MST++: Multi-stage Spectral-wise Transformer for Efficient Spectral ReconstructionYuanhao Cai, Jing Lin, Zudi Lin et al. · harvard
Existing leading methods for spectral reconstruction (SR) focus on designing deeper or wider convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn the end-to-end mapping from the RGB image to its hyperspectral image (HSI). These CNN-based methods achieve impressive restoration performance while showing limitations in capturing the long-range dependencies and self-similarity prior. To cope with this problem, we propose a novel Transformer-based method, Multi-stage Spectral-wise Transformer (MST++), for efficient spectral reconstruction. In particular, we employ Spectral-wise Multi-head Self-attention (S-MSA) that is based on the HSI spatially sparse while spectrally self-similar nature to compose the basic unit, Spectral-wise Attention Block (SAB). Then SABs build up Single-stage Spectral-wise Transformer (SST) that exploits a U-shaped structure to extract multi-resolution contextual information. Finally, our MST++, cascaded by several SSTs, progressively improves the reconstruction quality from coarse to fine. Comprehensive experiments show that our MST++ significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. In the NTIRE 2022 Spectral Reconstruction Challenge, our approach won the First place. CLIPTrans: Transferring Visual Knowledge with Pre-trained Models for Multimodal Machine TranslationDevaansh Gupta, Siddhant Kharbanda, Jiawei Zhou et al. · microsoft-research, tsinghua
There has been a growing interest in developing multimodal machine translation (MMT) systems that enhance neural machine translation (NMT) with visual knowledge. This problem setup involves using images as auxiliary information during training, and more recently, eliminating their use during inference. Towards this end, previous works face a challenge in training powerful MMT models from scratch due to the scarcity of annotated multilingual vision-language data, especially for low-resource languages. Simultaneously, there has been an influx of multilingual pre-trained models for NMT and multimodal pre-trained models for vision-language tasks, primarily in English, which have shown exceptional generalisation ability. However, these are not directly applicable to MMT since they do not provide aligned multimodal multilingual features for generative tasks. To alleviate this issue, instead of designing complex modules for MMT, we propose CLIPTrans, which simply adapts the independently pre-trained multimodal M-CLIP and the multilingual mBART. In order to align their embedding spaces, mBART is conditioned on the M-CLIP features by a prefix sequence generated through a lightweight mapping network. We train this in a two-stage pipeline which warms up the model with image captioning before the actual translation task. Through experiments, we demonstrate the merits of this framework and consequently push forward the state-of-the-art across standard benchmarks by an average of +2.67 BLEU. A Unified Interactive Model Evaluation for Classification, Object Detection, and Instance Segmentation in Computer VisionChangjian Chen, Yukai Guo, Fengyuan Tian et al. · tsinghua
Existing model evaluation tools mainly focus on evaluating classification models, leaving a gap in evaluating more complex models, such as object detection. In this paper, we develop an open-source visual analysis tool, Uni-Evaluator, to support a unified model evaluation for classification, object detection, and instance segmentation in computer vision. The key idea behind our method is to formulate both discrete and continuous predictions in different tasks as unified probability distributions. Based on these distributions, we develop 1) a matrix-based visualization to provide an overview of model performance; 2) a table visualization to identify the problematic data subsets where the model performs poorly; 3) a grid visualization to display the samples of interest. These visualizations work together to facilitate the model evaluation from a global overview to individual samples. Two case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of Uni-Evaluator in evaluating model performance and making informed improvements.

RibSeg v2: A Large-scale Benchmark for Rib Labeling and Anatomical Centerline ExtractionLiang Jin, Shixuan Gu, Donglai Wei et al. · harvard
Automatic rib labeling and anatomical centerline extraction are common prerequisites for various clinical applications. Prior studies either use in-house datasets that are inaccessible to communities, or focus on rib segmentation that neglects the clinical significance of rib labeling. To address these issues, we extend our prior dataset (RibSeg) on the binary rib segmentation task to a comprehensive benchmark, named RibSeg v2, with 660 CT scans (15,466 individual ribs in total) and annotations manually inspected by experts for rib labeling and anatomical centerline extraction. Based on the RibSeg v2, we develop a pipeline including deep learning-based methods for rib labeling, and a skeletonization-based method for centerline extraction. To improve computational efficiency, we propose a sparse point cloud representation of CT scans and compare it with standard dense voxel grids. Moreover, we design and analyze evaluation metrics to address the key challenges of each task. Interactive and Visual Prompt Engineering for Ad-hoc Task Adaptation with Large Language ModelsHendrik Strobelt, Albert Webson, Victor Sanh et al. · deepmind, ibm-research
State-of-the-art neural language models can now be used to solve ad-hoc language tasks through zero-shot prompting without the need for supervised training. This approach has gained popularity in recent years, and researchers have demonstrated prompts that achieve strong accuracy on specific NLP tasks. However, finding a prompt for new tasks requires experimentation. Different prompt templates with different wording choices lead to significant accuracy differences. PromptIDE allows users to experiment with prompt variations, visualize prompt performance, and iteratively optimize prompts. We developed a workflow that allows users to first focus on model feedback using small data before moving on to a large data regime that allows empirical grounding of promising prompts using quantitative measures of the task. The tool then allows easy deployment of the newly created ad-hoc models. We demonstrate the utility of PromptIDE (demo at http://prompt.vizhub.ai) and our workflow using several real-world use cases.

Learning to Generate Realistic Noisy Images via Pixel-level Noise-aware Adversarial TrainingYuanhao Cai, Xiaowan Hu, Haoqian Wang et al.
Existing deep learning real denoising methods require a large amount of noisy-clean image pairs for supervision. Nonetheless, capturing a real noisy-clean dataset is an unacceptable expensive and cumbersome procedure. To alleviate this problem, this work investigates how to generate realistic noisy images. Firstly, we formulate a simple yet reasonable noise model that treats each real noisy pixel as a random variable. This model splits the noisy image generation problem into two sub-problems: image domain alignment and noise domain alignment. Subsequently, we propose a novel framework, namely Pixel-level Noise-aware Generative Adversarial Network (PNGAN). PNGAN employs a pre-trained real denoiser to map the fake and real noisy images into a nearly noise-free solution space to perform image domain alignment. Simultaneously, PNGAN establishes a pixel-level adversarial training to conduct noise domain alignment. Additionally, for better noise fitting, we present an efficient architecture Simple Multi-scale Network (SMNet) as the generator. Qualitative validation shows that noise generated by PNGAN is highly similar to real noise in terms of intensity and distribution. Quantitative experiments demonstrate that a series of denoisers trained with the generated noisy images achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) results on four real denoising benchmarks. Diagnosing Ensemble Few-Shot ClassifiersWeikai Yang, Xi Ye, Xingxing Zhang et al. · microsoft-research
The base learners and labeled samples (shots) in an ensemble few-shot classifier greatly affect the model performance. When the performance is not satisfactory, it is usually difficult to understand the underlying causes and make improvements. To tackle this issue, we propose a visual analysis method, FSLDiagnotor. Given a set of base learners and a collection of samples with a few shots, we consider two problems: 1) finding a subset of base learners that well predict the sample collections; and 2) replacing the low-quality shots with more representative ones to adequately represent the sample collections. We formulate both problems as sparse subset selection and develop two selection algorithms to recommend appropriate learners and shots, respectively. A matrix visualization and a scatterplot are combined to explain the recommended learners and shots in context and facilitate users in adjusting them. Based on the adjustment, the algorithm updates the recommendation results for another round of improvement. Two case studies are conducted to demonstrate that FSLDiagnotor helps build a few-shot classifier efficiently and increases the accuracy by 12% and 21%, respectively.

QuantArt: Quantizing Image Style Transfer Towards High Visual FidelitySiyu Huang, Jie An, Donglai Wei et al. · harvard
The mechanism of existing style transfer algorithms is by minimizing a hybrid loss function to push the generated image toward high similarities in both content and style. However, this type of approach cannot guarantee visual fidelity, i.e., the generated artworks should be indistinguishable from real ones. In this paper, we devise a new style transfer framework called QuantArt for high visual-fidelity stylization. QuantArt pushes the latent representation of the generated artwork toward the centroids of the real artwork distribution with vector quantization. By fusing the quantized and continuous latent representations, QuantArt allows flexible control over the generated artworks in terms of content preservation, style similarity, and visual fidelity. Experiments on various style transfer settings show that our QuantArt framework achieves significantly higher visual fidelity compared with the existing style transfer methods.

Inference-Time Intervention: Eliciting Truthful Answers from a Language ModelKenneth Li, Oam Patel, Fernanda Viégas et al.
We introduce Inference-Time Intervention (ITI), a technique designed to enhance the "truthfulness" of large language models (LLMs). ITI operates by shifting model activations during inference, following a set of directions across a limited number of attention heads. This intervention significantly improves the performance of LLaMA models on the TruthfulQA benchmark. On an instruction-finetuned LLaMA called Alpaca, ITI improves its truthfulness from 32.5% to 65.1%. We identify a tradeoff between truthfulness and helpfulness and demonstrate how to balance it by tuning the intervention strength. ITI is minimally invasive and computationally inexpensive. Moreover, the technique is data efficient: while approaches like RLHF require extensive annotations, ITI locates truthful directions using only few hundred examples. Our findings suggest that LLMs may have an internal representation of the likelihood of something being true, even as they produce falsehoods on the surface.

Emergent World Representations: Exploring a Sequence Model Trained on a Synthetic TaskKenneth Li, Aspen K. Hopkins, David Bau et al.
Language models show a surprising range of capabilities, but the source of their apparent competence is unclear. Do these networks just memorize a collection of surface statistics, or do they rely on internal representations of the process that generates the sequences they see? We investigate this question by applying a variant of the GPT model to the task of predicting legal moves in a simple board game, Othello. Although the network has no a priori knowledge of the game or its rules, we uncover evidence of an emergent nonlinear internal representation of the board state. Interventional experiments indicate this representation can be used to control the output of the network and create "latent saliency maps" that can help explain predictions in human terms.

Improving generalization by mimicking the human visual dietSpandan Madan, You Li, Mengmi Zhang et al.
We present a new perspective on bridging the generalization gap between biological and computer vision -- mimicking the human visual diet. While computer vision models rely on internet-scraped datasets, humans learn from limited 3D scenes under diverse real-world transformations with objects in natural context. Our results demonstrate that incorporating variations and contextual cues ubiquitous in the human visual training data (visual diet) significantly improves generalization to real-world transformations such as lighting, viewpoint, and material changes. This improvement also extends to generalizing from synthetic to real-world data -- all models trained with a human-like visual diet outperform specialized architectures by large margins when tested on natural image data. These experiments are enabled by our two key contributions: a novel dataset capturing scene context and diverse real-world transformations to mimic the human visual diet, and a transformer model tailored to leverage these aspects of the human visual diet. Domain-Scalable Unpaired Image Translation via Latent Space AnchoringSiyu Huang, Jie An, Donglai Wei et al. · harvard
Unpaired image-to-image translation (UNIT) aims to map images between two visual domains without paired training data. However, given a UNIT model trained on certain domains, it is difficult for current methods to incorporate new domains because they often need to train the full model on both existing and new domains. To address this problem, we propose a new domain-scalable UNIT method, termed as latent space anchoring, which can be efficiently extended to new visual domains and does not need to fine-tune encoders and decoders of existing domains. Our method anchors images of different domains to the same latent space of frozen GANs by learning lightweight encoder and regressor models to reconstruct single-domain images. In the inference phase, the learned encoders and decoders of different domains can be arbitrarily combined to translate images between any two domains without fine-tuning. Experiments on various datasets show that the proposed method achieves superior performance on both standard and domain-scalable UNIT tasks in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.

ShadowDiffusion: When Degradation Prior Meets Diffusion Model for Shadow RemovalLanqing Guo, Chong Wang, Wenhan Yang et al.
Recent deep learning methods have achieved promising results in image shadow removal. However, their restored images still suffer from unsatisfactory boundary artifacts, due to the lack of degradation prior embedding and the deficiency in modeling capacity. Our work addresses these issues by proposing a unified diffusion framework that integrates both the image and degradation priors for highly effective shadow removal. In detail, we first propose a shadow degradation model, which inspires us to build a novel unrolling diffusion model, dubbed ShandowDiffusion. It remarkably improves the model's capacity in shadow removal via progressively refining the desired output with both degradation prior and diffusive generative prior, which by nature can serve as a new strong baseline for image restoration. Furthermore, ShadowDiffusion progressively refines the estimated shadow mask as an auxiliary task of the diffusion generator, which leads to more accurate and robust shadow-free image generation. We conduct extensive experiments on three popular public datasets, including ISTD, ISTD+, and SRD, to validate our method's effectiveness. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, our model achieves a significant improvement in terms of PSNR, increasing from 31.69dB to 34.73dB over SRD dataset.

Instance Segmentation of Unlabeled Modalities via Cyclic Segmentation GANLeander Lauenburg, Zudi Lin, Ruihan Zhang et al. · harvard
Instance segmentation for unlabeled imaging modalities is a challenging but essential task as collecting expert annotation can be expensive and time-consuming. Existing works segment a new modality by either deploying a pre-trained model optimized on diverse training data or conducting domain translation and image segmentation as two independent steps. In this work, we propose a novel Cyclic Segmentation Generative Adversarial Network (CySGAN) that conducts image translation and instance segmentation jointly using a unified framework. Besides the CycleGAN losses for image translation and supervised losses for the annotated source domain, we introduce additional self-supervised and segmentation-based adversarial objectives to improve the model performance by leveraging unlabeled target domain images. We benchmark our approach on the task of 3D neuronal nuclei segmentation with annotated electron microscopy (EM) images and unlabeled expansion microscopy (ExM) data. Our CySGAN outperforms both pretrained generalist models and the baselines that sequentially conduct image translation and segmentation. Masked Image Training for Generalizable Deep Image DenoisingHaoyu Chen, Jinjin Gu, Yihao Liu et al.
When capturing and storing images, devices inevitably introduce noise. Reducing this noise is a critical task called image denoising. Deep learning has become the de facto method for image denoising, especially with the emergence of Transformer-based models that have achieved notable state-of-the-art results on various image tasks. However, deep learning-based methods often suffer from a lack of generalization ability. For example, deep models trained on Gaussian noise may perform poorly when tested on other noise distributions. To address this issue, we present a novel approach to enhance the generalization performance of denoising networks, known as masked training. Our method involves masking random pixels of the input image and reconstructing the missing information during training. We also mask out the features in the self-attention layers to avoid the impact of training-testing inconsistency. Our approach exhibits better generalization ability than other deep learning models and is directly applicable to real-world scenarios. Additionally, our interpretability analysis demonstrates the superiority of our method.

RiGS: Rigid-aware 4D Gaussian Splatting from a Single Monocular VideoChenyu Wu, Wanhua Li, Zhu-Tian Chen et al.
Reconstructing dynamic 3D scenes from monocular videos is a fundamental yet highly challenging task, as real-world motions often involve both long-term smooth transformations and short-term complex deformations. Existing methods either struggle to maintain temporal consistency or fail to capture high-frequency dynamics due to limited motion modeling capacity. In this work, we present Rigid-aware 4D Gaussian Splatting (RiGS), which simultaneously captures motions across multiple temporal scales. Specifically, RiGS introduces three types of Gaussian primitives: static, rigid, and transient, which represent static backgrounds, long-term low-frequency motions, and short-term high-frequency dynamics, respectively. An object-wise dynamic mask is proposed to aggregate long-range spatiotemporal motion information and guide the decomposition of static and dynamic regions. To jointly model motion across scales, rigid Gaussians are allowed to transition into transient Gaussians based on their temporal duration, and both are optimized under scene flow guidance, providing dense 3D motion supervision. Extensive experiments demonstrate that RiGS achieves state-of-the-art performance on novel view synthesis benchmarks. Sound Source Localization is All about Cross-Modal AlignmentArda Senocak, Hyeonggon Ryu, Junsik Kim et al.
Humans can easily perceive the direction of sound sources in a visual scene, termed sound source localization. Recent studies on learning-based sound source localization have mainly explored the problem from a localization perspective. However, prior arts and existing benchmarks do not account for a more important aspect of the problem, cross-modal semantic understanding, which is essential for genuine sound source localization. Cross-modal semantic understanding is important in understanding semantically mismatched audio-visual events, e.g., silent objects, or off-screen sounds. To account for this, we propose a cross-modal alignment task as a joint task with sound source localization to better learn the interaction between audio and visual modalities. Thereby, we achieve high localization performance with strong cross-modal semantic understanding. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in both sound source localization and cross-modal retrieval. Our work suggests that jointly tackling both tasks is necessary to conquer genuine sound source localization.

Lite2Relight: 3D-aware Single Image Portrait RelightingPramod Rao, Gereon Fox, Abhimitra Meka et al.
Achieving photorealistic 3D view synthesis and relighting of human portraits is pivotal for advancing AR/VR applications. Existing methodologies in portrait relighting demonstrate substantial limitations in terms of generalization and 3D consistency, coupled with inaccuracies in physically realistic lighting and identity preservation. Furthermore, personalization from a single view is difficult to achieve and often requires multiview images during the testing phase or involves slow optimization processes. This paper introduces Lite2Relight, a novel technique that can predict 3D consistent head poses of portraits while performing physically plausible light editing at interactive speed. Our method uniquely extends the generative capabilities and efficient volumetric representation of EG3D, leveraging a lightstage dataset to implicitly disentangle face reflectance and perform relighting under target HDRI environment maps. By utilizing a pre-trained geometry-aware encoder and a feature alignment module, we map input images into a relightable 3D space, enhancing them with a strong face geometry and reflectance prior. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations, we show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of efficacy, photorealism, and practical application. This includes producing 3D-consistent results of the full head, including hair, eyes, and expressions. Lite2Relight paves the way for large-scale adoption of photorealistic portrait editing in various domains, offering a robust, interactive solution to a previously constrained problem. When Visuals Aren't the Problem: Evaluating Vision-Language Models on Misleading Data VisualizationsHarsh Nishant Lalai, Raj Sanjay Shah, Hanspeter Pfister et al.
Visualizations help communicate data insights, but deceptive data representations can distort their interpretation and propagate misinformation. While recent Vision Language Models (VLMs) perform well on many chart understanding tasks, their ability to detect misleading visualizations, especially when deception arises from subtle reasoning errors in captions, remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluate VLMs on misleading visualization-caption pairs grounded in a fine-grained taxonomy of reasoning errors (e.g., Cherry-picking, Causal inference) and visualization design errors (e.g., Truncated axis, Dual axis, inappropriate encodings). To this end, we develop a benchmark that combines real-world visualization with human-authored, curated misleading captions designed to elicit specific reasoning and visualization error types, enabling controlled analysis across error categories and modalities of misleadingness. Evaluating many commercial and open-source VLMs, we find that models detect visual design errors substantially more reliably than reasoning-based misinformation, and frequently misclassify non-misleading visualizations as deceptive. Overall, our work fills a gap between coarse detection of misleading content and the attribution of the specific reasoning or visualization errors that give rise to it.

The XPRESS Challenge: Xray Projectomic Reconstruction -- Extracting Segmentation with SkeletonsTri Nguyen, Mukul Narwani, Mark Larson et al.
The wiring and connectivity of neurons form a structural basis for the function of the nervous system. Advances in volume electron microscopy (EM) and image segmentation have enabled mapping of circuit diagrams (connectomics) within local regions of the mouse brain. However, applying volume EM over the whole brain is not currently feasible due to technological challenges. As a result, comprehensive maps of long-range connections between brain regions are lacking. Recently, we demonstrated that X-ray holographic nanotomography (XNH) can provide high-resolution images of brain tissue at a much larger scale than EM. In particular, XNH is wellsuited to resolve large, myelinated axon tracts (white matter) that make up the bulk of long-range connections (projections) and are critical for inter-region communication. Thus, XNH provides an imaging solution for brain-wide projectomics. However, because XNH data is typically collected at lower resolutions and larger fields-of-view than EM, accurate segmentation of XNH images remains an important challenge that we present here. In this task, we provide volumetric XNH images of cortical white matter axons from the mouse brain along with ground truth annotations for axon trajectories. Manual voxel-wise annotation of ground truth is a time-consuming bottleneck for training segmentation networks. On the other hand, skeleton-based ground truth is much faster to annotate, and sufficient to determine connectivity. Therefore, we encourage participants to develop methods to leverage skeleton-based training. To this end, we provide two types of ground-truth annotations: a small volume of voxel-wise annotations and a larger volume with skeleton-based annotations. Entries will be evaluated on how accurately the submitted segmentations agree with the ground-truth skeleton annotations.

An Out-of-Domain Synapse Detection Challenge for Microwasp Brain ConnectomesJingpeng Wu, Yicong Li, Nishika Gupta et al.
The size of image stacks in connectomics studies now reaches the terabyte and often petabyte scales with a great diversity of appearance across brain regions and samples. However, manual annotation of neural structures, e.g., synapses, is time-consuming, which leads to limited training data often smaller than 0.001\% of the test data in size. Domain adaptation and generalization approaches were proposed to address similar issues for natural images, which were less evaluated on connectomics data due to a lack of out-of-domain benchmarks.

Structure-Preserving Instance Segmentation via Skeleton-Aware Distance TransformZudi Lin, Donglai Wei, Aarush Gupta et al.
Objects with complex structures pose significant challenges to existing instance segmentation methods that rely on boundary or affinity maps, which are vulnerable to small errors around contacting pixels that cause noticeable connectivity change. While the distance transform (DT) makes instance interiors and boundaries more distinguishable, it tends to overlook the intra-object connectivity for instances with varying width and result in over-segmentation. To address these challenges, we propose a skeleton-aware distance transform (SDT) that combines the merits of object skeleton in preserving connectivity and DT in modeling geometric arrangement to represent instances with arbitrary structures. Comprehensive experiments on histopathology image segmentation demonstrate that SDT achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Raiven: LLM-Based Visualization Authoring via Domain-Specific Language MediationAlexandra Irger, Ella Hugie, Minghao Guo et al.
Visualization is central to scientific discovery, yet authoring tools remain split between information and scientific visualization, and expertise in one rarely transfers to the other. Large Language Model (LLM) based systems promise to bridge this gap through natural language, but current approaches generate code non-deterministically, with no guarantee of correctness and no protection against silent data fabrication. We present Raiven, a conversational system that mediates visualization authoring through a formally defined domain-specific language. RaivenDSL unifies scientific and information visualization in a single representation spanning 2D, 3D, and tabular data. The LLM produces a compact RaivenDSL specification under schema-guided constraints, and a deterministic compiler translates it to executable D3 or VTK.js code. Because the LLM operates only on dataset metadata, outputs are deterministic, specifications are verifiable before execution, and data fabrication is impossible by construction. In a 100-task benchmark, Raiven achieves 100% compilation, is up to six times faster and six times cheaper than state-of-the-art LLMs, while improving interaction quality, correctness, and data faithfulness. An expert user study shows that Raiven significantly reduces debugging effort and makes it easier to produce correct visualizations.

Aligning Sight and Sound: Advanced Sound Source Localization Through Audio-Visual AlignmentArda Senocak, Hyeonggon Ryu, Junsik Kim et al.
Recent studies on learning-based sound source localization have mainly focused on the localization performance perspective. However, prior work and existing benchmarks overlook a crucial aspect: cross-modal interaction, which is essential for interactive sound source localization. Cross-modal interaction is vital for understanding semantically matched or mismatched audio-visual events, such as silent objects or off-screen sounds. In this paper, we first comprehensively examine the cross-modal interaction of existing methods, benchmarks, evaluation metrics, and cross-modal understanding tasks. Then, we identify the limitations of previous studies and make several contributions to overcome the limitations. First, we introduce a new synthetic benchmark for interactive sound source localization. Second, we introduce new evaluation metrics to rigorously assess sound source localization methods, focusing on accurately evaluating both localization performance and cross-modal interaction ability. Third, we propose a learning framework with a cross-modal alignment strategy to enhance cross-modal interaction. Lastly, we evaluate both interactive sound source localization and auxiliary cross-modal retrieval tasks together to thoroughly assess cross-modal interaction capabilities and benchmark competing methods. Our new benchmarks and evaluation metrics reveal previously overlooked issues in sound source localization studies. Our proposed novel method, with enhanced cross-modal alignment, shows superior sound source localization performance. This work provides the most comprehensive analysis of sound source localization to date, with extensive validation of competing methods on both existing and new benchmarks using new and standard evaluation metrics.

Towards 1000-fold Electron Microscopy Image Compression for Connectomics via VQ-VAE with Transformer PriorFuming Yang, Yicong Li, Hanspeter Pfister et al.
Petascale electron microscopy (EM) datasets push storage, transfer, and downstream analysis toward their current limits. We present a vector-quantized variational autoencoder-based (VQ-VAE) compression framework for EM that spans 16x to 1024x and enables pay-as-you-decode usage: top-only decoding for extreme compression, with an optional Transformer prior that predicts bottom tokens (without changing the compression ratio) to restore texture via feature-wise linear modulation (FiLM) and concatenation; we further introduce an ROI-driven workflow that performs selective high-resolution reconstruction from 1024x-compressed latents only where needed.

Reward models (RMs) are inherently non-neutral value functions designed and trained to encode specific objectives, such as human preferences or text-image alignment. RMs have become crucial components of text-to-image (T2I) generation systems where they are used at various stages for dataset filtering, as evaluation metrics, as a supervisory signal during optimization of parameters, and for post-generation safety and quality filtering of T2I outputs. While specific problems with the integration of RMs into the T2I pipeline have been studied (e.g. reward hacking or mode collapse), their robustness and fairness as scoring functions remains largely unknown. We conduct a large scale audit of RM robustness with respect to demographic biases during T2I model training and generation. We provide quantitative and qualitative evidence that while originally developed as quality measures, RMs encode demographic biases, which cause reward-guided optimization to disproportionately sexualize female image subjects reinforce gender/racial stereotypes, and collapse demographic diversity. These findings highlight shortcomings in current reward models, challenge their reliability as quality metrics, and underscore the need for improved data collection and training procedures to enable more robust scoring.

S$^3$-TTA: Scale-Style Selection for Test-Time Augmentation in Biomedical Image SegmentationKangxian Xie, Siyu Huang, Sebastian Andres Cajas Ordonez et al.
Deep-learning models have been successful in biomedical image segmentation. To generalize for real-world deployment, test-time augmentation (TTA) methods are often used to transform the test image into different versions that are hopefully closer to the training domain. Unfortunately, due to the vast diversity of instance scale and image styles, many augmented test images produce undesirable results, thus lowering the overall performance. This work proposes a new TTA framework, S$^3$-TTA, which selects the suitable image scale and style for each test image based on a transformation consistency metric. In addition, S$^3$-TTA constructs an end-to-end augmentation-segmentation joint-training pipeline to ensure a task-oriented augmentation. On public benchmarks for cell and lung segmentation, S$^3$-TTA demonstrates improvements over the prior art by 3.4% and 1.3%, respectively, by simply augmenting the input data in testing phase.

MoRA: LoRA Guided Multi-Modal Disease Diagnosis with Missing ModalityZhiyi Shi, Junsik Kim, Wanhua Li et al.
Multi-modal pre-trained models efficiently extract and fuse features from different modalities with low memory requirements for fine-tuning. Despite this efficiency, their application in disease diagnosis is under-explored. A significant challenge is the frequent occurrence of missing modalities, which impairs performance. Additionally, fine-tuning the entire pre-trained model demands substantial computational resources. To address these issues, we introduce Modality-aware Low-Rank Adaptation (MoRA), a computationally efficient method. MoRA projects each input to a low intrinsic dimension but uses different modality-aware up-projections for modality-specific adaptation in cases of missing modalities. Practically, MoRA integrates into the first block of the model, significantly improving performance when a modality is missing. It requires minimal computational resources, with less than 1.6% of the trainable parameters needed compared to training the entire model. Experimental results show that MoRA outperforms existing techniques in disease diagnosis, demonstrating superior performance, robustness, and training efficiency.

LangFlash: Feed-forward 3D Language Gaussian Splatting from Sparse Unposed ImagesYilong Liu, Wanhua Li, Chen Zhu-Tian et al.
We present LangFlash, a feed-forward framework for 3D Language Gaussian Splatting that reconstructs 3D scenes parameterized by Gaussian primitives enriched with language-aligned semantic features from sparse unposed multi-view images. Unlike optimization-based 3D methods, LangFlash directly predicts the geometry and semantics in a single forward pass, enabling low-latency 3D reconstruction and language-consistent scene understanding. To support large-scale training, we enriched the RealEstate10k dataset with coherent and dense semantic information for 3D semantic supervision. Furthermore, we propose a sparse semantic encoding scheme that combines a global semantic dictionary with locally varying per-primitive weights, preserving high-level linguistic information, while reducing representation complexity. Experimental results show that LangFlash achieves superior novel view synthesis and semantic consistency compared with previous methods. This study establishes a new paradigm for pose-free, language-grounded 3D scene reconstruction, advancing generalizable 3D vision and multimodal scene understanding. $R^2$-Tuning: Efficient Image-to-Video Transfer Learning for Video Temporal GroundingYe Liu, Jixuan He, Wanhua Li et al.
Video temporal grounding (VTG) is a fine-grained video understanding problem that aims to ground relevant clips in untrimmed videos given natural language queries. Most existing VTG models are built upon frame-wise final-layer CLIP features, aided by additional temporal backbones (e.g., SlowFast) with sophisticated temporal reasoning mechanisms. In this work, we claim that CLIP itself already shows great potential for fine-grained spatial-temporal modeling, as each layer offers distinct yet useful information under different granularity levels. Motivated by this, we propose Reversed Recurrent Tuning ($R^2$-Tuning), a parameter- and memory-efficient transfer learning framework for video temporal grounding. Our method learns a lightweight $R^2$ Block containing only 1.5% of the total parameters to perform progressive spatial-temporal modeling. Starting from the last layer of CLIP, $R^2$ Block recurrently aggregates spatial features from earlier layers, then refines temporal correlation conditioning on the given query, resulting in a coarse-to-fine scheme. $R^2$-Tuning achieves state-of-the-art performance across three VTG tasks (i.e., moment retrieval, highlight detection, and video summarization) on six public benchmarks (i.e., QVHighlights, Charades-STA, Ego4D-NLQ, TACoS, YouTube Highlights, and TVSum) even without the additional backbone, demonstrating the significance and effectiveness of the proposed scheme. SD-LoRA: Scalable Decoupled Low-Rank Adaptation for Class Incremental LearningYichen Wu, Hongming Piao, Long-Kai Huang et al.
Continual Learning (CL) with foundation models has recently emerged as a promising paradigm to exploit abundant knowledge acquired during pre-training for tackling sequential tasks. However, existing prompt-based and Low-Rank Adaptation-based (LoRA-based) methods often require expanding a prompt/LoRA pool or retaining samples of previous tasks, which poses significant scalability challenges as the number of tasks grows. To address these limitations, we propose Scalable Decoupled LoRA (SD-LoRA) for class incremental learning, which continually separates the learning of the magnitude and direction of LoRA components without rehearsal. Our empirical and theoretical analysis reveals that SD-LoRA tends to follow a low-loss trajectory and converges to an overlapping low-loss region for all learned tasks, resulting in an excellent stability-plasticity trade-off. Building upon these insights, we introduce two variants of SD-LoRA with further improved parameter efficiency. All parameters of SD-LoRAs can be end-to-end optimized for CL objectives. Meanwhile, they support efficient inference by allowing direct evaluation with the finally trained model, obviating the need for component selection. We introduce GeCo, a geometry-grounded metric for jointly detecting geometric deformation and occlusion-inconsistency artifacts in static scenes. By fusing residual motion and depth priors, GeCo produces interpretable, dense consistency maps that reveal these artifacts. We use GeCo to systematically benchmark recent video generation models, uncovering common failure modes, and further employ it as a training-free guidance loss to reduce deformation artifacts during video generation.

Task-Specific Directions: Definition, Exploration, and Utilization in Parameter Efficient Fine-TuningChongjie Si, Zhiyi Shi, Shifan Zhang et al.
Large language models demonstrate impressive performance on downstream tasks, yet they require extensive resource consumption when fully fine-tuning all parameters. To mitigate this, Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) strategies, such as LoRA, have been developed. In this paper, we delve into the concept of task-specific directions (TSDs), which are critical for transitioning large models from pretrained states to task-specific enhancements in PEFT. We propose a framework to clearly define these directions and explore their properties and practical utilization challenges. We then introduce a novel approach, LoRA-Dash, which aims to maximize the impact of TSDs during the fine-tuning process, thereby enhancing model performance on targeted tasks. Additionally, based on our exploration of TSD, we focus on an important issue in PEFT: the initialization of LoRA. While some works have pointed out the significance of initialization for LoRA's performance and proposed various strategies, these methods are often empirical and not task-specific. To address this issue, we propose LoRA-Init. Starting from TSD, we identify the directions that require the most adjustment during fine-tuning for downstream tasks. By initializing the matrices in LoRA with these directions, LoRA-Init significantly enhances LoRA's performance. Moreover, we can combine LoRA-Dash and LoRA-Init to create the final version of LoRA based on TSDs, which we refer to as LoRA-TSD. Extensive experiments have conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of these methods, and in-depth analyses further reveal the underlying mechanisms behind their success.

SocialGPT: Prompting LLMs for Social Relation Reasoning via Greedy Segment OptimizationWanhua Li, Zibin Meng, Jiawei Zhou et al.
Social relation reasoning aims to identify relation categories such as friends, spouses, and colleagues from images. While current methods adopt the paradigm of training a dedicated network end-to-end using labeled image data, they are limited in terms of generalizability and interpretability. To address these issues, we first present a simple yet well-crafted framework named {\name}, which combines the perception capability of Vision Foundation Models (VFMs) and the reasoning capability of Large Language Models (LLMs) within a modular framework, providing a strong baseline for social relation recognition. Specifically, we instruct VFMs to translate image content into a textual social story, and then utilize LLMs for text-based reasoning. {\name} introduces systematic design principles to adapt VFMs and LLMs separately and bridge their gaps. Without additional model training, it achieves competitive zero-shot results on two databases while offering interpretable answers, as LLMs can generate language-based explanations for the decisions. The manual prompt design process for LLMs at the reasoning phase is tedious and an automated prompt optimization method is desired. As we essentially convert a visual classification task into a generative task of LLMs, automatic prompt optimization encounters a unique long prompt optimization issue. To address this issue, we further propose the Greedy Segment Prompt Optimization (GSPO), which performs a greedy search by utilizing gradient information at the segment level. Can Machines Imitate Humans? Integrative Turing-like tests for Language and Vision Demonstrate a Narrowing GapMengmi Zhang, Elisa Pavarino, Xiao Liu et al.
As AI becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, ascertaining whether an agent is human is critical. We systematically benchmark AI's ability to imitate humans in three language tasks (image captioning, word association, conversation) and three vision tasks (color estimation, object detection, attention prediction), collecting data from 636 humans and 37 AI agents. Next, we conducted 72,191 Turing-like tests with 1,916 human judges and 10 AI judges. Current AIs are approaching the ability to convincingly impersonate humans and deceive human judges in both language and vision. Even simple AI judges outperformed humans in distinguishing AI from human responses. Imitation ability showed minimal correlation with conventional AI performance metrics, suggesting that passing as human is an important independent evaluation criterion. The large-scale Turing datasets and metrics introduced here offer valuable benchmarks for assessing human-likeness in AI and highlight the importance of rigorous, quantitative imitation tests for AI development.

Affordance-Aware Object Insertion via Mask-Aware Dual DiffusionJixuan He, Wanhua Li, Ye Liu et al.
As a common image editing operation, image composition involves integrating foreground objects into background scenes. In this paper, we expand the application of the concept of Affordance from human-centered image composition tasks to a more general object-scene composition framework, addressing the complex interplay between foreground objects and background scenes. Following the principle of Affordance, we define the affordance-aware object insertion task, which aims to seamlessly insert any object into any scene with various position prompts. To address the limited data issue and incorporate this task, we constructed the SAM-FB dataset, which contains over 3 million examples across more than 3,000 object categories. Furthermore, we propose the Mask-Aware Dual Diffusion (MADD) model, which utilizes a dual-stream architecture to simultaneously denoise the RGB image and the insertion mask. By explicitly modeling the insertion mask in the diffusion process, MADD effectively facilitates the notion of affordance. Extensive experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and exhibits strong generalization performance on in-the-wild images. RoboTAG: End-to-end Robot Configuration Estimation via Topological Alignment GraphYifan Liu, Fangneng Zhan, Wanhua Li et al.
Estimating robot pose from a monocular RGB image is a challenge in robotics and computer vision. Existing methods typically build networks on top of 2D visual backbones and depend heavily on labeled data for training, which is often scarce in real-world scenarios, causing a sim-to-real gap. Moreover, these approaches reduce the 3D-based problem to 2D domain, neglecting the 3D priors. To address these, we propose Robot Topological Alignment Graph (RoboTAG), which incorporates a 3D branch to inject 3D priors while enabling co-evolution of the 2D and 3D representations, alleviating the reliance on labels. Specifically, the RoboTAG consists of a 3D branch and a 2D branch, where nodes represent the states of the camera and robot system, and edges capture the dependencies between these variables or denote alignments between them. Closed loops are then defined in the graph, on which a consistency supervision across branches can be applied. This design allows us to utilize in-the-wild images as training data without annotations. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is effective across robot types, highlighting its potential to alleviate the data bottleneck in robotics.

ViSTAR: Virtual Skill Training with Augmented Reality with 3D Avatars and LLM coaching agentChunggi Lee, Hayato Saiki, Tica Lin et al.
We present ViSTAR, a Virtual Skill Training system in AR that supports self-guided basketball skill practice, with feedback on balance, posture, and timing. From a formative study with basketball players and coaches, the system addresses three challenges: understanding skills, identifying errors, and correcting mistakes. ViSTAR follows the Behavioral Skills Training (BST) framework-instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. It provides feedback through visual overlays, rhythm and timing cues, and an AI-powered coaching agent using 3D motion reconstruction. We generate verbal feedback by analyzing spatio-temporal joint data and mapping features to natural-language coaching cues via a Large Language Model (LLM). A key novelty is this feedback generation: motion features become concise coaching insights. In two studies (N=16), participants generally preferred our AI-generated feedback to coach feedback and reported that ViSTAR helped them notice posture and balance issues and refine movements beyond self-observation.

Abstract 3D Perception for Spatial Intelligence in Vision-Language ModelsYifan Liu, Fangneng Zhan, Kaichen Zhou et al.
Vision-language models (VLMs) struggle with 3D-related tasks such as spatial cognition and physical understanding, which are crucial for real-world applications like robotics and embodied agents. We attribute this to a modality gap between the 3D tasks and the 2D training of VLM, which led to inefficient retrieval of 3D information from 2D input. To bridge this gap, we introduce SandboxVLM, a simple yet effective framework that leverages abstract bounding boxes to encode geometric structure and physical kinematics for VLM. Specifically, we design a 3D Sandbox reconstruction and perception pipeline comprising four stages: generating multi-view priors with abstract control, proxy elevation, multi-view voting and clustering, and 3D-aware reasoning. Evaluated in zero-shot settings across multiple benchmarks and VLM backbones, our approach consistently improves spatial intelligence, achieving an 8.3\% gain on SAT Real compared with baseline methods for instance. These results demonstrate that equipping VLMs with a 3D abstraction substantially enhances their 3D reasoning ability without additional training, suggesting new possibilities for general-purpose embodied intelligence.

Humans live in a 3D world and commonly use natural language to interact with a 3D scene. Modeling a 3D language field to support open-ended language queries in 3D has gained increasing attention recently. This paper introduces LangSplat, which constructs a 3D language field that enables precise and efficient open-vocabulary querying within 3D spaces. Unlike existing methods that ground CLIP language embeddings in a NeRF model, LangSplat advances the field by utilizing a collection of 3D Gaussians, each encoding language features distilled from CLIP, to represent the language field. By employing a tile-based splatting technique for rendering language features, we circumvent the costly rendering process inherent in NeRF. Instead of directly learning CLIP embeddings, LangSplat first trains a scene-wise language autoencoder and then learns language features on the scene-specific latent space, thereby alleviating substantial memory demands imposed by explicit modeling. Existing methods struggle with imprecise and vague 3D language fields, which fail to discern clear boundaries between objects. We delve into this issue and propose to learn hierarchical semantics using SAM, thereby eliminating the need for extensively querying the language field across various scales and the regularization of DINO features. Extensive experimental results show that LangSplat significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method LERF by a large margin. Notably, LangSplat is extremely efficient, achieving a 199 $\times$ speedup compared to LERF at the resolution of 1440 $\times$ 1080. Tree of Attributes Prompt Learning for Vision-Language ModelsTong Ding, Wanhua Li, Zhongqi Miao et al.
Prompt learning has proven effective in adapting vision language models for downstream tasks. However, existing methods usually append learnable prompt tokens solely with the category names to obtain textual features, which fails to fully leverage the rich context indicated in the category name. To address this issue, we propose the Tree of Attributes Prompt learning (TAP), which first instructs LLMs to generate a tree of attributes with a "concept - attribute - description" structure for each category, and then learn the hierarchy with vision and text prompt tokens. Unlike existing methods that merely augment category names with a set of unstructured descriptions, our approach essentially distills structured knowledge graphs associated with class names from LLMs. Furthermore, our approach introduces text and vision prompts designed to explicitly learn the corresponding visual attributes, effectively serving as domain experts. Additionally, the general and diverse descriptions generated based on the class names may be wrong or absent in the specific given images. To address this misalignment, we further introduce a vision-conditional pooling module to extract instance-specific text features. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the zero-shot base-to-novel generalization, cross-dataset transfer, as well as few-shot classification across 11 diverse datasets. DualEdit: Dual Editing for Knowledge Updating in Vision-Language ModelsZhiyi Shi, Binjie Wang, Chongjie Si et al.
Model editing aims to efficiently update a pre-trained model's knowledge without the need for time-consuming full retraining. While existing pioneering editing methods achieve promising results, they primarily focus on editing single-modal language models (LLMs). However, for vision-language models (VLMs), which involve multiple modalities, the role and impact of each modality on editing performance remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we explore the impact of textual and visual modalities on model editing and find that: (1) textual and visual representations reach peak sensitivity at different layers, reflecting their varying importance; and (2) editing both modalities can efficiently update knowledge, but this comes at the cost of compromising the model's original capabilities. Based on our findings, we propose DualEdit, an editor that modifies both textual and visual modalities at their respective key layers. Additionally, we introduce a gating module within the more sensitive textual modality, allowing DualEdit to efficiently update new knowledge while preserving the model's original information. We evaluate DualEdit across multiple VLM backbones and benchmark datasets, demonstrating its superiority over state-of-the-art VLM editing baselines as well as adapted LLM editing methods on different evaluation metrics. AREA3D: Active Reconstruction Agent with Unified Feed-Forward 3D Perception and Vision-Language GuidanceTianling Xu, Shengzhe Gan, Leslie Gu et al.
Active 3D reconstruction enables an agent to autonomously select viewpoints to efficiently obtain accurate and complete scene geometry, rather than passively reconstructing scenes from pre-collected images. However, existing active reconstruction methods often rely on hand-crafted geometric heuristics, which can lead to redundant observations without substantially improving reconstruction quality. To address this limitation, we propose AREA3D, an active reconstruction agent that leverages feed-forward 3D reconstruction models and vision-language guidance. Our framework decouples view-uncertainty modeling from the underlying feed-forward reconstructor, enabling precise uncertainty estimation without expensive online optimization. In addition, an integrated vision-language model provides high-level semantic guidance, encouraging informative and diverse viewpoints beyond purely geometric cues. Extensive experiments on both scene-level and object-level benchmarks demonstrate that AREA3D achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy, particularly in the sparse-view regime. Revisiting RCAN: Improved Training for Image Super-ResolutionZudi Lin, Prateek Garg, Atmadeep Banerjee et al.
Image super-resolution (SR) is a fast-moving field with novel architectures attracting the spotlight. However, most SR models were optimized with dated training strategies. In this work, we revisit the popular RCAN model and examine the effect of different training options in SR. Surprisingly (or perhaps as expected), we show that RCAN can outperform or match nearly all the CNN-based SR architectures published after RCAN on standard benchmarks with a proper training strategy and minimal architecture change. Besides, although RCAN is a very large SR architecture with more than four hundred convolutional layers, we draw a notable conclusion that underfitting is still the main problem restricting the model capability instead of overfitting. We observe supportive evidence that increasing training iterations clearly improves the model performance while applying regularization techniques generally degrades the predictions. PyTorch Connectomics: A Scalable and Flexible Segmentation Framework for EM ConnectomicsZudi Lin, Donglai Wei, Jeff Lichtman et al.
We present PyTorch Connectomics (PyTC), an open-source deep-learning framework for the semantic and instance segmentation of volumetric microscopy images, built upon PyTorch. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PyTC in the field of connectomics, which aims to segment and reconstruct neurons, synapses, and other organelles like mitochondria at nanometer resolution for understanding neuronal communication, metabolism, and development in animal brains. PyTC is a scalable and flexible toolbox that tackles datasets at different scales and supports multi-task and semi-supervised learning to better exploit expensive expert annotations and the vast amount of unlabeled data during training. Those functionalities can be easily realized in PyTC by changing the configuration options without coding and adapted to other 2D and 3D segmentation tasks for different tissues and imaging modalities. Quantitatively, our framework achieves the best performance in the CREMI challenge for synaptic cleft segmentation (outperforms existing best result by relatively 6.1$\%$) and competitive performance on mitochondria and neuronal nuclei segmentation. Object Propagation via Inter-Frame Attentions for Temporally Stable Video Instance SegmentationAnirudh S Chakravarthy, Won-Dong Jang, Zudi Lin et al.
Video instance segmentation aims to detect, segment, and track objects in a video. Current approaches extend image-level segmentation algorithms to the temporal domain. However, this results in temporally inconsistent masks. In this work, we identify the mask quality due to temporal stability as a performance bottleneck. Motivated by this, we propose a video instance segmentation method that alleviates the problem due to missing detections. Since this cannot be solved simply using spatial information, we leverage temporal context using inter-frame attentions. This allows our network to refocus on missing objects using box predictions from the neighbouring frame, thereby overcoming missing detections. Our method significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art algorithms using the Mask R-CNN backbone, by achieving 36.0% mAP on the YouTube-VIS benchmark. MedMNIST v2 -- A large-scale lightweight benchmark for 2D and 3D biomedical image classificationJiancheng Yang, Rui Shi, Donglai Wei et al.
We introduce MedMNIST v2, a large-scale MNIST-like dataset collection of standardized biomedical images, including 12 datasets for 2D and 6 datasets for 3D. All images are pre-processed into a small size of 28x28 (2D) or 28x28x28 (3D) with the corresponding classification labels so that no background knowledge is required for users. Covering primary data modalities in biomedical images, MedMNIST v2 is designed to perform classification on lightweight 2D and 3D images with various dataset scales (from 100 to 100,000) and diverse tasks (binary/multi-class, ordinal regression, and multi-label). The resulting dataset, consisting of 708,069 2D images and 10,214 3D images in total, could support numerous research / educational purposes in biomedical image analysis, computer vision, and machine learning. We benchmark several baseline methods on MedMNIST v2, including 2D / 3D neural networks and open-source / commercial AutoML tools. The data and code are publicly available at https://medmnist.com/.

Asymmetric 3D Context Fusion for Universal Lesion DetectionJiancheng Yang, Yi He, Kaiming Kuang et al.
Modeling 3D context is essential for high-performance 3D medical image analysis. Although 2D networks benefit from large-scale 2D supervised pretraining, it is weak in capturing 3D context. 3D networks are strong in 3D context yet lack supervised pretraining. As an emerging technique, \emph{3D context fusion operator}, which enables conversion from 2D pretrained networks, leverages the advantages of both and has achieved great success. Existing 3D context fusion operators are designed to be spatially symmetric, i.e., performing identical operations on each 2D slice like convolutions. However, these operators are not truly equivariant to translation, especially when only a few 3D slices are used as inputs. In this paper, we propose a novel asymmetric 3D context fusion operator (A3D), which uses different weights to fuse 3D context from different 2D slices. Notably, A3D is NOT translation-equivariant while it significantly outperforms existing symmetric context fusion operators without introducing large computational overhead. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method by extensive experiments on DeepLesion benchmark, a large-scale public dataset for universal lesion detection from computed tomography (CT). The proposed A3D consistently outperforms symmetric context fusion operators by considerable margins, and establishes a new \emph{state of the art} on DeepLesion. RibSeg Dataset and Strong Point Cloud Baselines for Rib Segmentation from CT ScansJiancheng Yang, Shixuan Gu, Donglai Wei et al.
Manual rib inspections in computed tomography (CT) scans are clinically critical but labor-intensive, as 24 ribs are typically elongated and oblique in 3D volumes. Automatic rib segmentation methods can speed up the process through rib measurement and visualization. However, prior arts mostly use in-house labeled datasets that are publicly unavailable and work on dense 3D volumes that are computationally inefficient. To address these issues, we develop a labeled rib segmentation benchmark, named \emph{RibSeg}, including 490 CT scans (11,719 individual ribs) from a public dataset. For ground truth generation, we used existing morphology-based algorithms and manually refined its results. Then, considering the sparsity of ribs in 3D volumes, we thresholded and sampled sparse voxels from the input and designed a point cloud-based baseline method for rib segmentation. The proposed method achieves state-of-the-art segmentation performance (Dice~$\approx95\%$) with significant efficiency ($10\sim40\times$ faster than prior arts). In-distribution adversarial attacks on object recognition models using gradient-free searchSpandan Madan, Tomotake Sasaki, Hanspeter Pfister et al.
Neural networks are susceptible to small perturbations in the form of 2D rotations and shifts, image crops, and even changes in object colors. Past works attribute these errors to dataset bias, claiming that models fail on these perturbed samples as they do not belong to the training data distribution. Here, we challenge this claim and present evidence of the widespread existence of perturbed images within the training data distribution, which networks fail to classify. We train models on data sampled from parametric distributions, then search inside this data distribution to find such in-distribution adversarial examples. This is done using our gradient-free evolution strategies (ES) based approach which we call CMA-Search. Despite training with a large-scale (0.5 million images), unbiased dataset of camera and light variations, CMA-Search can find a failure inside the data distribution in over 71% cases by perturbing the camera position. With lighting changes, CMA-Search finds misclassifications in 42% cases. These findings also extend to natural images from ImageNet and Co3D datasets. This phenomenon of in-distribution images presents a highly worrisome problem for artificial intelligence -- they bypass the need for a malicious agent to add engineered noise to induce an adversarial attack.
