most important information contained in HD maps since it distinguishes between road areas and off-road areas, which can guide vehicles to drive within road areas. But it is labor-intensive to annotate road boundaries for HD maps at the city scale. To enable automatic HD map annotation, current work uses semantic segmentation or iterative graph growing for road-boundary detection. However, the former could not ensure topological correctness since it works at the pixel level, while the latter suffers from inefficiency and drifting issues. To provide a solution to the aforementioned problems, in this letter, we propose a novel system termed csBoundary to automatically detect road boundaries at the city scale for HD map annotation. Our network takes as input an aerial image patch, and directly infers the continuous road-boundary graph (i.e., vertices and edges) from this image. To generate the city-scale road-boundary graph, we stitch the obtained graphs from all the image patches. Our csBoundary is evaluated and compared on a public benchmark dataset. On Bundle Adjustment for Multiview PointCloud Registration

Multiview registration is used to estimate Rigid Body Transformations (RBTs) from multiple frames and reconstruct a scene with corresponding scans. Despite the success of pairwise registration and pose synchronization, the concept of Bundle Adjustment (BA) has been proven to better maintain global consistency. So in this work, we make the multiview point-cloud registration more tractable from a different perspective in resolving range-based BA. Based on this analysis, we propose an objective function that takes both measurement noises and computational cost into account. For the feature parameter update, instead of calculating the global distribution parameters from the raw measurements, we aggregate the local distributions upon the pose update at each iteration. The computational cost of feature update is then only dependent on the number of scans. Finally, we develop a multiview registration system using voxel-based quantization that can be applied in real-world scenarios. The experimental results demonstrate our superiority over the baselines in terms of both accuracy and speed. Moreover, the results also show that our average positioning errors achieve the centimeter level.

Incorporating Learnt Local and Global Embeddings into Monocular Visual SLAM

Traditional approaches for Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) rely on low-level vision information for state estimation, such as handcrafted local features or the image gradient. While significant progress has been made through this track, under more challenging configuration for monocular VSLAM, e.g., varying illumination, the performance of state-of-the-art systems generally degrades. As a consequence, robustness and accuracy for monocular VSLAM are still widely concerned. This paper presents a monocular VSLAM system that fully exploits learnt features for better state estimation. The proposed system leverages both learnt local features and global embeddings at different modules of the system: direct camera pose estimation, inter-frame feature association, and loop closure detection. With a probabilistic explanation of keypoint prediction, we formulate the camera pose tracking in a direct manner and parameterize local features with uncertainty taken into account. To alleviate the quantization effect, we adapt the mapping module to generate 3D landmarks better to guarantee the system's robustness. Detecting temporal loop closure via deep global embeddings further improves the robustness and accuracy of the proposed system. The proposed system is extensively evaluated on public datasets (Tsukuba, EuRoC, and KITTI), and compared against the state-of-the-art methods. The competitive performance of camera pose estimation confirms the effectiveness of our method.

CP-loss: Connectivity-preserving Loss for Road Curb Detection in Autonomous Driving with Aerial Images

Road curb detection is important for autonomous driving. It can be used to determine road boundaries to constrain vehicles on roads, so that potential accidents could be avoided. Most of the current methods detect road curbs online using vehicle-mounted sensors, such as cameras or 3-D Lidars. However, these methods usually suffer from severe occlusion issues. Especially in highly-dynamic traffic environments, most of the field of view is occupied by dynamic objects. To alleviate this issue, we detect road curbs offline using high-resolution aerial images in this paper. Moreover, the detected road curbs can be used to create high-definition (HD) maps for autonomous vehicles. Specifically, we first predict the pixel-wise segmentation map of road curbs, and then conduct a series of post-processing steps to extract the graph structure of road curbs. To tackle the disconnectivity issue in the segmentation maps, we propose an innovative connectivity-preserving loss (CP-loss) to improve the segmentation performance. The experimental results on a public dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed loss function. Learning Interpretable End-to-End Vision-Based Motion Planning for Autonomous Driving with Optical Flow Distillation

Recently, deep-learning based approaches have achieved impressive performance for autonomous driving. However, end-to-end vision-based methods typically have limited interpretability, making the behaviors of the deep networks difficult to explain. Hence, their potential applications could be limited in practice. To address this problem, we propose an interpretable end-to-end vision-based motion planning approach for autonomous driving, referred to as IVMP. Given a set of past surrounding-view images, our IVMP first predicts future egocentric semantic maps in bird's-eye-view space, which are then employed to plan trajectories for self-driving vehicles. The predicted future semantic maps not only provide useful interpretable information, but also allow our motion planning module to handle objects with low probability, thus improving the safety of autonomous driving. Moreover, we also develop an optical flow distillation paradigm, which can effectively enhance the network while still maintaining its real-time performance. Extensive experiments on the nuScenes dataset and closed-loop simulation show that our IVMP significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in imitating human drivers with a much higher success rate. Greedy-Based Feature Selection for Efficient LiDAR SLAM

Modern LiDAR-SLAM (L-SLAM) systems have shown excellent results in large-scale, real-world scenarios. However, they commonly have a high latency due to the expensive data association and nonlinear optimization. This paper demonstrates that actively selecting a subset of features significantly improves both the accuracy and efficiency of an L-SLAM system. We formulate the feature selection as a combinatorial optimization problem under a cardinality constraint to preserve the information matrix's spectral attributes. The stochastic-greedy algorithm is applied to approximate the optimal results in real-time. To avoid ill-conditioned estimation, we also propose a general strategy to evaluate the environment's degeneracy and modify the feature number online. The proposed feature selector is integrated into a multi-LiDAR SLAM system. We validate this enhanced system with extensive experiments covering various scenarios on two sensor setups and computation platforms. We show that our approach exhibits low localization error and speedup compared to the state-of-the-art L-SLAM systems. Peer-Assisted Robotic Learning: A Data-Driven Collaborative Learning Approach for Cloud Robotic Systems

A technological revolution is occurring in the field of robotics with the data-driven deep learning technology. However, building datasets for each local robot is laborious. Meanwhile, data islands between local robots make data unable to be utilized collaboratively. To address this issue, the work presents Peer-Assisted Robotic Learning (PARL) in robotics, which is inspired by the peer-assisted learning in cognitive psychology and pedagogy. PARL implements data collaboration with the framework of cloud robotic systems. Both data and models are shared by robots to the cloud after semantic computing and training locally. The cloud converges the data and performs augmentation, integration, and transferring. Finally, fine tune this larger shared dataset in the cloud to local robots. Furthermore, we propose the DAT Network (Data Augmentation and Transferring Network) to implement the data processing in PARL. DAT Network can realize the augmentation of data from multi-local robots. We conduct experiments on a simplified self-driving task for robots (cars). DAT Network has a significant improvement in the augmentation in self-driving scenarios. Along with this, the self-driving experimental results also demonstrate that PARL is capable of improving learning effects with data collaboration of local robots.

The Role of the Hercules Autonomous Vehicle During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Autonomous Logistic Vehicle for Contactless Goods Transportation

Since early 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly across the world. As at the date of writing this article, the disease has been globally reported in 223 countries and regions, infected over 108 million people and caused over 2.4 million deaths (https://covid19.who.int/, accessed on Feb. 17, 2021). Avoiding person-to-person transmission is an effective approach to control and prevent the pandemic. However, many daily activities, such as transporting goods in our daily life, inevitably involve person-to-person contact. Using an autonomous logistic vehicle to achieve contact-less goods transportation could alleviate this issue. For example, it can reduce the risk of virus transmission between the driver and customers. Moreover, many countries have imposed tough lockdown measures to reduce the virus transmission (e.g., retail, catering) during the pandemic, which causes inconveniences for human daily life. Autonomous vehicle can deliver the goods bought by humans, so that humans can get the goods without going out. These demands motivate us to develop an autonomous vehicle, named as Hercules, for contact-less goods transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vehicle is evaluated through real-world delivering tasks under various traffic conditions.

Federated Imitation Learning: A Novel Framework for Cloud Robotic Systems with Heterogeneous Sensor Data

Humans are capable of learning a new behavior by observing others to perform the skill. Similarly, robots can also implement this by imitation learning. Furthermore, if with external guidance, humans can master the new behavior more efficiently. So, how can robots achieve this? To address the issue, we present a novel framework named FIL. It provides a heterogeneous knowledge fusion mechanism for cloud robotic systems. Then, a knowledge fusion algorithm in FIL is proposed. It enables the cloud to fuse heterogeneous knowledge from local robots and generate guide models for robots with service requests. After that, we introduce a knowledge transfer scheme to facilitate local robots acquiring knowledge from the cloud. With FIL, a robot is capable of utilizing knowledge from other robots to increase its imitation learning in accuracy and efficiency. Compared with transfer learning and meta-learning, FIL is more suitable to be deployed in cloud robotic systems. Finally, we conduct experiments of a self-driving task for robots (cars). The experimental results demonstrate that the shared model generated by FIL increases imitation learning efficiency of local robots in cloud robotic systems.

A Robust Stereo Camera Localization Method with Prior LiDAR Map Constrains

In complex environments, low-cost and robust localization is a challenging problem. For example, in a GPSdenied environment, LiDAR can provide accurate position information, but the cost is high. In general, visual SLAM based localization methods become unreliable when the sunlight changes greatly. Therefore, inexpensive and reliable methods are required. In this paper, we propose a stereo visual localization method based on the prior LiDAR map. Different from the conventional visual localization system, we design a novel visual optimization model by matching planar information between the LiDAR map and visual image. Bundle adjustment is built by using coplanarity constraints. To solve the optimization problem, we use a graph-based optimization algorithm and a local window optimization method. Finally, we estimate a full six degrees of freedom (DOF) pose without scale drift. To validate the efficiency, the proposed method has been tested on the KITTI dataset. The results show that our method is more robust and accurate than the state-of-art ORB-SLAM2.

Federated Imitation Learning: A Privacy Considered Imitation Learning Framework for Cloud Robotic Systems with Heterogeneous Sensor Data

A Robust Roll Angle Estimation Algorithm Based on Gradient Descent

This paper presents a robust roll angle estimation algorithm, which is developed from our previously published work, where the roll angle was estimated from a dense disparity map by minimizing a global energy using golden section search algorithm. In this paper, to achieve greater computational efficiency, we utilize gradient descent to optimize the aforementioned global energy. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed roll angle estimation algorithm takes fewer iterations to achieve the same precision as the previous method.

A Novel Dual-Lidar Calibration Algorithm Using Planar Surfaces

Multiple lidars are prevalently used on mobile vehicles for rendering a broad view to enhance the performance of localization and perception systems. However, precise calibration of multiple lidars is challenging since the feature correspondences in scan points cannot always provide enough constraints. To address this problem, the existing methods require fixed calibration targets in scenes or rely exclusively on additional sensors. In this paper, we present a novel method that enables automatic lidar calibration without these restrictions. Three linearly independent planar surfaces appearing in surroundings is utilized to find correspondences. Two components are developed to ensure the extrinsic parameters to be found: a closed-form solver for initialization and an optimizer for refinement by minimizing a nonlinear cost function. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy of our calibration approach with the rotation and translation errors smaller than 0.05rad and 0.1m respectively.

Lifelong Federated Reinforcement Learning: A Learning Architecture for Navigation in Cloud Robotic Systems

This paper was motivated by the problem of how to make robots fuse and transfer their experience so that they can effectively use prior knowledge and quickly adapt to new environments. To address the problem, we present a learning architecture for navigation in cloud robotic systems: Lifelong Federated Reinforcement Learning (LFRL). In the work, We propose a knowledge fusion algorithm for upgrading a shared model deployed on the cloud. Then, effective transfer learning methods in LFRL are introduced. LFRL is consistent with human cognitive science and fits well in cloud robotic systems. Experiments show that LFRL greatly improves the efficiency of reinforcement learning for robot navigation. The cloud robotic system deployment also shows that LFRL is capable of fusing prior knowledge. In addition, we release a cloud robotic navigation-learning website based on LFRL.

Multiple Lane Detection Algorithm Based on Optimised Dense Disparity Map Estimation

Lane detection is very important for self-driving vehicles. In recent years, computer stereo vision has been prevalently used to enhance the accuracy of the lane detection systems. This paper mainly presents a multiple lane detection algorithm developed based on optimised dense disparity map estimation, where the disparity information obtained at time t_{n} is utilised to optimise the process of disparity estimation at time t_{n+1}. This is achieved by estimating the road model at time t_{n} and then controlling the search range for the disparity estimation at time t_{n+1}. The lanes are then detected using our previously published algorithm, where the vanishing point information is used to model the lanes. The experimental results illustrate that the runtime of the disparity estimation is reduced by around 37% and the accuracy of the lane detection is about 99%.

Real-Time Subpixel Fast Bilateral Stereo

Stereo vision technique has been widely used in robotic systems to acquire 3-D information. In recent years, many researchers have applied bilateral filtering in stereo vision to adaptively aggregate the matching costs. This has greatly improved the accuracy of the estimated disparity maps. However, the process of filtering the whole cost volume is very time consuming and therefore the researchers have to resort to some powerful hardware for the real-time purpose. This paper presents the implementation of fast bilateral stereo on a state-of-the-art GPU. By highly exploiting the parallel computing architecture of the GPU, the fast bilateral stereo performs in real time when processing the Middlebury stereo datasets.

Characterization of a RS-LiDAR for 3D Perception

High precision 3D LiDARs are still expensive and hard to acquire. This paper presents the characteristics of RS-LiDAR, a model of low-cost LiDAR with sufficient supplies, in comparison with VLP-16. The paper also provides a set of evaluations to analyze the characterizations and performances of LiDARs sensors. This work analyzes multiple properties, such as drift effects, distance effects, color effects and sensor orientation effects, in the context of 3D perception. By comparing with Velodyne LiDAR, we found RS-LiDAR as a cheaper and acquirable substitute of VLP-16 with similar efficiency.
