Granite Vision: a lightweight, open-source multimodal model for enterprise Intelligence

We introduce Granite Vision, a lightweight large language model with vision capabilities, specifically designed to excel in enterprise use cases, particularly in visual document understanding. Our model is trained on a comprehensive instruction-following dataset, including document-related tasks, such as content extraction from tables, charts, diagrams, sketches, and infographics, as well as general image tasks. The architecture of Granite Vision is centered around visual modality alignment with a decoder-only, 2 billion parameter Granite large language model. Additionally, we introduce a dedicated safety classification approach in test-time that leverages a sparse set of attention vectors to identify potential harmful inputs. Despite its lightweight architecture, Granite Vision achieves strong results in standard benchmarks related to visual document understanding, as well as on the LiveXiv benchmark, which is designed to avoid test set contamination by using a constantly updated corpus of recently published Arxiv papers. We are releasing the model under the Apache-2 license, allowing for both research and commercial use, while offering complete visibility into the training data and other relevant details. Granite Embedding Models

We introduce the Granite Embedding models, a family of encoder-based embedding models designed for retrieval tasks, spanning dense-retrieval and sparse retrieval architectures, with both English and Multilingual capabilities. This report provides the technical details of training these highly effective 12 layer embedding models, along with their efficient 6 layer distilled counterparts. Extensive evaluations show that the models, developed with techniques like retrieval oriented pretraining, contrastive finetuning, knowledge distillation, and model merging significantly outperform publicly available models of similar sizes on both internal IBM retrieval and search tasks, and have equivalent performance on widely used information retrieval benchmarks, while being trained on high-quality data suitable for enterprise use. We publicly release all our Granite Embedding models under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing both research and commercial use at https://huggingface.co/collections/ibm-granite.

ContextNest: Verifiable Context Governance for Autonomous AI Agent

Autonomous AI agents increasingly depend on external knowledge stores, yet most retrieval pipelines provide relevance without durable guarantees of provenance, version identity, integrity, traceability, or point-in-time reconstruction. We formalize this as context governance and present ContextNext, an open specification and reference implementation for governed AI-consumable knowledge vaults. ContextNext does not replace Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG); it supplies the governance layer beneath retrieval, determining which artifacts are approved, current, attributable, and integrity-verified before retrieval systems operate over them. The specification combines typed Markdown documents with metadata, deterministic set-algebraic selectors, contextnest:// URI references, SHA-256 hash-chained version histories, graph-level checkpoints, source nodes for live data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and audit traces of agent context consumption. These mechanisms let organizations reconstruct which knowledge versions informed an agent output and whether those versions were AI-eligible when consumed. We report first empirical results from two controlled experiments. In a stale-version attack isolating the governance-versus-retrieval failure mode, governed selection strictly Pareto-dominates BM25 sparse retrieval, with higher answer-quality pass rate (97% versus 93-90%) at about one-third the input-token cost. In a retrieval-determinism experiment over a 1,060-document corpus, deterministic selectors and BM25 return stable document sets across repeated identical queries (Jaccard 1.0), while a dense+HNSW baseline is non-deterministic on 80% of queries (mean Jaccard 0.611, worst case 0.210). These results suggest that context governance addresses failure modes retrieval quality alone is not designed to resolve. We release a core engine, CLI, and MCP server under open licenses.
