Scientific and Technological Information Oriented Semantics-adversarial and Media-adversarial Cross-media Retrieval

Ang Li, Junping Du, Feifei Kou et al.

Cross-media retrieval of scientific and technological information is one of the important tasks in the cross-media study. Cross-media scientific and technological information retrieval obtain target information from massive multi-source and heterogeneous scientific and technological resources, which helps to design applications that meet users' needs, including scientific and technological information recommendation, personalized scientific and technological information retrieval, etc. The core of cross-media retrieval is to learn a common subspace, so that data from different media can be directly compared with each other after being mapped into this subspace. In subspace learning, existing methods often focus on modeling the discrimination of intra-media data and the invariance of inter-media data after mapping; however, they ignore the semantic consistency of inter-media data before and after mapping and media discrimination of intra-semantics data, which limit the result of cross-media retrieval. In light of this, we propose a scientific and technological information oriented Semantics-adversarial and Media-adversarial Cross-media Retrieval method (SMCR) to find an effective common subspace. Specifically, SMCR minimizes the loss of inter-media semantic consistency in addition to modeling intra-media semantic discrimination, to preserve semantic similarity before and after mapping. Furthermore, SMCR constructs a basic feature mapping network and a refined feature mapping network to jointly minimize the media discriminative loss within semantics, so as to enhance the feature mapping network's ability to confuse the media discriminant network. Experimental results on two datasets demonstrate that the proposed SMCR outperforms state-of-the-art methods in cross-media retrieval.

Life Regression based Patch Slimming for Vision Transformers

Jiawei Chen, Lin Chen, Jiang Yang et al.

Vision transformers have achieved remarkable success in computer vision tasks by using multi-head self-attention modules to capture long-range dependencies within images. However, the high inference computation cost poses a new challenge. Several methods have been proposed to address this problem, mainly by slimming patches. In the inference stage, these methods classify patches into two classes, one to keep and the other to discard in multiple layers. This approach results in additional computation at every layer where patches are discarded, which hinders inference acceleration. In this study, we tackle the patch slimming problem from a different perspective by proposing a life regression module that determines the lifespan of each image patch in one go. During inference, the patch is discarded once the current layer index exceeds its life. Our proposed method avoids additional computation and parameters in multiple layers to enhance inference speed while maintaining competitive performance. Additionally, our approach requires fewer training epochs than other patch slimming methods.

Sinc Kolmogorov-Arnold Network and Its Applications on Physics-informed Neural Networks

Tianchi Yu, Jingwei Qiu, Jiang Yang et al.

In this paper, we propose to use Sinc interpolation in the context of Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks, neural networks with learnable activation functions, which recently gained attention as alternatives to multilayer perceptron. Many different function representations have already been tried, but we show that Sinc interpolation proposes a viable alternative, since it is known in numerical analysis to represent well both smooth functions and functions with singularities. This is important not only for function approximation but also for the solutions of partial differential equations with physics-informed neural networks. Through a series of experiments, we show that SincKANs provide better results in almost all of the examples we have considered.

Research on Cross-media Science and Technology Information Data Retrieval

Yang Jiang, Zhe Xue, Ang Li

Since the era of big data, the Internet has been flooded with all kinds of information. Browsing information through the Internet has become an integral part of people's daily life. Unlike the news data and social data in the Internet, the cross-media technology information data has different characteristics. This data has become an important basis for researchers and scholars to track the current hot spots and explore the future direction of technology development. As the volume of science and technology information data becomes richer, the traditional science and technology information retrieval system, which only supports unimodal data retrieval and uses outdated data keyword matching model, can no longer meet the daily retrieval needs of science and technology scholars. Therefore, in view of the above research background, it is of profound practical significance to study the cross-media science and technology information data retrieval system based on deep semantic features, which is in line with the development trend of domestic and international technologies.

Yang Jiang, Zhe Xue, Ang Li

In the era of big data, it is possible to carry out cooperative research on the research results of researchers through papers, patents and other data, so as to study the role of researchers, and produce results in the analysis of results. For the important problems found in the research and application of reality, this paper also proposes a research scholar interest mining algorithm based on load centrality (LCBIM), which can accurately solve the problem according to the researcher's research papers and patent data. Graphs of creative algorithms in various fields of the study aggregated ideas, generated topic graphs by aggregating neighborhoods, used the generated topic information to construct with similar or similar topic spaces, and utilize keywords to construct one or more topics. The regional structure of each topic can be used to closely calculate the weight of the centrality research model of the node, which can analyze the field in the complete coverage principle. The scientific research cooperation based on the load rate center proposed in this paper can effectively extract the interests of scientific research scholars from papers and corpus.

Random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine for unified visual processing

Shaocong Wang, Yizhao Gao, Yi Li et al.

Visual sensors, including 3D LiDAR, neuromorphic DVS sensors, and conventional frame cameras, are increasingly integrated into edge-side intelligent machines. Realizing intensive multi-sensory data analysis directly on edge intelligent machines is crucial for numerous emerging edge applications, such as augmented and virtual reality and unmanned aerial vehicles, which necessitates unified data representation, unprecedented hardware energy efficiency and rapid model training. However, multi-sensory data are intrinsically heterogeneous, causing significant complexity in the system development for edge-side intelligent machines. In addition, the performance of conventional digital hardware is limited by the physically separated processing and memory units, known as the von Neumann bottleneck, and the physical limit of transistor scaling, which contributes to the slowdown of Moore's law. These limitations are further intensified by the tedious training of models with ever-increasing sizes. We propose a novel hardware-software co-design, random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine (DEPLM), that offers efficient unified point set analysis. We show the system's versatility across various data modalities and two different learning tasks. Compared to a conventional digital hardware-based system, our co-design system achieves huge energy efficiency improvements and training cost reduction when compared to conventional systems. Our random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine may pave the way for energy-efficient and training-friendly edge AI across various data modalities and tasks.

Action Sensitivity Learning for Temporal Action Localization

Jiayi Shao, Xiaohan Wang, Ruijie Quan et al.

Temporal action localization (TAL), which involves recognizing and locating action instances, is a challenging task in video understanding. Most existing approaches directly predict action classes and regress offsets to boundaries, while overlooking the discrepant importance of each frame. In this paper, we propose an Action Sensitivity Learning framework (ASL) to tackle this task, which aims to assess the value of each frame and then leverage the generated action sensitivity to recalibrate the training procedure. We first introduce a lightweight Action Sensitivity Evaluator to learn the action sensitivity at the class level and instance level, respectively. The outputs of the two branches are combined to reweight the gradient of the two sub-tasks. Moreover, based on the action sensitivity of each frame, we design an Action Sensitive Contrastive Loss to enhance features, where the action-aware frames are sampled as positive pairs to push away the action-irrelevant frames. The extensive studies on various action localization benchmarks (i.e., MultiThumos, Charades, Ego4D-Moment Queries v1.0, Epic-Kitchens 100, Thumos14 and ActivityNet1.3) show that ASL surpasses the state-of-the-art in terms of average-mAP under multiple types of scenarios, e.g., single-labeled, densely-labeled and egocentric.

Multi-Granularity Network with Modal Attention for Dense Affective Understanding

Baoming Yan, Lin Wang, Ke Gao et al.

Video affective understanding, which aims to predict the evoked expressions by the video content, is desired for video creation and recommendation. In the recent EEV challenge, a dense affective understanding task is proposed and requires frame-level affective prediction. In this paper, we propose a multi-granularity network with modal attention (MGN-MA), which employs multi-granularity features for better description of the target frame. Specifically, the multi-granularity features could be divided into frame-level, clips-level and video-level features, which corresponds to visual-salient content, semantic-context and video theme information. Then the modal attention fusion module is designed to fuse the multi-granularity features and emphasize more affection-relevant modals. Finally, the fused feature is fed into a Mixtures Of Experts (MOE) classifier to predict the expressions. Further employing model-ensemble post-processing, the proposed method achieves the correlation score of 0.02292 in the EEV challenge.

Augmented Bi-path Network for Few-shot Learning

Baoming Yan, Chen Zhou, Bo Zhao et al.

Few-shot Learning (FSL) which aims to learn from few labeled training data is becoming a popular research topic, due to the expensive labeling cost in many real-world applications. One kind of successful FSL method learns to compare the testing (query) image and training (support) image by simply concatenating the features of two images and feeding it into the neural network. However, with few labeled data in each class, the neural network has difficulty in learning or comparing the local features of two images. Such simple image-level comparison may cause serious mis-classification. To solve this problem, we propose Augmented Bi-path Network (ABNet) for learning to compare both global and local features on multi-scales. Specifically, the salient patches are extracted and embedded as the local features for every image. Then, the model learns to augment the features for better robustness. Finally, the model learns to compare global and local features separately, i.e., in two paths, before merging the similarities. Extensive experiments show that the proposed ABNet outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Both quantitative and visual ablation studies are provided to verify that the proposed modules lead to more precise comparison results.

Neural Architecture Refinement: A Practical Way for Avoiding Overfitting in NAS

Yang Jiang, Cong Zhao, Zeyang Dou et al.

Neural architecture search (NAS) is proposed to automate the architecture design process and attracts overwhelming interest from both academia and industry. However, it is confronted with overfitting issue due to the high-dimensional search space composed by operator selection and skip connection of each layer. This paper explores the architecture overfitting issue in depth based on the reinforcement learning-based NAS framework. We show that the policy gradient method has deep correlations with the cross entropy minimization. Based on this correlation, we further demonstrate that, though the reward of NAS is sparse, the policy gradient method implicitly assign the reward to all operations and skip connections based on the sampling frequency. However, due to the inaccurate reward estimation, curse of dimensionality problem and the hierachical structure of neural networks, reward charateristics for operators and skip connections have intrinsic differences, the assigned rewards for the skip connections are extremely noisy and inaccurate. To alleviate this problem, we propose a neural architecture refinement approach that working with an initial state-of-the-art network structure and only refining its operators. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve fascinated results, including classification, face recognition etc.

An Effective Training Method For Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Yang Jiang, Zeyang Dou, Qun Hao et al.

In this paper, we propose the nonlinearity generation method to speed up and stabilize the training of deep convolutional neural networks. The proposed method modifies a family of activation functions as nonlinearity generators (NGs). NGs make the activation functions linear symmetric for their inputs to lower model capacity, and automatically introduce nonlinearity to enhance the capacity of the model during training. The proposed method can be considered an unusual form of regularization: the model parameters are obtained by training a relatively low-capacity model, that is relatively easy to optimize at the beginning, with only a few iterations, and these parameters are reused for the initialization of a higher-capacity model. We derive the upper and lower bounds of variance of the weight variation, and show that the initial symmetric structure of NGs helps stabilize training. We evaluate the proposed method on different frameworks of convolutional neural networks over two object recognition benchmark tasks (CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100). Experimental results showed that the proposed method allows us to (1) speed up the convergence of training, (2) allow for less careful weight initialization, (3) improve or at least maintain the performance of the model at negligible extra computational cost, and (4) easily train a very deep model.
