InternLM-XComposer: A Vision-Language Large Model for Advanced Text-image Comprehension and Composition

Pan Zhang, Xiaoyi Dong, Bin Wang et al. · pku

We propose InternLM-XComposer, a vision-language large model that enables advanced image-text comprehension and composition. The innovative nature of our model is highlighted by three appealing properties: 1) Interleaved Text-Image Composition: InternLM-XComposer can effortlessly generate coherent and contextual articles that seamlessly integrate images, providing a more engaging and immersive reading experience. Simply provide a writing instruction, and our system will generate the corresponding manuscript. It can intelligently identify the areas in the text where images would enhance the content and automatically insert the most appropriate visual candidates. 2) Comprehension with Rich Multilingual Knowledge: The text-image comprehension is empowered by training on an extensive multi-modal multilingual database with carefully crafted strategies, resulting in a deep understanding of visual content. 3) State-of-the-art Performance: Our model consistently achieves state-of-the-art results across various mainstream benchmarks for vision-language foundational models, including MME Benchmark, MMBench, MMBench-CN, Seed-Bench, CCBench (Chinese Cultural Benchmark), QBench and Tiny LVLM. Owing to the absence of established metrics for quantitatively assessing text-image composition, we have devised a robust evaluation procedure that comprises both human and GPT4-Vision (GPT4-V) to ensure reliability. Notably, our InternLM-XComposer achieves competitive text-image composition scores compared to public solutions, including GPT4-V and GPT3.5. Collectively, InternLM-XComposer seamlessly blends advanced text-image comprehension and composition, revolutionizing vision-language interaction and offering new insights and opportunities. The InternLM-XComposer model series are publicly available at https://github.com/InternLM/InternLM-XComposer.

HGDNet: A Height-Hierarchy Guided Dual-Decoder Network for Single View Building Extraction and Height Estimation

Chaoran Lu, Ningning Cao, Pan Zhang et al. · deepmind

Unifying the correlative single-view satellite image building extraction and height estimation tasks indicates a promising way to share representations and acquire generalist model for large-scale urban 3D reconstruction. However, the common spatial misalignment between building footprints and stereo-reconstructed nDSM height labels incurs degraded performance on both tasks. To address this issue, we propose a Height-hierarchy Guided Dual-decoder Network (HGDNet) to estimate building height. Under the guidance of synthesized discrete height-hierarchy nDSM, auxiliary height-hierarchical building extraction branch enhance the height estimation branch with implicit constraints, yielding an accuracy improvement of more than 6% on the DFC 2023 track2 dataset. Additional two-stage cascade architecture is adopted to achieve more accurate building extraction. Experiments on the DFC 2023 Track 2 dataset shows the superiority of the proposed method in building height estimation (δ1:0.8012), instance extraction (AP50:0.7730), and the final average score 0.7871 ranks in the first place in test phase.

Fine-grained building roof instance segmentation based on domain adapted pretraining and composite dual-backbone

Guozhang Liu, Baochai Peng, Ting Liu et al. · deepmind

The diversity of building architecture styles of global cities situated on various landforms, the degraded optical imagery affected by clouds and shadows, and the significant inter-class imbalance of roof types pose challenges for designing a robust and accurate building roof instance segmentor. To address these issues, we propose an effective framework to fulfill semantic interpretation of individual buildings with high-resolution optical satellite imagery. Specifically, the leveraged domain adapted pretraining strategy and composite dual-backbone greatly facilitates the discriminative feature learning. Moreover, new data augmentation pipeline, stochastic weight averaging (SWA) training and instance segmentation based model ensemble in testing are utilized to acquire additional performance boost. Experiment results show that our approach ranks in the first place of the 2023 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest (DFC) Track 1 test phase ($mAP_{50}$:50.6\%). Note-worthily, we have also explored the potential of multimodal data fusion with both optical satellite imagery and SAR data.

InternLM-XComposer2: Mastering Free-form Text-Image Composition and Comprehension in Vision-Language Large Model

Xiaoyi Dong, Pan Zhang, Yuhang Zang et al. · pku

We introduce InternLM-XComposer2, a cutting-edge vision-language model excelling in free-form text-image composition and comprehension. This model goes beyond conventional vision-language understanding, adeptly crafting interleaved text-image content from diverse inputs like outlines, detailed textual specifications, and reference images, enabling highly customizable content creation. InternLM-XComposer2 proposes a Partial LoRA (PLoRA) approach that applies additional LoRA parameters exclusively to image tokens to preserve the integrity of pre-trained language knowledge, striking a balance between precise vision understanding and text composition with literary talent. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of InternLM-XComposer2 based on InternLM2-7B in producing high-quality long-text multi-modal content and its exceptional vision-language understanding performance across various benchmarks, where it not only significantly outperforms existing multimodal models but also matches or even surpasses GPT-4V and Gemini Pro in certain assessments. This highlights its remarkable proficiency in the realm of multimodal understanding. The InternLM-XComposer2 model series with 7B parameters are publicly available at https://github.com/InternLM/InternLM-XComposer.

DualFocus: Integrating Macro and Micro Perspectives in Multi-modal Large Language Models

Yuhang Cao, Pan Zhang, Xiaoyi Dong et al.

We present DualFocus, a novel framework for integrating macro and micro perspectives within multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) to enhance vision-language task performance. Current MLLMs typically singularly focus on inputs at a predefined resolution, resulting in deficiencies in detailed questions involving local regions. We introduced a DualFocus mechanism where the model concentrates on the image from a macro perspective, responses to the question, and identifies suitable sub-regions to zoom in for subsequent micro perspective analysis. Via the integration of answers from both macro and micro perspectives, the model is adept at addressing tasks that encompass global, detailed, and combined considerations. To endows the DualFocus mechanism in MLLMs, we curated a tailored dataset derived from the Visual Genome (VG) and adapted it to align with the training regimen of DualFocus. Through comparative studies across different model sizes and benchmarks, we demonstrate DualFocus's superiority in balancing detailed examination with holistic insight, significantly reducing hallucination instances in MLLMs and improving their performance in various vision-language tasks.

SongComposer: A Large Language Model for Lyric and Melody Generation in Song Composition

Shuangrui Ding, Zihan Liu, Xiaoyi Dong et al.

Creating lyrics and melodies for the vocal track in a symbolic format, known as song composition, demands expert musical knowledge of melody, an advanced understanding of lyrics, and precise alignment between them. Despite achievements in sub-tasks such as lyric generation, lyric-to-melody, and melody-to-lyric, etc, a unified model for song composition has not yet been achieved. In this paper, we introduce SongComposer, a pioneering step towards a unified song composition model that can readily create symbolic lyrics and melodies following instructions. SongComposer is a music-specialized large language model (LLM) that, for the first time, integrates the capability of simultaneously composing lyrics and melodies into LLMs by leveraging three key innovations: 1) a flexible tuple format for word-level alignment of lyrics and melodies, 2) an extended tokenizer vocabulary for song notes, with scalar initialization based on musical knowledge to capture rhythm, and 3) a multi-stage pipeline that captures musical structure, starting with motif-level melody patterns and progressing to phrase-level structure for improved coherence. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SongComposer outperforms advanced LLMs, including GPT-4, in tasks such as lyric-to-melody generation, melody-to-lyric generation, song continuation, and text-to-song creation. Moreover, we will release SongCompose, a large-scale dataset for training, containing paired lyrics and melodies in Chinese and English.

HiFlow: Training-free High-Resolution Image Generation with Flow-Aligned Guidance

Jiazi Bu, Pengyang Ling, Yujie Zhou et al.

Text-to-image (T2I) diffusion/flow models have drawn considerable attention recently due to their remarkable ability to deliver flexible visual creations. Still, high-resolution image synthesis presents formidable challenges due to the scarcity and complexity of high-resolution content. Recent approaches have investigated training-free strategies to enable high-resolution image synthesis with pre-trained models. However, these techniques often struggle with generating high-quality visuals and tend to exhibit artifacts or low-fidelity details, as they typically rely solely on the endpoint of the low-resolution sampling trajectory while neglecting intermediate states that are critical for preserving structure and synthesizing finer detail. To this end, we present HiFlow, a training-free and model-agnostic framework to unlock the resolution potential of pre-trained flow models. Specifically, HiFlow establishes a virtual reference flow within the high-resolution space that effectively captures the characteristics of low-resolution flow information, offering guidance for high-resolution generation through three key aspects: initialization alignment for low-frequency consistency, direction alignment for structure preservation, and acceleration alignment for detail fidelity. By leveraging such flow-aligned guidance, HiFlow substantially elevates the quality of high-resolution image synthesis of T2I models and demonstrates versatility across their personalized variants. Extensive experiments validate HiFlow's capability in achieving superior high-resolution image quality over state-of-the-art methods.
