Short-Long Convolutions Help Hardware-Efficient Linear Attention to Focus on Long Sequences

Zicheng Liu, Siyuan Li, Li Wang et al.

To mitigate the computational complexity in the self-attention mechanism on long sequences, linear attention utilizes computation tricks to achieve linear complexity, while state space models (SSMs) popularize a favorable practice of using non-data-dependent memory pattern, i.e., emphasize the near and neglect the distant, to processing sequences. Recent studies have shown the priorities by combining them as one. However, the efficiency of linear attention remains only at the theoretical level in a causal setting, and SSMs require various designed constraints to operate effectively on specific data. Therefore, in order to unveil the true power of the hybrid design, the following two issues need to be addressed: (1) hardware-efficient implementation for linear attention and (2) stabilization of SSMs. To achieve this, we leverage the thought of tiling and hierarchy to propose CHELA (short-long Convolutions with Hardware-Efficient Linear Attention), which replaces SSMs with short-long convolutions and implements linear attention in a divide-and-conquer manner. This approach enjoys global abstraction and data-dependent selection from stable SSM and linear attention while maintaining real linear complexity. Our comprehensive experiments on the Long Range Arena benchmark and language modeling tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Emergency Computing: An Adaptive Collaborative Inference Method Based on Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning

Weiqi Fu, Lianming Xu, Xin Wu et al.

In achieving effective emergency response, the timely acquisition of environmental information, seamless command data transmission, and prompt decision-making are crucial. This necessitates the establishment of a resilient emergency communication dedicated network, capable of providing communication and sensing services even in the absence of basic infrastructure. In this paper, we propose an Emergency Network with Sensing, Communication, Computation, Caching, and Intelligence (E-SC3I). The framework incorporates mechanisms for emergency computing, caching, integrated communication and sensing, and intelligence empowerment. E-SC3I ensures rapid access to a large user base, reliable data transmission over unstable links, and dynamic network deployment in a changing environment. However, these advantages come at the cost of significant computation overhead. Therefore, we specifically concentrate on emergency computing and propose an adaptive collaborative inference method (ACIM) based on hierarchical reinforcement learning. Experimental results demonstrate our method's ability to achieve rapid inference of AI models with constrained computational and communication resources.

DM algorithms in health industry

Li Wang

This survey reviews several approaches of data mining (DM) in healthindustry from many research groups world wide. The focus is on modern multi-core processors built into today's commodity computers, which are typically found at university institutes both as small server and workstation computers. So they are deliberately not high-performance computers. Modern multi-core processors consist of several (2 to over 100) computer cores, which work independently of each other according to the principle of "multiple instruction multiple data" (MIMD). They have a common main memory (shared memory). Each of these computer cores has several (2-16) arithmetic-logic units, which can simultaneously carry out the same arithmetic operation on several data in a vector-like manner (single instruction multiple data, SIMD). DM algorithms must use both types of parallelism (SIMD and MIMD), with access to the main memory (centralized component) being the main barrier to increased efficiency. This is important for DM in healthindustry applications like ECG, EEG, CT, SPECT, fMRI, DTI, ultrasound, microscopy, dermascopy, etc.

Complex Relation Extraction: Challenges and Opportunities

Haiyun Jiang, Qiaoben Bao, Qiao Cheng et al.

Relation extraction aims to identify the target relations of entities in texts. Relation extraction is very important for knowledge base construction and text understanding. Traditional binary relation extraction, including supervised, semi-supervised and distant supervised ones, has been extensively studied and significant results are achieved. In recent years, many complex relation extraction tasks, i.e., the variants of simple binary relation extraction, are proposed to meet the complex applications in practice. However, there is no literature to fully investigate and summarize these complex relation extraction works so far. In this paper, we first report the recent progress in traditional simple binary relation extraction. Then we summarize the existing complex relation extraction tasks and present the definition, recent progress, challenges and opportunities for each task.

Privacy Preserving PCA for Multiparty Modeling

Yingting Liu, Chaochao Chen, Longfei Zheng et al.

In this paper, we present a general multiparty modeling paradigm with Privacy Preserving Principal Component Analysis (PPPCA) for horizontally partitioned data. PPPCA can accomplish multiparty cooperative execution of PCA under the premise of keeping plaintext data locally. We also propose implementations using two techniques, i.e., homomorphic encryption and secret sharing. The output of PPPCA can be sent directly to data consumer to build any machine learning models. We conduct experiments on three UCI benchmark datasets and a real-world fraud detection dataset. Results show that the accuracy of the model built upon PPPCA is the same as the model with PCA that is built based on centralized plaintext data.

Secure Social Recommendation based on Secret Sharing

Chaochao Chen, Liang Li, Bingzhe Wu et al.

Nowadays, privacy preserving machine learning has been drawing much attention in both industry and academy. Meanwhile, recommender systems have been extensively adopted by many commercial platforms (e.g. Amazon) and they are mainly built based on user-item interactions. Besides, social platforms (e.g. Facebook) have rich resources of user social information. It is well known that social information, which is rich on social platforms such as Facebook, are useful to recommender systems. It is anticipated to combine the social information with the user-item ratings to improve the overall recommendation performance. Most existing recommendation models are built based on the assumptions that the social information are available. However, different platforms are usually reluctant to (or cannot) share their data due to certain concerns. In this paper, we first propose a SEcure SOcial RECommendation (SeSoRec) framework which can (1) collaboratively mine knowledge from social platform to improve the recommendation performance of the rating platform, and (2) securely keep the raw data of both platforms. We then propose a Secret Sharing based Matrix Multiplication (SSMM) protocol to optimize SeSoRec and prove its correctness and security theoretically. By applying minibatch gradient descent, SeSoRec has linear time complexities in terms of both computation and communication. The comprehensive experimental results on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed SeSoRec and SSMM.

Time-sensitive Customer Churn Prediction based on PU Learning

Li Wang, Chaochao Chen, Jun Zhou et al.

With the fast development of Internet companies throughout the world, customer churn has become a serious concern. To better help the companies retain their customers, it is important to build a customer churn prediction model to identify the customers who are most likely to churn ahead of time. In this paper, we propose a Time-sensitive Customer Churn Prediction (TCCP) framework based on Positive and Unlabeled (PU) learning technique. Specifically, we obtain the recent data by shortening the observation period, and start to train model as long as enough positive samples are collected, ignoring the absence of the negative examples. We conduct thoroughly experiments on real industry data from Alipay.com. The experimental results demonstrate that TCCP outperforms the rule-based models and the traditional supervised learning models.
