Revisiting Event Argument Extraction: Can EAE Models Learn Better When Being Aware of Event Co-occurrences?

Event co-occurrences have been proved effective for event extraction (EE) in previous studies, but have not been considered for event argument extraction (EAE) recently. In this paper, we try to fill this gap between EE research and EAE research, by highlighting the question that ``Can EAE models learn better when being aware of event co-occurrences?''. To answer this question, we reformulate EAE as a problem of table generation and extend a SOTA prompt-based EAE model into a non-autoregressive generation framework, called TabEAE, which is able to extract the arguments of multiple events in parallel. Under this framework, we experiment with 3 different training-inference schemes on 4 datasets (ACE05, RAMS, WikiEvents and MLEE) and discover that via training the model to extract all events in parallel, it can better distinguish the semantic boundary of each event and its ability to extract single event gets substantially improved. Experimental results show that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance on the 4 datasets. Our code is avilable at https://github.com/Stardust-hyx/TabEAE.

Agentic Tool Use in Large Language Models

Large language models are increasingly being deployed as autonomous agents yet their real world effectiveness depends on reliable tools for information retrieval, computation and external action. Existing studies remain fragmented across tasks, tool types, and training settings, lacking a unified view of how tool-use methods differ and evolve. This paper organizes the literature into three paradigms: prompting as plug-and-play, supervised tool learning and reward-driven tool policy learning, analyzes their methods, strengths and failure modes, reviews the evaluation landscape and highlights key challenges, aiming to address this fragmentation and provide a more structured evolutionary view of agentic tool use.

ParaBank: Monolingual Bitext Generation and Sentential Paraphrasing via Lexically-constrained Neural Machine Translation

We present ParaBank, a large-scale English paraphrase dataset that surpasses prior work in both quantity and quality. Following the approach of ParaNMT, we train a Czech-English neural machine translation (NMT) system to generate novel paraphrases of English reference sentences. By adding lexical constraints to the NMT decoding procedure, however, we are able to produce multiple high-quality sentential paraphrases per source sentence, yielding an English paraphrase resource with more than 4 billion generated tokens and exhibiting greater lexical diversity. Using human judgments, we also demonstrate that ParaBank's paraphrases improve over ParaNMT on both semantic similarity and fluency. Finally, we use ParaBank to train a monolingual NMT model with the same support for lexically-constrained decoding for sentence rewriting tasks.

Collecting Diverse Natural Language Inference Problems for Sentence Representation Evaluation

We present a large-scale collection of diverse natural language inference (NLI) datasets that help provide insight into how well a sentence representation captures distinct types of reasoning. The collection results from recasting 13 existing datasets from 7 semantic phenomena into a common NLI structure, resulting in over half a million labeled context-hypothesis pairs in total. We refer to our collection as the DNC: Diverse Natural Language Inference Collection. The DNC is available online at https://www.decomp.net, and will grow over time as additional resources are recast and added from novel sources.
