Adaptive incentive for cross-silo federated learning: A multi-agent reinforcement learning approach

Shijing Yuan, Hongze Liu, Hongtao Lv et al.

Cross-silo federated learning (FL) is a typical FL that enables organizations(e.g., financial or medical entities) to train global models on isolated data. Reasonable incentive is key to encouraging organizations to contribute data. However, existing works on incentivizing cross-silo FL lack consideration of the environmental dynamics (e.g., precision of the trained global model and data owned by uncertain clients during the training processes). Moreover, most of them assume that organizations share private information, which is unrealistic. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel adaptive mechanism for cross-silo FL, towards incentivizing organizations to contribute data to maximize their long-term payoffs in a real dynamic training environment. The mechanism is based on multi-agent reinforcement learning, which learns near-optimal data contribution strategy from the history of potential games without organizations' private information. Experiments demonstrate that our mechanism achieves adaptive incentive and effectively improves the long-term payoffs for organizations.

Depth Based Semantic Scene Completion with Position Importance Aware Loss

Yu Liu, Jie Li, Xia Yuan et al.

Semantic Scene Completion (SSC) refers to the task of inferring the 3D semantic segmentation of a scene while simultaneously completing the 3D shapes. We propose PALNet, a novel hybrid network for SSC based on single depth. PALNet utilizes a two-stream network to extract both 2D and 3D features from multi-stages using fine-grained depth information to efficiently captures the context, as well as the geometric cues of the scene. Current methods for SSC treat all parts of the scene equally causing unnecessary attention to the interior of objects. To address this problem, we propose Position Aware Loss(PA-Loss) which is position importance aware while training the network. Specifically, PA-Loss considers Local Geometric Anisotropy to determine the importance of different positions within the scene. It is beneficial for recovering key details like the boundaries of objects and the corners of the scene. Comprehensive experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its superior performance. Enhance Information Propagation for Graph Neural Network by Heterogeneous Aggregations

Dawei Leng, Jinjiang Guo, Lurong Pan et al.

Graph neural networks are emerging as continuation of deep learning success w.r.t. graph data. Tens of different graph neural network variants have been proposed, most following a neighborhood aggregation scheme, where the node features are updated via aggregating features of its neighboring nodes from layer to layer. Though related research surges, the power of GNNs are still not on-par-with their counterpart CNNs in computer vision and RNNs in natural language processing. We rethink this problem from the perspective of information propagation, and propose to enhance information propagation among GNN layers by combining heterogeneous aggregations. We argue that as richer information are propagated from shallow to deep layers, the discriminative capability of features formulated by GNN can benefit from it. As our first attempt in this direction, a new generic GNN layer formulation and upon this a new GNN variant referred as HAG-Net is proposed. We empirically validate the effectiveness of HAG-Net on a number of graph classification benchmarks, and elaborate all the design options and criterions along with.
