Information Retrieval Meets Large Language Models: A Strategic Report from Chinese IR Community

Qingyao Ai, Ting Bai, Zhao Cao et al. · pku, tsinghua

The research field of Information Retrieval (IR) has evolved significantly, expanding beyond traditional search to meet diverse user information needs. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in text understanding, generation, and knowledge inference, opening up exciting avenues for IR research. LLMs not only facilitate generative retrieval but also offer improved solutions for user understanding, model evaluation, and user-system interactions. More importantly, the synergistic relationship among IR models, LLMs, and humans forms a new technical paradigm that is more powerful for information seeking. IR models provide real-time and relevant information, LLMs contribute internal knowledge, and humans play a central role of demanders and evaluators to the reliability of information services. Nevertheless, significant challenges exist, including computational costs, credibility concerns, domain-specific limitations, and ethical considerations. To thoroughly discuss the transformative impact of LLMs on IR research, the Chinese IR community conducted a strategic workshop in April 2023, yielding valuable insights. This paper provides a summary of the workshop's outcomes, including the rethinking of IR's core values, the mutual enhancement of LLMs and IR, the proposal of a novel IR technical paradigm, and open challenges.

StrokeGAN+: Few-Shot Semi-Supervised Chinese Font Generation with Stroke Encoding

Jinshan Zeng, Yefei Wang, Qi Chen et al.

The generation of Chinese fonts has a wide range of applications. The currently predominated methods are mainly based on deep generative models, especially the generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, existing GAN-based models usually suffer from the well-known mode collapse problem. When mode collapse happens, the kind of GAN-based models will be failure to yield the correct fonts. To address this issue, we introduce a one-bit stroke encoding and a few-shot semi-supervised scheme (i.e., using a few paired data as semi-supervised information) to explore the local and global structure information of Chinese characters respectively, motivated by the intuition that strokes and characters directly embody certain local and global modes of Chinese characters. Based on these ideas, this paper proposes an effective model called \textit{StrokeGAN+}, which incorporates the stroke encoding and the few-shot semi-supervised scheme into the CycleGAN model. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated by amounts of experiments. Experimental results show that the mode collapse issue can be effectively alleviated by the introduced one-bit stroke encoding and few-shot semi-supervised training scheme, and that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art models in fourteen font generation tasks in terms of four important evaluation metrics and the quality of generated characters. Besides CycleGAN, we also show that the proposed idea can be adapted to other existing models to improve their performance. The effectiveness of the proposed model for the zero-shot traditional Chinese font generation is also evaluated in this paper.

Industrial Anomaly Detection and Localization Using Weakly-Supervised Residual Transformers

Hanxi Li, Jingqi Wu, Deyin Liu et al.

Recent advancements in industrial anomaly detection (AD) have demonstrated that incorporating a small number of anomalous samples during training can significantly enhance accuracy. However, this improvement often comes at the cost of extensive annotation efforts, which are impractical for many real-world applications. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework, Weak}ly-supervised RESidual Transformer (WeakREST), designed to achieve high anomaly detection accuracy while minimizing the reliance on manual annotations. First, we reformulate the pixel-wise anomaly localization task into a block-wise classification problem. Second, we introduce a residual-based feature representation called Positional Fast Anomaly Residuals (PosFAR) which captures anomalous patterns more effectively. To leverage this feature, we adapt the Swin Transformer for enhanced anomaly detection and localization. Additionally, we propose a weak annotation approach, utilizing bounding boxes and image tags to define anomalous regions. This approach establishes a semi-supervised learning context that reduces the dependency on precise pixel-level labels. To further improve the learning process, we develop a novel ResMixMatch algorithm, capable of handling the interplay between weak labels and residual-based representations. On the benchmark dataset MVTec-AD, our method achieves an Average Precision (AP) of $83.0\%$, surpassing the previous best result of $82.7\%$ in the unsupervised setting. In the supervised AD setting, WeakREST attains an AP of $87.6\%$, outperforming the previous best of $86.0\%$. Notably, even when using weaker annotations such as bounding boxes, WeakREST exceeds the performance of leading methods relying on pixel-wise supervision, achieving an AP of $87.1\%$ compared to the prior best of $86.0\%$ on MVTec-AD.

Multi-dimensional Visual Prompt Enhanced Image Restoration via Mamba-Transformer Aggregation

Aiwen Jiang, Hourong Chen, Zhiwen Chen et al.

Recent efforts on image restoration have focused on developing "all-in-one" models that can handle different degradation types and levels within single model. However, most of mainstream Transformer-based ones confronted with dilemma between model capabilities and computation burdens, since self-attention mechanism quadratically increase in computational complexity with respect to image size, and has inadequacies in capturing long-range dependencies. Most of Mamba-related ones solely scanned feature map in spatial dimension for global modeling, failing to fully utilize information in channel dimension. To address aforementioned problems, this paper has proposed to fully utilize complementary advantages from Mamba and Transformer without sacrificing computation efficiency. Specifically, the selective scanning mechanism of Mamba is employed to focus on spatial modeling, enabling capture long-range spatial dependencies under linear complexity. The self-attention mechanism of Transformer is applied to focus on channel modeling, avoiding high computation burdens that are in quadratic growth with image's spatial dimensions. Moreover, to enrich informative prompts for effective image restoration, multi-dimensional prompt learning modules are proposed to learn prompt-flows from multi-scale encoder/decoder layers, benefiting for revealing underlying characteristic of various degradations from both spatial and channel perspectives, therefore, enhancing the capabilities of "all-in-one" model to solve various restoration tasks. Extensive experiment results on several image restoration benchmark tasks such as image denoising, dehazing, and deraining, have demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve new state-of-the-art performance, compared with many popular mainstream methods. Related source codes and pre-trained parameters will be public on github https://github.com/12138-chr/MTAIR.

Convolutional Neural Network with Convolutional Block Attention Module for Finger Vein Recognition

Zhongxia Zhang, Mingwen Wang

Convolutional neural networks have become a popular research in the field of finger vein recognition because of their powerful image feature representation. However, most researchers focus on improving the performance of the network by increasing the CNN depth and width, which often requires high computational effort. Moreover, we can notice that not only the importance of pixels in different channels is different, but also the importance of pixels in different positions of the same channel is different. To reduce the computational effort and to take into account the different importance of pixels, we propose a lightweight convolutional neural network with a convolutional block attention module (CBAM) for finger vein recognition, which can achieve a more accurate capture of visual structures through an attention mechanism. First, image sequences are fed into a lightweight convolutional neural network we designed to improve visual features. Afterwards, it learns to assign feature weights in an adaptive manner with the help of a convolutional block attention module. The experiments are carried out on two publicly available databases and the results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a stable, highly accurate, and robust performance in multimodal finger recognition.

CodeGen-Test: An Automatic Code Generation Model Integrating Program Test Information

Maosheng Zhong, Gen Liu, Hongwei Li et al.

Automatic code generation is to generate the program code according to the given natural language description. The current mainstream approach uses neural networks to encode natural language descriptions, and output abstract syntax trees (AST) at the decoder, then convert the AST into program code. While the generated code largely conforms to specific syntax rules, two problems are still ignored. One is missing program testing, an essential step in the process of complete code implementation; the other is only focusing on the syntax compliance of the generated code, while ignoring the more important program functional requirements. The paper proposes a CodeGen-Test model, which adds program testing steps and incorporates program testing information to iteratively generate code that meets the functional requirements of the program, thereby improving the quality of code generation. At the same time, the paper proposes a new evaluation metric, test accuracy (Test-Acc), which represents the proportion of passing program test in generated code. Different from the previous evaluation metric, which only evaluates the quality of code generation from the perspective of character similarity, the Test-Acc can evaluate the quality of code generation from the Program functions. Moreover, the paper evaluates the CodeGen-test model on a python data set "hearthstone legend". The experimental results show the proposed method can effectively improve the quality of generated code. Compared with the existing optimal model, CodeGen-Test model improves the Bleu value by 0.2%, Rouge-L value by 0.3% and Test-Acc by 6%.

Finger Vein Recognition by Generating Code

Zhongxia Zhang, Mingwen Wang

Finger vein recognition has drawn increasing attention as one of the most popular and promising biometrics due to its high distinguishes ability, security and non-invasive procedure. The main idea of traditional schemes is to directly extract features from finger vein images or patterns and then compare features to find the best match. However, the features extracted from images contain much redundant data, while the features extracted from patterns are greatly influenced by image segmentation methods. To tack these problems, this paper proposes a new finger vein recognition by generating code. The proposed method does not require an image segmentation algorithm, is simple to calculate and has a small amount of data. Firstly, the finger vein images were divided into blocks to calculate the mean value. Then the centrosymmetric coding is performed by using the generated eigenmatrix. The obtained codewords are concatenated as the feature codewords of the image. The similarity between vein codes is measured by the ratio of minimum Hamming distance to codeword length. Extensive experiments on two public finger vein databases verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicate that our method outperforms the state-of-theart methods and has competitive potential in performing the matching task.

StrokeGAN: Reducing Mode Collapse in Chinese Font Generation via Stroke Encoding

Jinshan Zeng, Qi Chen, Yunxin Liu et al.

The generation of stylish Chinese fonts is an important problem involved in many applications. Most of existing generation methods are based on the deep generative models, particularly, the generative adversarial networks (GAN) based models. However, these deep generative models may suffer from the mode collapse issue, which significantly degrades the diversity and quality of generated results. In this paper, we introduce a one-bit stroke encoding to capture the key mode information of Chinese characters and then incorporate it into CycleGAN, a popular deep generative model for Chinese font generation. As a result we propose an efficient method called StrokeGAN, mainly motivated by the observation that the stroke encoding contains amount of mode information of Chinese characters. In order to reconstruct the one-bit stroke encoding of the associated generated characters, we introduce a stroke-encoding reconstruction loss imposed on the discriminator. Equipped with such one-bit stroke encoding and stroke-encoding reconstruction loss, the mode collapse issue of CycleGAN can be significantly alleviated, with an improved preservation of strokes and diversity of generated characters. The effectiveness of StrokeGAN is demonstrated by a series of generation tasks over nine datasets with different fonts. The numerical results demonstrate that StrokeGAN generally outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of content and recognition accuracies, as well as certain stroke error, and also generates more realistic characters.

Progressive Feature Fusion Network for Realistic Image Dehazing

Kangfu Mei, Aiwen Jiang, Juncheng Li et al.

Single image dehazing is a challenging ill-posed restoration problem. Various prior-based and learning-based methods have been proposed. Most of them follow a classic atmospheric scattering model which is an elegant simplified physical model based on the assumption of single-scattering and homogeneous atmospheric medium. The formulation of haze in realistic environment is more complicated. In this paper, we propose to take its essential mechanism as "black box", and focus on learning an input-adaptive trainable end-to-end dehazing model. An U-Net like encoder-decoder deep network via progressive feature fusions has been proposed to directly learn highly nonlinear transformation function from observed hazy image to haze-free ground-truth. The proposed network is evaluated on two public image dehazing benchmarks. The experiments demonstrate that it can achieve superior performance when compared with popular state-of-the-art methods. With efficient GPU memory usage, it can satisfactorily recover ultra high definition hazed image up to 4K resolution, which is unaffordable by many deep learning based dehazing algorithms.

An Effective Single-Image Super-Resolution Model Using Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks

Kangfu Mei, Aiwen Jiang, Juncheng Li et al.

Recent works on single-image super-resolution are concentrated on improving performance through enhancing spatial encoding between convolutional layers. In this paper, we focus on modeling the correlations between channels of convolutional features. We present an effective deep residual network based on squeeze-and-excitation blocks (SEBlock) to reconstruct high-resolution (HR) image from low-resolution (LR) image. SEBlock is used to adaptively recalibrate channel-wise feature mappings. Further, short connections between each SEBlock are used to remedy information loss. Extensive experiments show that our model can achieve the state-of-the-art performance and get finer texture details.

Sentence-level dialects identification in the greater China region

Fan Xu, Mingwen Wang, Maoxi Li

Identifying the different varieties of the same language is more challenging than unrelated languages identification. In this paper, we propose an approach to discriminate language varieties or dialects of Mandarin Chinese for the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Malaysia and Singapore, a.k.a., the Greater China Region (GCR). When applied to the dialects identification of the GCR, we find that the commonly used character-level or word-level uni-gram feature is not very efficient since there exist several specific problems such as the ambiguity and context-dependent characteristic of words in the dialects of the GCR. To overcome these challenges, we use not only the general features like character-level n-gram, but also many new word-level features, including PMI-based and word alignment-based features. A series of evaluation results on both the news and open-domain dataset from Wikipedia show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Learning Discriminative Representations for Semantic Cross Media Retrieval

Aiwen Jiang, Hanxi Li, Yi Li et al.

Heterogeneous gap among different modalities emerges as one of the critical issues in modern AI problems. Unlike traditional uni-modal cases, where raw features are extracted and directly measured, the heterogeneous nature of cross modal tasks requires the intrinsic semantic representation to be compared in a unified framework. This paper studies the learning of different representations that can be retrieved across different modality contents. A novel approach for mining cross-modal representations is proposed by incorporating explicit linear semantic projecting in Hilbert space. The insight is that the discriminative structures of different modality data can be linearly represented in appropriate high dimension Hilbert spaces, where linear operations can be used to approximate nonlinear decisions in the original spaces. As a result, an efficient linear semantic down mapping is jointly learned for multimodal data, leading to a common space where they can be compared. The mechanism of "feature up-lifting and down-projecting" works seamlessly as a whole, which accomplishes crossmodal retrieval tasks very well. The proposed method, named as shared discriminative semantic representation learning (\textbf{SDSRL}), is tested on two public multimodal dataset for both within- and inter- modal retrieval. The experiments demonstrate that it outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in most scenarios.
