CMB: A Comprehensive Medical Benchmark in ChineseXidong Wang, Guiming Hardy Chen, Dingjie Song et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) provide a possibility to make a great breakthrough in medicine. The establishment of a standardized medical benchmark becomes a fundamental cornerstone to measure progression. However, medical environments in different regions have their local characteristics, e.g., the ubiquity and significance of traditional Chinese medicine within China. Therefore, merely translating English-based medical evaluation may result in \textit{contextual incongruities} to a local region. To solve the issue, we propose a localized medical benchmark called CMB, a Comprehensive Medical Benchmark in Chinese, designed and rooted entirely within the native Chinese linguistic and cultural framework. While traditional Chinese medicine is integral to this evaluation, it does not constitute its entirety. Using this benchmark, we have evaluated several prominent large-scale LLMs, including ChatGPT, GPT-4, dedicated Chinese LLMs, and LLMs specialized in the medical domain. We hope this benchmark provide first-hand experience in existing LLMs for medicine and also facilitate the widespread adoption and enhancement of medical LLMs within China. Our data and code are publicly available at https://github.com/FreedomIntelligence/CMB.
Multi-to-Single Knowledge Distillation for Point Cloud Semantic SegmentationShoumeng Qiu, Feng Jiang, Haiqiang Zhang et al.
3D point cloud semantic segmentation is one of the fundamental tasks for environmental understanding. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, the performance of classes with few examples or few points is still far from satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-to-single knowledge distillation framework for the 3D point cloud semantic segmentation task to boost the performance of those hard classes. Instead of fusing all the points of multi-scans directly, only the instances that belong to the previously defined hard classes are fused. To effectively and sufficiently distill valuable knowledge from multi-scans, we leverage a multilevel distillation framework, i.e., feature representation distillation, logit distillation, and affinity distillation. We further develop a novel instance-aware affinity distillation algorithm for capturing high-level structural knowledge to enhance the distillation efficacy for hard classes. Finally, we conduct experiments on the SemanticKITTI dataset, and the results on both the validation and test sets demonstrate that our method yields substantial improvements compared with the baseline method. Knowledge Distillation from 3D to Bird's-Eye-View for LiDAR Semantic SegmentationFeng Jiang, Heng Gao, Shoumeng Qiu et al.
LiDAR point cloud segmentation is one of the most fundamental tasks for autonomous driving scene understanding. However, it is difficult for existing models to achieve both high inference speed and accuracy simultaneously. For example, voxel-based methods perform well in accuracy, while Bird's-Eye-View (BEV)-based methods can achieve real-time inference. To overcome this issue, we develop an effective 3D-to-BEV knowledge distillation method that transfers rich knowledge from 3D voxel-based models to BEV-based models. Our framework mainly consists of two modules: the voxel-to-pillar distillation module and the label-weight distillation module. Voxel-to-pillar distillation distills sparse 3D features to BEV features for middle layers to make the BEV-based model aware of more structural and geometric information. Label-weight distillation helps the model pay more attention to regions with more height information. Finally, we conduct experiments on the SemanticKITTI dataset and Paris-Lille-3D. The results on SemanticKITTI show more than 5% improvement on the test set, especially for classes such as motorcycle and person, with more than 15% improvement. HuatuoGPT-II, One-stage Training for Medical Adaption of LLMsJunying Chen, Xidong Wang, Ke Ji et al.
Adapting a language model into a specific domain, a.k.a `domain adaption', is a common practice when specialized knowledge, e.g. medicine, is not encapsulated in a general language model like Llama2. The challenge lies in the heterogeneity of data across the two training stages, as it varies in languages, genres, or formats. To tackle this and simplify the learning protocol, we propose to transform heterogeneous data, from the both pre-training and supervised stages, into a unified, simple input-output pair format. We validate the new protocol in the domains where proprietary LLMs like ChatGPT perform relatively poorly, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine. The developed model, HuatuoGPT-II, has shown state-of-the-art performance in Chinese medicine domain on a number of benchmarks, e.g. medical licensing exams. It even outperforms proprietary models like ChatGPT and GPT-4 in some aspects, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Expert manual evaluations further validate HuatuoGPT-II's advantages over existing LLMs. Notably, HuatuoGPT-II was benchmarked in a fresh Chinese National Medical Licensing Examination where it achieved the best performance, showcasing not only its effectiveness but also its generalization capabilities.
Uncovering the Potential of ChatGPT for Discourse Analysis in Dialogue: An Empirical StudyYaxin Fan, Feng Jiang, Peifeng Li et al.
Large language models, like ChatGPT, have shown remarkable capability in many downstream tasks, yet their ability to understand discourse structures of dialogues remains less explored, where it requires higher level capabilities of understanding and reasoning. In this paper, we aim to systematically inspect ChatGPT's performance in two discourse analysis tasks: topic segmentation and discourse parsing, focusing on its deep semantic understanding of linear and hierarchical discourse structures underlying dialogue. To instruct ChatGPT to complete these tasks, we initially craft a prompt template consisting of the task description, output format, and structured input. Then, we conduct experiments on four popular topic segmentation datasets and two discourse parsing datasets. The experimental results showcase that ChatGPT demonstrates proficiency in identifying topic structures in general-domain conversations yet struggles considerably in specific-domain conversations. We also found that ChatGPT hardly understands rhetorical structures that are more complex than topic structures. Our deeper investigation indicates that ChatGPT can give more reasonable topic structures than human annotations but only linearly parses the hierarchical rhetorical structures. In addition, we delve into the impact of in-context learning (e.g., chain-of-thought) on ChatGPT and conduct the ablation study on various prompt components, which can provide a research foundation for future work. Topic Shift Detection in Chinese Dialogues: Corpus and BenchmarkJiangyi Lin, Yaxin Fan, Feng Jiang et al.
Dialogue topic shift detection is to detect whether an ongoing topic has shifted or should shift in a dialogue, which can be divided into two categories, i.e., response-known task and response-unknown task. Currently, only a few investigated the latter, because it is still a challenge to predict the topic shift without the response information. In this paper, we first annotate a Chinese Natural Topic Dialogue (CNTD) corpus consisting of 1308 dialogues to fill the gap in the Chinese natural conversation topic corpus. And then we focus on the response-unknown task and propose a teacher-student framework based on hierarchical contrastive learning to predict the topic shift without the response. Specifically, the response at high-level teacher-student is introduced to build the contrastive learning between the response and the context, while the label contrastive learning is constructed at low-level student. The experimental results on our Chinese CNTD and English TIAGE show the effectiveness of our proposed model.

Hierarchical Complementary Learning for Weakly Supervised Object LocalizationSabrina Narimene Benassou, Wuzhen Shi, Feng Jiang et al.
Weakly supervised object localization (WSOL) is a challenging problem which aims to localize objects with only image-level labels. Due to the lack of ground truth bounding boxes, class labels are mainly employed to train the model. This model generates a class activation map (CAM) which activates the most discriminate features. However, the main drawback of CAM is the ability to detect just a part of the object. To solve this problem, some researchers have removed parts from the detected object \cite{b1, b2, b4}, or the image \cite{b3}. The aim of removing parts from image or detected parts of the object is to force the model to detect the other features. However, these methods require one or many hyper-parameters to erase the appropriate pixels on the image, which could involve a loss of information. In contrast, this paper proposes a Hierarchical Complementary Learning Network method (HCLNet) that helps the CNN to perform better classification and localization of objects on the images. HCLNet uses a complementary map to force the network to detect the other parts of the object. Unlike previous works, this method does not need any extras hyper-parameters to generate different CAMs, as well as does not introduce a big loss of information. In order to fuse these different maps, two different fusion strategies known as the addition strategy and the l1-norm strategy have been used. These strategies allowed to detect the whole object while excluding the background. Extensive experiments show that HCLNet obtains better performance than state-of-the-art methods.

Deep-VFX: Deep Action Recognition Driven VFX for Short VideoAo Luo, Ning Xie, Zhijia Tao et al.
Human motion is a key function to communicate information. In the application, short-form mobile video is so popular all over the world such as Tik Tok. The users would like to add more VFX so as to pursue creativity and personlity. Many special effects are added on the short video platform. These gives the users more possibility to show off these personality. The common and traditional way is to create the template of VFX. However, in order to synthesis the perfect, the users have to tedious attempt to grasp the timing and rhythm of new templates. It is not easy-to-use especially for the mobile app. This paper aims to change the VFX synthesis by motion driven instead of the traditional template matching. We propose the AI method to improve this VFX synthesis. In detail, in order to add the special effect on the human body. The skeleton extraction is essential in this system. We also propose a novel form of LSTM to find out the user's intention by action recognition. The experiment shows that our system enables to generate VFX for short video more easier and efficient.

On Compression of Unsupervised Neural Nets by Pruning Weak ConnectionsZhiwen Zuo, Lei Zhao, Liwen Zuo et al.
Unsupervised neural nets such as Restricted Boltzmann Machines(RBMs) and Deep Belif Networks(DBNs), are powerful in automatic feature extraction, unsupervised weight initialization and density estimation. In this paper,we demonstrate that the parameters of these neural nets can be dramatically reduced without affecting their performance. We describe a method to reduce the parameters required by RBM which is the basic building block for deep architectures. Further we propose an unsupervised sparse deep architectures selection algorithm to form sparse deep neural networks.Experimental results show that there is virtually no loss in either generative or discriminative performance.

Convolutional Neural Networks based Intra Prediction for HEVCWenxue Cui, Tao Zhang, Shengping Zhang et al.
Traditional intra prediction methods for HEVC rely on using the nearest reference lines for predicting a block, which ignore much richer context between the current block and its neighboring blocks and therefore cause inaccurate prediction especially when weak spatial correlation exists between the current block and the reference lines. To overcome this problem, in this paper, an intra prediction convolutional neural network (IPCNN) is proposed for intra prediction, which exploits the rich context of the current block and therefore is capable of improving the accuracy of predicting the current block. Meanwhile, the predictions of the three nearest blocks can also be refined. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that directly applies CNNs to intra prediction for HEVC. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of applying CNNs to intra prediction and achieved significant performance improvement compared to traditional intra prediction methods.
