MFFN: Multi-view Feature Fusion Network for Camouflaged Object Detection

Dehua Zheng, Xiaochen Zheng, Laurence T. Yang et al.

Recent research about camouflaged object detection (COD) aims to segment highly concealed objects hidden in complex surroundings. The tiny, fuzzy camouflaged objects result in visually indistinguishable properties. However, current single-view COD detectors are sensitive to background distractors. Therefore, blurred boundaries and variable shapes of the camouflaged objects are challenging to be fully captured with a single-view detector. To overcome these obstacles, we propose a behavior-inspired framework, called Multi-view Feature Fusion Network (MFFN), which mimics the human behaviors of finding indistinct objects in images, i.e., observing from multiple angles, distances, perspectives. Specifically, the key idea behind it is to generate multiple ways of observation (multi-view) by data augmentation and apply them as inputs. MFFN captures critical boundary and semantic information by comparing and fusing extracted multi-view features. In addition, our MFFN exploits the dependence and interaction between views and channels. Specifically, our methods leverage the complementary information between different views through a two-stage attention module called Co-attention of Multi-view (CAMV). And we design a local-overall module called Channel Fusion Unit (CFU) to explore the channel-wise contextual clues of diverse feature maps in an iterative manner. The experiment results show that our method performs favorably against existing state-of-the-art methods via training with the same data. The code will be available at https://github.com/dwardzheng/MFFN_COD.

SCANet: Self-Paced Semi-Curricular Attention Network for Non-Homogeneous Image Dehazing

Yu Guo, Yuan Gao, Ryan Wen Liu et al.

The presence of non-homogeneous haze can cause scene blurring, color distortion, low contrast, and other degradations that obscure texture details. Existing homogeneous dehazing methods struggle to handle the non-uniform distribution of haze in a robust manner. The crucial challenge of non-homogeneous dehazing is to effectively extract the non-uniform distribution features and reconstruct the details of hazy areas with high quality. In this paper, we propose a novel self-paced semi-curricular attention network, called SCANet, for non-homogeneous image dehazing that focuses on enhancing haze-occluded regions. Our approach consists of an attention generator network and a scene reconstruction network. We use the luminance differences of images to restrict the attention map and introduce a self-paced semi-curricular learning strategy to reduce learning ambiguity in the early stages of training. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate that our SCANet outperforms many state-of-the-art methods. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/gy65896/SCANet.

Composable Text Controls in Latent Space with ODEs

Guangyi Liu, Zeyu Feng, Yuan Gao et al.

Real-world text applications often involve composing a wide range of text control operations, such as editing the text w.r.t. an attribute, manipulating keywords and structure, and generating new text of desired properties. Prior work typically learns/finetunes a language model (LM) to perform individual or specific subsets of operations. Recent research has studied combining operations in a plug-and-play manner, often with costly search or optimization in the complex sequence space. This paper proposes a new efficient approach for composable text operations in the compact latent space of text. The low-dimensionality and differentiability of the text latent vector allow us to develop an efficient sampler based on ordinary differential equations (ODEs) given arbitrary plug-in operators (e.g., attribute classifiers). By connecting pretrained LMs (e.g., GPT2) to the latent space through efficient adaption, we then decode the sampled vectors into desired text sequences. The flexible approach permits diverse control operators (sentiment, tense, formality, keywords, etc.) acquired using any relevant data from different domains. Experiments show that composing those operators within our approach manages to generate or edit high-quality text, substantially improving over previous methods in terms of generation quality and efficiency.

VesNet-RL: Simulation-based Reinforcement Learning for Real-World US Probe Navigation

Yuan Bi, Zhongliang Jiang, Yuan Gao et al.

Ultrasound (US) is one of the most common medical imaging modalities since it is radiation-free, low-cost, and real-time. In freehand US examinations, sonographers often navigate a US probe to visualize standard examination planes with rich diagnostic information. However, reproducibility and stability of the resulting images often suffer from intra- and inter-operator variation. Reinforcement learning (RL), as an interaction-based learning method, has demonstrated its effectiveness in visual navigating tasks; however, RL is limited in terms of generalization. To address this challenge, we propose a simulation-based RL framework for real-world navigation of US probes towards the standard longitudinal views of vessels. A UNet is used to provide binary masks from US images; thereby, the RL agent trained on simulated binary vessel images can be applied in real scenarios without further training. To accurately characterize actual states, a multi-modality state representation structure is introduced to facilitate the understanding of environments. Moreover, considering the characteristics of vessels, a novel standard view recognition approach based on the minimum bounding rectangle is proposed to terminate the searching process. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the trained policy is validated virtually on 3D volumes of a volunteer's in-vivo carotid artery, and physically on custom-designed gel phantoms using robotic US. The results demonstrate that proposed approach can effectively and accurately navigate the probe towards the longitudinal view of vessels.

Progressive Self-Distillation for Ground-to-Aerial Perception Knowledge Transfer

Junjie Hu, Chenyou Fan, Mete Ozay et al.

We study a practical yet hasn't been explored problem: how a drone can perceive in an environment from different flight heights. Unlike autonomous driving, where the perception is always conducted from a ground viewpoint, a flying drone may flexibly change its flight height due to specific tasks, requiring the capability for viewpoint invariant perception. Tackling the such problem with supervised learning will incur tremendous costs for data annotation of different flying heights. On the other hand, current semi-supervised learning methods are not effective under viewpoint differences. In this paper, we introduce the ground-to-aerial perception knowledge transfer and propose a progressive semi-supervised learning framework that enables drone perception using only labeled data of ground viewpoint and unlabeled data of flying viewpoints. Our framework has four core components: i) a dense viewpoint sampling strategy that splits the range of vertical flight height into a set of small pieces with evenly-distributed intervals, ii) nearest neighbor pseudo-labeling that infers labels of the nearest neighbor viewpoint with a model learned on the preceding viewpoint, iii) MixView that generates augmented images among different viewpoints to alleviate viewpoint differences, and iv) a progressive distillation strategy to gradually learn until reaching the maximum flying height. We collect a synthesized and a real-world dataset, and we perform extensive experimental analyses to show that our method yields 22.2% and 16.9% accuracy improvement for the synthesized dataset and the real world. Code and datasets are available on https://github.com/FreeformRobotics/Progressive-Self-Distillation-for-Ground-to-Aerial-Perception-Knowledge-Transfer.

DisAsymNet: Disentanglement of Asymmetrical Abnormality on Bilateral Mammograms using Self-adversarial Learning

Xin Wang, Tao Tan, Yuan Gao et al.

Asymmetry is a crucial characteristic of bilateral mammograms (Bi-MG) when abnormalities are developing. It is widely utilized by radiologists for diagnosis. The question of 'what the symmetrical Bi-MG would look like when the asymmetrical abnormalities have been removed ?' has not yet received strong attention in the development of algorithms on mammograms. Addressing this question could provide valuable insights into mammographic anatomy and aid in diagnostic interpretation. Hence, we propose a novel framework, DisAsymNet, which utilizes asymmetrical abnormality transformer guided self-adversarial learning for disentangling abnormalities and symmetric Bi-MG. At the same time, our proposed method is partially guided by randomly synthesized abnormalities. We conduct experiments on three public and one in-house dataset, and demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods in abnormality classification, segmentation, and localization tasks. Additionally, reconstructed normal mammograms can provide insights toward better interpretable visual cues for clinical diagnosis. The code will be accessible to the public.

Multilevel Hierarchical Network with Multiscale Sampling for Video Question Answering

Min Peng, Chongyang Wang, Yuan Gao et al.

Video question answering (VideoQA) is challenging given its multimodal combination of visual understanding and natural language processing. While most existing approaches ignore the visual appearance-motion information at different temporal scales, it is unknown how to incorporate the multilevel processing capacity of a deep learning model with such multiscale information. Targeting these issues, this paper proposes a novel Multilevel Hierarchical Network (MHN) with multiscale sampling for VideoQA. MHN comprises two modules, namely Recurrent Multimodal Interaction (RMI) and Parallel Visual Reasoning (PVR). With a multiscale sampling, RMI iterates the interaction of appearance-motion information at each scale and the question embeddings to build the multilevel question-guided visual representations. Thereon, with a shared transformer encoder, PVR infers the visual cues at each level in parallel to fit with answering different question types that may rely on the visual information at relevant levels. Through extensive experiments on three VideoQA datasets, we demonstrate improved performances than previous state-of-the-arts and justify the effectiveness of each part of our method.

Panoptic-PHNet: Towards Real-Time and High-Precision LiDAR Panoptic Segmentation via Clustering Pseudo Heatmap

Jinke Li, Xiao He, Yang Wen et al.

As a rising task, panoptic segmentation is faced with challenges in both semantic segmentation and instance segmentation. However, in terms of speed and accuracy, existing LiDAR methods in the field are still limited. In this paper, we propose a fast and high-performance LiDAR-based framework, referred to as Panoptic-PHNet, with three attractive aspects: 1) We introduce a clustering pseudo heatmap as a new paradigm, which, followed by a center grouping module, yields instance centers for efficient clustering without object-level learning tasks. 2) A knn-transformer module is proposed to model the interaction among foreground points for accurate offset regression. 3) For backbone design, we fuse the fine-grained voxel features and the 2D Bird's Eye View (BEV) features with different receptive fields to utilize both detailed and global information. Extensive experiments on both SemanticKITTI dataset and nuScenes dataset show that our Panoptic-PHNet surpasses state-of-the-art methods by remarkable margins with a real-time speed. We achieve the 1st place on the public leaderboard of SemanticKITTI and leading performance on the recently released leaderboard of nuScenes.

How to Design Translation Prompts for ChatGPT: An Empirical Study

Yuan Gao, Ruili Wang, Feng Hou

The recently released ChatGPT has demonstrated surprising abilities in natural language understanding and natural language generation. Machine translation relies heavily on the abilities of language understanding and generation. Thus, in this paper, we explore how to assist machine translation with ChatGPT. We adopt several translation prompts on a wide range of translations. Our experimental results show that ChatGPT with designed translation prompts can achieve comparable or better performance over commercial translation systems for high-resource language translations. We further evaluate the translation quality using multiple references, and ChatGPT achieves superior performance compared to commercial systems. We also conduct experiments on domain-specific translations, the final results show that ChatGPT is able to comprehend the provided domain keyword and adjust accordingly to output proper translations. At last, we perform few-shot prompts that show consistent improvement across different base prompts. Our work provides empirical evidence that ChatGPT still has great potential in translations.

Learning to Coordinate for a Worker-Station Multi-robot System in Planar Coverage Tasks

Jingtao Tang, Yuan Gao, Tin Lun Lam

For massive large-scale tasks, a multi-robot system (MRS) can effectively improve efficiency by utilizing each robot's different capabilities, mobility, and functionality. In this paper, we focus on the multi-robot coverage path planning (mCPP) problem in large-scale planar areas with random dynamic interferers in the environment, where the robots have limited resources. We introduce a worker-station MRS consisting of multiple workers with limited resources for actual work, and one station with enough resources for resource replenishment. We aim to solve the mCPP problem for the worker-station MRS by formulating it as a fully cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning problem. Then we propose an end-to-end decentralized online planning method, which simultaneously solves coverage planning for workers and rendezvous planning for station. Our method manages to reduce the influence of random dynamic interferers on planning, while the robots can avoid collisions with them. We conduct simulation and real robot experiments, and the comparison results show that our method has competitive performance in solving the mCPP problem for worker-station MRS in metric of task finish time.

SA-IQA: Redefining Image Quality Assessment for Spatial Aesthetics with Multi-Dimensional Rewards

Yuan Gao, Jin Song

In recent years, Image Quality Assessment (IQA) for AI-generated images (AIGI) has advanced rapidly; however, existing methods primarily target portraits and artistic images, lacking a systematic evaluation of interior scenes. We introduce Spatial Aesthetics, a paradigm that assesses the aesthetic quality of interior images along four dimensions: layout, harmony, lighting, and distortion. We construct SA-BENCH, the first benchmark for spatial aesthetics, comprising 18,000 images and 50,000 precise annotations. Employing SA-BENCH, we systematically evaluate current IQA methodologies and develop SA-IQA, through MLLM fine-tuning and a multidimensional fusion approach, as a comprehensive reward framework for assessing spatial aesthetics. We apply SA-IQA to two downstream tasks: (1) serving as a reward signal integrated with GRPO reinforcement learning to optimize the AIGC generation pipeline, and (2) Best-of-N selection to filter high-quality images and improve generation quality. Experiments indicate that SA-IQA significantly outperforms existing methods on SA-BENCH, setting a new standard for spatial aesthetics evaluation. Code and dataset will be open-sourced to advance research and applications in this domain.

SAVANT: Semantic Analysis with Vision-Augmented Anomaly deTection

Roberto Brusnicki, David Pop, Yuan Gao et al.

Autonomous driving systems remain critically vulnerable to the long-tail of rare, out-of-distribution scenarios with semantic anomalies. While Vision Language Models (VLMs) offer promising reasoning capabilities, naive prompting approaches yield unreliable performance and depend on expensive proprietary models, limiting practical deployment. We introduce SAVANT (Semantic Analysis with Vision-Augmented Anomaly deTection), a structured reasoning framework that achieves high accuracy and recall in detecting anomalous driving scenarios from input images through layered scene analysis and a two-phase pipeline: structured scene description extraction followed by multi-modal evaluation. Our approach transforms VLM reasoning from ad-hoc prompting to systematic analysis across four semantic layers: Street, Infrastructure, Movable Objects, and Environment. SAVANT achieves 89.6% recall and 88.0% accuracy on real-world driving scenarios, significantly outperforming unstructured baselines. More importantly, we demonstrate that our structured framework enables a fine-tuned 7B parameter open-source model (Qwen2.5VL) to achieve 90.8% recall and 93.8% accuracy - surpassing all models evaluated while enabling local deployment at near-zero cost. By automatically labeling over 9,640 real-world images with high accuracy, SAVANT addresses the critical data scarcity problem in anomaly detection and provides a practical path toward reliable, accessible semantic monitoring for autonomous systems.

Orthogonal Jacobian Regularization for Unsupervised Disentanglement in Image Generation

Yuxiang Wei, Yupeng Shi, Xiao Liu et al.

Unsupervised disentanglement learning is a crucial issue for understanding and exploiting deep generative models. Recently, SeFa tries to find latent disentangled directions by performing SVD on the first projection of a pre-trained GAN. However, it is only applied to the first layer and works in a post-processing way. Hessian Penalty minimizes the off-diagonal entries of the output's Hessian matrix to facilitate disentanglement, and can be applied to multi-layers.However, it constrains each entry of output independently, making it not sufficient in disentangling the latent directions (e.g., shape, size, rotation, etc.) of spatially correlated variations. In this paper, we propose a simple Orthogonal Jacobian Regularization (OroJaR) to encourage deep generative model to learn disentangled representations. It simply encourages the variation of output caused by perturbations on different latent dimensions to be orthogonal, and the Jacobian with respect to the input is calculated to represent this variation. We show that our OroJaR also encourages the output's Hessian matrix to be diagonal in an indirect manner. In contrast to the Hessian Penalty, our OroJaR constrains the output in a holistic way, making it very effective in disentangling latent dimensions corresponding to spatially correlated variations. Quantitative and qualitative experimental results show that our method is effective in disentangled and controllable image generation, and performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/csyxwei/OroJaR

Reach Measurement, Optimization and Frequency Capping In Targeted Online Advertising Under k-Anonymity

Yuan Gao, Mu Qiao

The growth in the use of online advertising to foster brand awareness over recent years is largely attributable to the ubiquity of social media. One pivotal technology contributing to the success of online brand advertising is frequency capping, a mechanism that enables marketers to control the number of times an ad is shown to a specific user. However, the very foundation of this technology is being scrutinized as the industry gravitates towards advertising solutions that prioritize user privacy. This paper delves into the issue of reach measurement and optimization within the context of $k$-anonymity, a privacy-preserving model gaining traction across major online advertising platforms. We outline how to report reach within this new privacy landscape and demonstrate how probabilistic discounting, a probabilistic adaptation of traditional frequency capping, can be employed to optimize campaign performance. Experiments are performed to assess the trade-off between user privacy and the efficacy of online brand advertising. Notably, we discern a significant dip in performance as long as privacy is introduced, yet this comes with a limited additional cost for advertising platforms to offer their users more privacy.

FEANet: Feature-Enhanced Attention Network for RGB-Thermal Real-time Semantic Segmentation

Fuqin Deng, Hua Feng, Mingjian Liang et al.

The RGB-Thermal (RGB-T) information for semantic segmentation has been extensively explored in recent years. However, most existing RGB-T semantic segmentation usually compromises spatial resolution to achieve real-time inference speed, which leads to poor performance. To better extract detail spatial information, we propose a two-stage Feature-Enhanced Attention Network (FEANet) for the RGB-T semantic segmentation task. Specifically, we introduce a Feature-Enhanced Attention Module (FEAM) to excavate and enhance multi-level features from both the channel and spatial views. Benefited from the proposed FEAM module, our FEANet can preserve the spatial information and shift more attention to high-resolution features from the fused RGB-T images. Extensive experiments on the urban scene dataset demonstrate that our FEANet outperforms other state-of-the-art (SOTA) RGB-T methods in terms of objective metrics and subjective visual comparison (+2.6% in global mAcc and +0.8% in global mIoU). For the 480 x 640 RGB-T test images, our FEANet can run with a real-time speed on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti card.

Learn2Agree: Fitting with Multiple Annotators without Objective Ground Truth

Chongyang Wang, Yuan Gao, Chenyou Fan et al.

The annotation of domain experts is important for some medical applications where the objective ground truth is ambiguous to define, e.g., the rehabilitation for some chronic diseases, and the prescreening of some musculoskeletal abnormalities without further medical examinations. However, improper uses of the annotations may hinder developing reliable models. On one hand, forcing the use of a single ground truth generated from multiple annotations is less informative for the modeling. On the other hand, feeding the model with all the annotations without proper regularization is noisy given existing disagreements. For such issues, we propose a novel Learning to Agreement (Learn2Agree) framework to tackle the challenge of learning from multiple annotators without objective ground truth. The framework has two streams, with one stream fitting with the multiple annotators and the other stream learning agreement information between annotators. In particular, the agreement learning stream produces regularization information to the classifier stream, tuning its decision to be better in line with the agreement between annotators. The proposed method can be easily added to existing backbones, with experiments on two medical datasets showed better agreement levels with annotators.

Principled Ultrasound Data Augmentation for Classification of Standard Planes

Lok Hin Lee, Yuan Gao, J. Alison Noble

Deep learning models with large learning capacities often overfit to medical imaging datasets. This is because training sets are often relatively small due to the significant time and financial costs incurred in medical data acquisition and labelling. Data augmentation is therefore often used to expand the availability of training data and to increase generalization. However, augmentation strategies are often chosen on an ad-hoc basis without justification. In this paper, we present an augmentation policy search method with the goal of improving model classification performance. We include in the augmentation policy search additional transformations that are often used in medical image analysis and evaluate their performance. In addition, we extend the augmentation policy search to include non-linear mixed-example data augmentation strategies. Using these learned policies, we show that principled data augmentation for medical image model training can lead to significant improvements in ultrasound standard plane detection, with an an average F1-score improvement of 7.0% overall over naive data augmentation strategies in ultrasound fetal standard plane classification. We find that the learned representations of ultrasound images are better clustered and defined with optimized data augmentation.
