A Survey on Evaluation of Large Language ModelsYupeng Chang, Xu Wang, Jindong Wang et al. · cmu, pku
Large language models (LLMs) are gaining increasing popularity in both academia and industry, owing to their unprecedented performance in various applications. As LLMs continue to play a vital role in both research and daily use, their evaluation becomes increasingly critical, not only at the task level, but also at the society level for better understanding of their potential risks. Over the past years, significant efforts have been made to examine LLMs from various perspectives. This paper presents a comprehensive review of these evaluation methods for LLMs, focusing on three key dimensions: what to evaluate, where to evaluate, and how to evaluate. Firstly, we provide an overview from the perspective of evaluation tasks, encompassing general natural language processing tasks, reasoning, medical usage, ethics, educations, natural and social sciences, agent applications, and other areas. Secondly, we answer the `where' and `how' questions by diving into the evaluation methods and benchmarks, which serve as crucial components in assessing performance of LLMs. Then, we summarize the success and failure cases of LLMs in different tasks. Finally, we shed light on several future challenges that lie ahead in LLMs evaluation. Our aim is to offer invaluable insights to researchers in the realm of LLMs evaluation, thereby aiding the development of more proficient LLMs. Our key point is that evaluation should be treated as an essential discipline to better assist the development of LLMs. We consistently maintain the related open-source materials at: https://github.com/MLGroupJLU/LLM-eval-survey.

Expansion and Shrinkage of Localization for Weakly-Supervised Semantic SegmentationJinlong Li, Zequn Jie, Xu Wang et al.
Generating precise class-aware pseudo ground-truths, a.k.a, class activation maps (CAMs), is essential for weakly-supervised semantic segmentation. The original CAM method usually produces incomplete and inaccurate localization maps. To tackle with this issue, this paper proposes an Expansion and Shrinkage scheme based on the offset learning in the deformable convolution, to sequentially improve the recall and precision of the located object in the two respective stages. In the Expansion stage, an offset learning branch in a deformable convolution layer, referred as "expansion sampler" seeks for sampling increasingly less discriminative object regions, driven by an inverse supervision signal that maximizes image-level classification loss. The located more complete object in the Expansion stage is then gradually narrowed down to the final object region during the Shrinkage stage. In the Shrinkage stage, the offset learning branch of another deformable convolution layer, referred as "shrinkage sampler", is introduced to exclude the false positive background regions attended in the Expansion stage to improve the precision of the localization maps. We conduct various experiments on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014 to well demonstrate the superiority of our method over other state-of-the-art methods for weakly-supervised semantic segmentation. LAD-RCNN:A Powerful Tool for Livestock Face Detection and NormalizationLing Sun, Guiqiong Liu, Xunping Jiang et al.
With the demand for standardized large-scale livestock farming and the development of artificial intelligence technology, a lot of research in area of animal face recognition were carried on pigs, cattle, sheep and other livestock. Face recognition consists of three sub-task: face detection, face normalizing and face identification. Most of animal face recognition study focuses on face detection and face identification. Animals are often uncooperative when taking photos, so the collected animal face images are often in arbitrary directions. The use of non-standard images may significantly reduce the performance of face recognition system. However, there is no study on normalizing of the animal face image with arbitrary directions. In this study, we developed a light-weight angle detection and region-based convolutional network (LAD-RCNN) containing a new rotation angle coding method that can detect the rotation angle and the location of animal face in one-stage. LAD-RCNN has a frame rate of 72.74 FPS (including all steps) on a single GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU. LAD-RCNN has been evaluated on multiple dataset including goat dataset and gaot infrared image. Evaluation result show that the AP of face detection was more than 95% and the deviation between the detected rotation angle and the ground-truth rotation angle were less than 0.036 (i.e. 6.48°) on all the test dataset. This shows that LAD-RCNN has excellent performance on livestock face and its direction detection, and therefore it is very suitable for livestock face detection and Normalizing. Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation via Progressive Patch LearningJinlong Li, Zequn Jie, Xu Wang et al.
Most of the existing semantic segmentation approaches with image-level class labels as supervision, highly rely on the initial class activation map (CAM) generated from the standard classification network. In this paper, a novel "Progressive Patch Learning" approach is proposed to improve the local details extraction of the classification, producing the CAM better covering the whole object rather than only the most discriminative regions as in CAMs obtained in conventional classification models. "Patch Learning" destructs the feature maps into patches and independently processes each local patch in parallel before the final aggregation. Such a mechanism enforces the network to find weak information from the scattered discriminative local parts, achieving enhanced local details sensitivity. "Progressive Patch Learning" further extends the feature destruction and patch learning to multi-level granularities in a progressive manner. Cooperating with a multi-stage optimization strategy, such a "Progressive Patch Learning" mechanism implicitly provides the model with the feature extraction ability across different locality-granularities. As an alternative to the implicit multi-granularity progressive fusion approach, we additionally propose an explicit method to simultaneously fuse features from different granularities in a single model, further enhancing the CAM quality on the full object coverage. Our proposed method achieves outstanding performance on the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset e.g., with 69.6$% mIoU on the test set), which surpasses most existing weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods. DualNER: A Dual-Teaching framework for Zero-shot Cross-lingual Named Entity RecognitionJiali Zeng, Yufan Jiang, Yongjing Yin et al.
We present DualNER, a simple and effective framework to make full use of both annotated source language corpus and unlabeled target language text for zero-shot cross-lingual named entity recognition (NER). In particular, we combine two complementary learning paradigms of NER, i.e., sequence labeling and span prediction, into a unified multi-task framework. After obtaining a sufficient NER model trained on the source data, we further train it on the target data in a {\it dual-teaching} manner, in which the pseudo-labels for one task are constructed from the prediction of the other task. Moreover, based on the span prediction, an entity-aware regularization is proposed to enhance the intrinsic cross-lingual alignment between the same entities in different languages. Graph Property Prediction on Open Graph Benchmark: A Winning Solution by Graph Neural Architecture SearchXu Wang, Huan Zhao, Lanning Wei et al. · tsinghua
Aiming at two molecular graph datasets and one protein association subgraph dataset in OGB graph classification task, we design a graph neural network framework for graph classification task by introducing PAS(Pooling Architecture Search). At the same time, we improve it based on the GNN topology design method F2GNN to further design the feature selection and fusion strategies, so as to further improve the performance of the model in the graph property prediction task while overcoming the over smoothing problem of deep GNN training. Finally, a performance breakthrough is achieved on these three datasets, which is significantly better than other methods with fixed aggregate function. It is proved that the NAS method has high generalization ability for multiple tasks and the advantage of our method in processing graph property prediction tasks.

IronForge: An Open, Secure, Fair, Decentralized Federated LearningGuangsheng Yu, Xu Wang, Caijun Sun et al.
Federated learning (FL) provides an effective machine learning (ML) architecture to protect data privacy in a distributed manner. However, the inevitable network asynchrony, the over-dependence on a central coordinator, and the lack of an open and fair incentive mechanism collectively hinder its further development. We propose \textsc{IronForge}, a new generation of FL framework, that features a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based data structure and eliminates the need for central coordinators to achieve fully decentralized operations. \textsc{IronForge} runs in a public and open network, and launches a fair incentive mechanism by enabling state consistency in the DAG, so that the system fits in networks where training resources are unevenly distributed. In addition, dedicated defense strategies against prevalent FL attacks on incentive fairness and data privacy are presented to ensure the security of \textsc{IronForge}. Experimental results based on a newly developed testbed FLSim highlight the superiority of \textsc{IronForge} to the existing prevalent FL frameworks under various specifications in performance, fairness, and security. To the best of our knowledge, \textsc{IronForge} is the first secure and fully decentralized FL framework that can be applied in open networks with realistic network and training settings.

AvatarVerse: High-quality & Stable 3D Avatar Creation from Text and PoseHuichao Zhang, Bowen Chen, Hao Yang et al.
Creating expressive, diverse and high-quality 3D avatars from highly customized text descriptions and pose guidance is a challenging task, due to the intricacy of modeling and texturing in 3D that ensure details and various styles (realistic, fictional, etc). We present AvatarVerse, a stable pipeline for generating expressive high-quality 3D avatars from nothing but text descriptions and pose guidance. In specific, we introduce a 2D diffusion model conditioned on DensePose signal to establish 3D pose control of avatars through 2D images, which enhances view consistency from partially observed scenarios. It addresses the infamous Janus Problem and significantly stablizes the generation process. Moreover, we propose a progressive high-resolution 3D synthesis strategy, which obtains substantial improvement over the quality of the created 3D avatars. To this end, the proposed AvatarVerse pipeline achieves zero-shot 3D modeling of 3D avatars that are not only more expressive, but also in higher quality and fidelity than previous works. Rigorous qualitative evaluations and user studies showcase AvatarVerse's superiority in synthesizing high-fidelity 3D avatars, leading to a new standard in high-quality and stable 3D avatar creation. SwiftAvatar: Efficient Auto-Creation of Parameterized Stylized Character on Arbitrary Avatar EnginesShizun Wang, Weihong Zeng, Xu Wang et al.
The creation of a parameterized stylized character involves careful selection of numerous parameters, also known as the "avatar vectors" that can be interpreted by the avatar engine. Existing unsupervised avatar vector estimation methods that auto-create avatars for users, however, often fail to work because of the domain gap between realistic faces and stylized avatar images. To this end, we propose SwiftAvatar, a novel avatar auto-creation framework that is evidently superior to previous works. SwiftAvatar introduces dual-domain generators to create pairs of realistic faces and avatar images using shared latent codes. The latent codes can then be bridged with the avatar vectors as pairs, by performing GAN inversion on the avatar images rendered from the engine using avatar vectors. Through this way, we are able to synthesize paired data in high-quality as many as possible, consisting of avatar vectors and their corresponding realistic faces. We also propose semantic augmentation to improve the diversity of synthesis. Finally, a light-weight avatar vector estimator is trained on the synthetic pairs to implement efficient auto-creation. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SwiftAvatar on two different avatar engines. The superiority and advantageous flexibility of SwiftAvatar are also verified in both subjective and objective evaluations.

MiMo-Audio: Audio Language Models are Few-Shot LearnersXiaomi LLM-Core Team, Dong Zhang, Gang Wang et al.
Existing audio language models typically rely on task-specific fine-tuning to accomplish particular audio tasks. In contrast, humans are able to generalize to new audio tasks with only a few examples or simple instructions. GPT-3 has shown that scaling next-token prediction pretraining enables strong generalization capabilities in text, and we believe this paradigm is equally applicable to the audio domain. By scaling MiMo-Audio's pretraining data to over one hundred million of hours, we observe the emergence of few-shot learning capabilities across a diverse set of audio tasks. We develop a systematic evaluation of these capabilities and find that MiMo-Audio-7B-Base achieves SOTA performance on both speech intelligence and audio understanding benchmarks among open-source models. Beyond standard metrics, MiMo-Audio-7B-Base generalizes to tasks absent from its training data, such as voice conversion, style transfer, and speech editing. MiMo-Audio-7B-Base also demonstrates powerful speech continuation capabilities, capable of generating highly realistic talk shows, recitations, livestreaming and debates. At the post-training stage, we curate a diverse instruction-tuning corpus and introduce thinking mechanisms into both audio understanding and generation. MiMo-Audio-7B-Instruct achieves open-source SOTA on audio understanding benchmarks (MMSU, MMAU, MMAR, MMAU-Pro), spoken dialogue benchmarks (Big Bench Audio, MultiChallenge Audio) and instruct-TTS evaluations, approaching or surpassing closed-source models. Sliced Maximal Information Coefficient: A Training-Free Approach for Image Quality Assessment EnhancementKang Xiao, Xu Wang, Yulin He et al.
Full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) models generally operate by measuring the visual differences between a degraded image and its reference. However, existing FR-IQA models including both the classical ones (eg, PSNR and SSIM) and deep-learning based measures (eg, LPIPS and DISTS) still exhibit limitations in capturing the full perception characteristics of the human visual system (HVS). In this paper, instead of designing a new FR-IQA measure, we aim to explore a generalized human visual attention estimation strategy to mimic the process of human quality rating and enhance existing IQA models. In particular, we model human attention generation by measuring the statistical dependency between the degraded image and the reference image. The dependency is captured in a training-free manner by our proposed sliced maximal information coefficient and exhibits surprising generalization in different IQA measures. Experimental results verify the performance of existing IQA models can be consistently improved when our attention module is incorporated. Correspondence-Free Domain Alignment for Unsupervised Cross-Domain Image RetrievalXu Wang, Dezhong Peng, Ming Yan et al.
Cross-domain image retrieval aims at retrieving images across different domains to excavate cross-domain classificatory or correspondence relationships. This paper studies a less-touched problem of cross-domain image retrieval, i.e., unsupervised cross-domain image retrieval, considering the following practical assumptions: (i) no correspondence relationship, and (ii) no category annotations. It is challenging to align and bridge distinct domains without cross-domain correspondence. To tackle the challenge, we present a novel Correspondence-free Domain Alignment (CoDA) method to effectively eliminate the cross-domain gap through In-domain Self-matching Supervision (ISS) and Cross-domain Classifier Alignment (CCA). To be specific, ISS is presented to encapsulate discriminative information into the latent common space by elaborating a novel self-matching supervision mechanism. To alleviate the cross-domain discrepancy, CCA is proposed to align distinct domain-specific classifiers. Thanks to the ISS and CCA, our method could encode the discrimination into the domain-invariant embedding space for unsupervised cross-domain image retrieval. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted on four benchmark datasets compared with six state-of-the-art methods.

Approximation of Invariant Measure for Damped Stochastic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation via an Ergodic Numerical SchemeChuchu Chen, Jialin Hong, Xu Wang
In order to inherit numerically the ergodicity of the damped stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise, we propose a fully discrete scheme, whose spatial direction is based on spectral Galerkin method and temporal direction is based on a modification of the implicit Euler scheme. We not only prove the unique ergodicity of the numerical solutions of both spatial semi-discretization and full discretization, but also present error estimations on invariant measures, which gives order $2$ in spatial direction and order ${\frac12}$ in temporal direction.

PhotoVerse: Tuning-Free Image Customization with Text-to-Image Diffusion ModelsLi Chen, Mengyi Zhao, Yiheng Liu et al.
Personalized text-to-image generation has emerged as a powerful and sought-after tool, empowering users to create customized images based on their specific concepts and prompts. However, existing approaches to personalization encounter multiple challenges, including long tuning times, large storage requirements, the necessity for multiple input images per identity, and limitations in preserving identity and editability. To address these obstacles, we present PhotoVerse, an innovative methodology that incorporates a dual-branch conditioning mechanism in both text and image domains, providing effective control over the image generation process. Furthermore, we introduce facial identity loss as a novel component to enhance the preservation of identity during training. Remarkably, our proposed PhotoVerse eliminates the need for test time tuning and relies solely on a single facial photo of the target identity, significantly reducing the resource cost associated with image generation. After a single training phase, our approach enables generating high-quality images within only a few seconds. Moreover, our method can produce diverse images that encompass various scenes and styles. The extensive evaluation demonstrates the superior performance of our approach, which achieves the dual objectives of preserving identity and facilitating editability. High order conformal symplectic and ergodic schemes for stochastic Langevin equation via generating functionsJialin Hong, Liying Sun, Xu Wang
In this paper, we consider the stochastic Langevin equation with additive noises, which possesses both conformal symplectic geometric structure and ergodicity. We propose a methodology of constructing high weak order conformal symplectic schemes by converting the equation into an equivalent autonomous stochastic Hamiltonian system and modifying the associated generating function. To illustrate this approach, we construct a specific second order numerical scheme, and prove that its symplectic form dissipates exponentially. Moreover, for the linear case, the proposed scheme is also shown to inherit the ergodicity of the original system, and the temporal average of the numerical solution is a proper approximation of the ergodic limit over long time. Numerical experiments are given to verify these theoretical results.

Numerical Analysis on Ergodic Limit of Approximations for Stochastic NLS Equation via Multi-symplectic SchemeJialin Hong, Xu Wang, Liying Zhang
We consider a finite dimensional approximation of the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation driven by multiplicative noise, which is derived by applying a symplectic method to the original equation in spatial direction. Both the unique ergodicity and the charge conservation law for this finite dimensional approximation are obtained on the unit sphere. To simulate the ergodic limit over long time for the finite dimensional approximation, we discretize it further in temporal direction to obtain a fully discrete scheme, which inherits not only the stochastic multi-symplecticity and charge conservation law of the original equation but also the unique ergodicity of the finite dimensional approximation. The temporal average of the fully discrete numerical solution is proved to converge to the ergodic limit with order one with respect to the time step for a fixed spatial step. Numerical experiments verify our theoretical results on charge conservation, ergodicity and weak convergence.

Gaze Estimation Approach Using Deep Differential Residual NetworkLongzhao Huang, Yujie Li, Xu Wang et al.
Gaze estimation, which is a method to determine where a person is looking at given the person's full face, is a valuable clue for understanding human intention. Similarly to other domains of computer vision, deep learning (DL) methods have gained recognition in the gaze estimation domain. However, there are still gaze calibration problems in the gaze estimation domain, thus preventing existing methods from further improving the performances. An effective solution is to directly predict the difference information of two human eyes, such as the differential network (Diff-Nn). However, this solution results in a loss of accuracy when using only one inference image. We propose a differential residual model (DRNet) combined with a new loss function to make use of the difference information of two eye images. We treat the difference information as auxiliary information. We assess the proposed model (DRNet) mainly using two public datasets (1) MpiiGaze and (2) Eyediap. Considering only the eye features, DRNet outperforms the state-of-the-art gaze estimation methods with $angular-error$ of 4.57 and 6.14 using MpiiGaze and Eyediap datasets, respectively. Furthermore, the experimental results also demonstrate that DRNet is extremely robust to noise images.

A General ReLearner: Empowering Spatiotemporal Prediction by Re-learning Input-label ResidualJiaming Ma, Binwu Wang, Pengkun Wang et al.
Prevailing spatiotemporal prediction models typically operate under a forward (unidirectional) learning paradigm, in which models extract spatiotemporal features from historical observation input and map them to target spatiotemporal space for future forecasting (label). However, these models frequently exhibit suboptimal performance when spatiotemporal discrepancies exist between inputs and labels, for instance, when nodes with similar time-series inputs manifest distinct future labels, or vice versa. To address this limitation, we propose explicitly incorporating label features during the training phase. Specifically, we introduce the Spatiotemporal Residual Theorem, which generalizes the conventional unidirectional spatiotemporal prediction paradigm into a bidirectional learning framework. Building upon this theoretical foundation, we design an universal module, termed ReLearner, which seamlessly augments Spatiotemporal Neural Networks (STNNs) with a bidirectional learning capability via an auxiliary inverse learning process. In this process, the model relearns the spatiotemporal feature residuals between input data and future data. The proposed ReLearner comprises two critical components: (1) a Residual Learning Module, designed to effectively disentangle spatiotemporal feature discrepancies between input and label representations; and (2) a Residual Smoothing Module, employed to smooth residual terms and facilitate stable convergence. Extensive experiments conducted on 11 real-world datasets across 14 backbone models demonstrate that ReLearner significantly enhances the predictive performance of existing STNNs.Our code is available on GitHub.

Adaptive Meta-learner via Gradient Similarity for Few-shot Text ClassificationTianyi Lei, Honghui Hu, Qiaoyang Luo et al.
Few-shot text classification aims to classify the text under the few-shot scenario. Most of the previous methods adopt optimization-based meta learning to obtain task distribution. However, due to the neglect of matching between the few amount of samples and complicated models, as well as the distinction between useful and useless task features, these methods suffer from the overfitting issue. To address this issue, we propose a novel Adaptive Meta-learner via Gradient Similarity (AMGS) method to improve the model generalization ability to a new task. Specifically, the proposed AMGS alleviates the overfitting based on two aspects: (i) acquiring the potential semantic representation of samples and improving model generalization through the self-supervised auxiliary task in the inner loop, (ii) leveraging the adaptive meta-learner via gradient similarity to add constraints on the gradient obtained by base-learner in the outer loop. Moreover, we make a systematic analysis of the influence of regularization on the entire framework. Experimental results on several benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed AMGS consistently improves few-shot text classification performance compared with the state-of-the-art optimization-based meta-learning approaches.

Symplectic Runge-Kutta Methods for Hamiltonian Systems Driven by Gaussian Rough PathsJialin Hong, Chuying Huang, Xu Wang
We consider Hamiltonian systems driven by multi-dimensional Gaussian processes in rough path sense, which include fractional Brownian motions with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/4,1/2]$. We indicate that the phase flow preserves the symplectic structure almost surely and this property could be inherited by symplectic Runge--Kutta methods, which are implicit methods in general. If the vector fields belong to $Lip^γ$, we obtain the solvability of Runge--Kutta methods and the pathwise convergence rates. For linear and skew symmetric vector fields, we focus on the midpoint scheme to give corresponding results. Numerical experiments verify our theoretical analysis.

Q-Doc: Benchmarking Document Image Quality Assessment Capabilities in Multi-modal Large Language ModelsJiaxi Huang, Dongxu Wu, Hanwei Zhu et al.
The rapid advancement of Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has expanded their capabilities beyond high-level vision tasks. Nevertheless, their potential for Document Image Quality Assessment (DIQA) remains underexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose Q-Doc, a three-tiered evaluation framework for systematically probing DIQA capabilities of MLLMs at coarse, middle, and fine granularity levels. a) At the coarse level, we instruct MLLMs to assign quality scores to document images and analyze their correlation with Quality Annotations. b) At the middle level, we design distortion-type identification tasks, including single-choice and multi-choice tests for multi-distortion scenarios. c) At the fine level, we introduce distortion-severity assessment where MLLMs classify distortion intensity against human-annotated references. Our evaluation demonstrates that while MLLMs possess nascent DIQA abilities, they exhibit critical limitations: inconsistent scoring, distortion misidentification, and severity misjudgment. Significantly, we show that Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting substantially enhances performance across all levels. Our work provides a benchmark for DIQA capabilities in MLLMs, revealing pronounced deficiencies in their quality perception and promising pathways for enhancement. 3D Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation with 2D Vision-Language GuidanceXiaoxu Xu, Yitian Yuan, Jinlong Li et al.
In this paper, we propose 3DSS-VLG, a weakly supervised approach for 3D Semantic Segmentation with 2D Vision-Language Guidance, an alternative approach that a 3D model predicts dense-embedding for each point which is co-embedded with both the aligned image and text spaces from the 2D vision-language model. Specifically, our method exploits the superior generalization ability of the 2D vision-language models and proposes the Embeddings Soft-Guidance Stage to utilize it to implicitly align 3D embeddings and text embeddings. Moreover, we introduce the Embeddings Specialization Stage to purify the feature representation with the help of a given scene-level label, specifying a better feature supervised by the corresponding text embedding. Thus, the 3D model is able to gain informative supervisions both from the image embedding and text embedding, leading to competitive segmentation performances. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to investigate 3D weakly supervised semantic segmentation by using the textual semantic information of text category labels. Moreover, with extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments, we present that our 3DSS-VLG is able not only to achieve the state-of-the-art performance on both S3DIS and ScanNet datasets, but also to maintain strong generalization capability.

Parareal exponential $θ$-scheme for longtime simulation of stochastic Schrödinger equations with weak dampingJialin Hong, Xu Wang, Liying Zhang
A parareal algorithm based on an exponential $θ$-scheme is proposed for the stochastic Schrödinger equation with weak damping and additive noise. It proceeds as a two-level temporal parallelizable integrator with the exponential $θ$-scheme as the propagator on the coarse grid. The proposed algorithm in the linear case increases the convergence order from one to $k$ for $θ\in[0,1]\setminus\{\frac12\}$. In particular, the convergence order increases to $2k$ when $θ=\frac12$ due to the symmetry of the algorithm. Furthermore, the algorithm is proved to be suitable for longtime simulation based on the analysis of the invariant distributions for the exponential $θ$-scheme. The convergence condition for longtime simulation is also established for the proposed algorithm in the nonlinear case, which indicates the superiority of implicit schemes. Numerical experiments are dedicated to illustrate the best choice of the iteration number $k$, as well as the convergence order of the algorithm for different choices of $θ$.

Adoption and Use of LLMs at an Academic Medical CenterNigam H. Shah, Nerissa Ambers, Abby Pandya et al.
While large language models (LLMs) can support clinical documentation needs, standalone tools struggle with "workflow friction" from manual data entry. We developed ChatEHR, a system that enables the use of LLMs with the entire patient timeline spanning several years. ChatEHR enables automations - which are static combinations of prompts and data that perform a fixed task - and interactive use in the electronic health record (EHR) via a user interface (UI). The resulting ability to sift through patient medical records for diverse use-cases such as pre-visit chart review, screening for transfer eligibility, monitoring for surgical site infections, and chart abstraction, redefines LLM use as an institutional capability. This system, accessible after user-training, enables continuous monitoring and evaluation of LLM use. In 1.5 years, we built 7 automations and 1075 users have trained to become routine users of the UI, engaging in 23,000 sessions in the first 3 months of launch. For automations, being model-agnostic and accessing multiple types of data was essential for matching specific clinical or administrative tasks with the most appropriate LLM. Benchmark-based evaluations proved insufficient for monitoring and evaluation of the UI, requiring new methods to monitor performance. Generation of summaries was the most frequent task in the UI, with an estimated 0.73 hallucinations and 1.60 inaccuracies per generation. The resulting mix of cost savings, time savings, and revenue growth required a value assessment framework to prioritize work as well as quantify the impact of using LLMs. Initial estimates are $6M savings in the first year of use, without quantifying the benefit of the better care offered. Such a "build-from-within" strategy provides an opportunity for health systems to maintain agency via a vendor-agnostic, internally governed LLM platform.

DialogQAE: N-to-N Question Answer Pair Extraction from Customer Service ChatlogXin Zheng, Tianyu Liu, Haoran Meng et al.
Harvesting question-answer (QA) pairs from customer service chatlog in the wild is an efficient way to enrich the knowledge base for customer service chatbots in the cold start or continuous integration scenarios. Prior work attempts to obtain 1-to-1 QA pairs from growing customer service chatlog, which fails to integrate the incomplete utterances from the dialog context for composite QA retrieval. In this paper, we propose N-to-N QA extraction task in which the derived questions and corresponding answers might be separated across different utterances. We introduce a suite of generative/discriminative tagging based methods with end-to-end and two-stage variants that perform well on 5 customer service datasets and for the first time setup a benchmark for N-to-N DialogQAE with utterance and session level evaluation metrics. With a deep dive into extracted QA pairs, we find that the relations between and inside the QA pairs can be indicators to analyze the dialogue structure, e.g. information seeking, clarification, barge-in and elaboration. We also show that the proposed models can adapt to different domains and languages, and reduce the labor cost of knowledge accumulation in the real-world product dialogue platform.

DBGroup: Dual-Branch Point Grouping for Weakly Supervised 3D Instance SegmentationXuexun Liu, Xiaoxu Xu, Qiudan Zhang et al.
Weakly supervised 3D instance segmentation is essential for 3D scene understanding, especially as the growing scale of data and high annotation costs associated with fully supervised approaches. Existing methods primarily rely on two forms of weak supervision: one-thing-one-click annotations and bounding box annotations, both of which aim to reduce labeling efforts. However, these approaches still encounter limitations, including labor-intensive annotation processes, high complexity, and reliance on expert annotators. To address these challenges, we propose \textbf{DBGroup}, a two-stage weakly supervised 3D instance segmentation framework that leverages scene-level annotations as a more efficient and scalable alternative. In the first stage, we introduce a Dual-Branch Point Grouping module to generate pseudo labels guided by semantic and mask cues extracted from multi-view images. To further improve label quality, we develop two refinement strategies: Granularity-Aware Instance Merging and Semantic Selection and Propagation. The second stage involves multi-round self-training on an end-to-end instance segmentation network using the refined pseudo-labels. Additionally, we introduce an Instance Mask Filter strategy to address inconsistencies within the pseudo labels. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DBGroup achieves competitive performance compared to sparse-point-level supervised 3D instance segmentation methods, while surpassing state-of-the-art scene-level supervised 3D semantic segmentation approaches. HoME: Hierarchy of Multi-Gate Experts for Multi-Task Learning at KuaishouXu Wang, Jiangxia Cao, Zhiyi Fu et al.
In this paper, we present the practical problems and the lessons learned at short-video services from Kuaishou. In industry, a widely-used multi-task framework is the Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) paradigm, which always introduces some shared and specific experts for each task and then uses gate networks to measure related experts' contributions. Although the MoE achieves remarkable improvements, we still observe three anomalies that seriously affect model performances in our iteration: (1) Expert Collapse: We found that experts' output distributions are significantly different, and some experts have over 90% zero activations with ReLU, making it hard for gate networks to assign fair weights to balance experts. (2) Expert Degradation: Ideally, the shared-expert aims to provide predictive information for all tasks simultaneously. Nevertheless, we find that some shared-experts are occupied by only one task, which indicates that shared-experts lost their ability but degenerated into some specific-experts. (3) Expert Underfitting: In our services, we have dozens of behavior tasks that need to be predicted, but we find that some data-sparse prediction tasks tend to ignore their specific-experts and assign large weights to shared-experts. The reason might be that the shared-experts can perceive more gradient updates and knowledge from dense tasks, while specific-experts easily fall into underfitting due to their sparse behaviors. Motivated by those observations, we propose HoME to achieve a simple, efficient and balanced MoE system for multi-task learning.

Automated 3D Pre-Training for Molecular Property PredictionXu Wang, Huan Zhao, Weiwei Tu et al.
Molecular property prediction is an important problem in drug discovery and materials science. As geometric structures have been demonstrated necessary for molecular property prediction, 3D information has been combined with various graph learning methods to boost prediction performance. However, obtaining the geometric structure of molecules is not feasible in many real-world applications due to the high computational cost. In this work, we propose a novel 3D pre-training framework (dubbed 3D PGT), which pre-trains a model on 3D molecular graphs, and then fine-tunes it on molecular graphs without 3D structures. Based on fact that bond length, bond angle, and dihedral angle are three basic geometric descriptors corresponding to a complete molecular 3D conformer, we first develop a multi-task generative pre-train framework based on these three attributes. Next, to automatically fuse these three generative tasks, we design a surrogate metric using the \textit{total energy} to search for weight distribution of the three pretext task since total energy corresponding to the quality of 3D conformer.Extensive experiments on 2D molecular graphs are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and generalization ability of the proposed 3D PGT compared to various pre-training baselines.

TwinRouterBench: Fast Static and Live Dynamic Evaluation for Realistic Agentic LLM RoutingPei Yang, Wanyi Chen, Tongyun Yang et al.
LLM routing matters most in long-horizon applications such as coding agents, deep research systems, and computer-use agents, where a single user request triggers many model calls. Routing each call to the cheapest sufficient model can cut costs without sacrificing quality, yet existing router benchmarks evaluate routers only on one-shot prompts. They never expose the router-visible prefix at an intermediate agent step, never test whether a cheaper replacement preserves downstream task success, and often rely on online LLM judges at evaluation time. We introduce TwinRouterBench, a step-level routing benchmark with two tracks. The static track provides 970 router-visible prefixes from 520 instances across SWE-bench, BFCL, mtRAG, QMSum, and PinchBench, each paired with an execution-verified target tier estimated under a released downgrade-and-cascade protocol; scoring is deterministic arithmetic over tier labels, trajectory membership, and token costs, with no online evaluator-side LLM judge. The dynamic track supplies a harness that runs routers on the full 500-case SWE-bench Verified suite; in this paper we report a 100-case held-out evaluation disjoint from the static SWE supervision split. At each LLM call the router selects a concrete model from a locked pool, and success is measured by official task resolution and realized API spend. EagleVision: A Dual-Stage Framework with BEV-grounding-based Chain-of-Thought for Spatial IntelligenceJiaxu Wan, Xu Wang, Mengwei Xie et al.
Recent spatial intelligence approaches typically attach 3D cues to 2D reasoning pipelines or couple MLLMs with black-box reconstruction modules, leading to weak spatial consistency, limited viewpoint diversity, and evidence chains that cannot be traced back to supporting views. Frameworks for "thinking with images" (e.g., ChatGPT-o3 and DeepEyes) show that stepwise multimodal reasoning can emerge by interleaving hypothesis formation with active acquisition of visual evidence, but they do not address three key challenges in spatial Chain-of-Thought (CoT): building global space perception under strict token budgets, explicitly associating 3D hypotheses with video frames for verification, and designing spatially grounded rewards for reinforcement learning. To address these issues, we present EagleVision, a dual-stage framework for progressive spatial cognition through macro perception and micro verification. In the macro perception stage, EagleVision employs a semantics-perspective-fusion determinantal point process (SPF-DPP) to select a compact set of geometry- and semantics-aware keyframes from long videos under a fixed token budget. In the micro verification stage, we formalize spatial CoT as BEV-grounded pose querying: the agent iteratively predicts poses on a BEV plane, retrieves the nearest real frames, and is trained purely by reinforcement learning with a spatial grounding reward that scores the consistency between predicted poses and observed views. On VSI-Bench, EagleVision achieves state-of-the-art performance among open-source vision-language models, demonstrating strong and generalizable spatial understanding.

As a distributed learning, Federated Learning (FL) faces two challenges: the unbalanced distribution of training data among participants, and the model attack by Byzantine nodes. In this paper, we consider the long-tailed distribution with the presence of Byzantine nodes in the FL scenario. A novel two-layer aggregation method is proposed for the rejection of malicious models and the advisable selection of valuable models containing tail class data information. We introduce the concept of think tank to leverage the wisdom of all participants. Preliminary experiments validate that the think tank can make effective model selections for global aggregation.

Qwen-Scope: Turning Sparse Features into Development Tools for Large Language ModelsBoyi Deng, Xu Wang, Yaoning Wang et al.
Large language models have achieved remarkable capabilities across diverse tasks, yet their internal decision-making processes remain largely opaque, limiting our ability to inspect, control, and systematically improve them. This opacity motivates a growing body of research in mechanistic interpretability, with sparse autoencoders (SAEs) emerging as one of the most promising tools for decomposing model activations into sparse, interpretable feature representations. We introduce Qwen-Scope, an open-source suite of SAEs built on the Qwen model family, comprising 14 groups of SAEs across 7 model variants from the Qwen3 and Qwen3.5 series, covering both dense and mixture-of-expert architectures. Built on top of these SAEs, we show that SAEs can go beyond post-hoc analysis to serve as practical interfaces for model development along four directions: (i) inference-time steering, where SAE feature directions control language, concepts, and preferences without modifying model weights; (ii) evaluation analysis, where activated SAE features provide a representation-level proxy for benchmark redundancy and capability coverage; (iii) data-centric workflows, where SAE features support multilingual toxicity classification and safety-oriented data synthesis; and (iv) post-training optimization, where SAE-derived signals are incorporated into supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning objectives to mitigate undesirable behaviors such as code-switching and repetition. Together, these results demonstrate that SAEs can serve not only as post-hoc analysis tools, but also as reusable representation-level interfaces for diagnosing, controlling, evaluating, and improving large language models. By open-sourcing Qwen-Scope, we aim to support mechanistic research and accelerate practical workflows that connect model internals to downstream behavior.

We give a theoretical framework of stochastic non-canonical Hamiltonian systems as well as their modified symplectic structure which is named stochastic K-symplectic structure. The framework can be applied to the study of the Lotka--Volterra model perturbed by external noises. In terms of internal properties of the stochastic Lotka--Volterra model, we propose different kinds of stochastic K-symplectic integrators which could inherit the positivity of the solution. The K-symplectic conditions are also obtained to ensure that the proposed schemes admit the same geometric structure as the original system. Besides, the first-order condition of the proposed schemes in $L^1(Ω)$ sense are given based on the uniform boundedness of both the exact solution and the numerical one. Several numerical examples are illustrated to verify above properties of proposed schemes compared with non-K-symplectic ones.

In this paper, we investigate the convergence order in probability of a novel ergodic numerical scheme for damped stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an additive noise. Theoretical analysis shows that our scheme is of order one in probability under appropriate assumptions for the initial value and noise. Meanwhile, we show that our scheme possesses the unique ergodicity and preserves the discrete conformal multi-symplectic conservation law. Numerical experiments are given to show the longtime behavior of the discrete charge and the time average of the numerical solution, and to test the convergence order, which verify our theoretical results.

Boundary Corrected Multi-scale Fusion Network for Real-time Semantic SegmentationTianjiao Jiang, Yi Jin, Tengfei Liang et al.
Image semantic segmentation aims at the pixel-level classification of images, which has requirements for both accuracy and speed in practical application. Existing semantic segmentation methods mainly rely on the high-resolution input to achieve high accuracy and do not meet the requirements of inference time. Although some methods focus on high-speed scene parsing with lightweight architectures, they can not fully mine semantic features under low computation with relatively low performance. To realize the real-time and high-precision segmentation, we propose a new method named Boundary Corrected Multi-scale Fusion Network, which uses the designed Low-resolution Multi-scale Fusion Module to extract semantic information. Moreover, to deal with boundary errors caused by low-resolution feature map fusion, we further design an additional Boundary Corrected Loss to constrain overly smooth features. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves a state-of-the-art balance of accuracy and speed for the real-time semantic segmentation.

Graph-Free Learning in Graph-Structured Data: A More Efficient and Accurate Spatiotemporal Learning PerspectiveXu Wang, Pengfei Gu, Pengkun Wang et al.
Spatiotemporal learning, which aims at extracting spatiotemporal correlations from the collected spatiotemporal data, is a research hotspot in recent years. And considering the inherent graph structure of spatiotemporal data, recent works focus on capturing spatial dependencies by utilizing Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) to aggregate vertex features with the guidance of adjacency matrices. In this paper, with extensive and deep-going experiments, we comprehensively analyze existing spatiotemporal graph learning models and reveal that extracting adjacency matrices with carefully design strategies, which are viewed as the key of enhancing performance on graph learning, are largely ineffective. Meanwhile, based on these experiments, we also discover that the aggregation itself is more important than the way that how vertices are aggregated. With these preliminary, a novel efficient Graph-Free Spatial (GFS) learning module based on layer normalization for capturing spatial correlations in spatiotemporal graph learning. The proposed GFS module can be easily plugged into existing models for replacing all graph convolution components. Rigorous theoretical proof demonstrates that the time complexity of GFS is significantly better than that of graph convolution operation. Extensive experiments verify the superiority of GFS in both the perspectives of efficiency and learning effect in processing graph-structured data especially extreme large scale graph data.

ProSR: Process-Shaped Spatial Reasoning for Reliable Chain-of-Thought in VLMsJiangyang Li, Cong Wan, Changjie Wu et al.
Reliable spatial reasoning remains a core bottleneck for vision-language models (VLMs). Existing mainstream training paradigms for spatial reasoning largely rely on outcome alignment or process imitation, lacking explicit constraints on the reasoning process, and therefore struggle to ensure genuine visual dependence and stable reasoning trajectories. In this paper, we construct a high-quality CoT dataset covering diverse spatial phenomena and diagnose the model's reasoning process, revealing two typical types of process degradation during reinforcement learning optimization: Spurious Grounding, which bypasses visual evidence, and Tail Instability, where uncertainty abnormally rises in the later stage of reasoning. To address these issues, we propose ProSR, a process-shaping optimization framework for spatial reasoning. Through a Counterfactual Invariance Penalty and a Tail Drift Penalty, ProSR extends the optimization objective from single answer correctness to two process-level dimensions: visual dependence and trajectory stability. Experiments on multiple complex and out-of-distribution spatial reasoning benchmarks show that ProSR improves answer accuracy while generating reasoning trajectories that are more stable and more dependent on visual evidence.

This paper focuses on the strong convergence rate of both Runge--Kutta methods and simplified step-$N$ Euler schemes for stochastic differential equations driven by multi-dimensional fractional Brownian motions with $H\in(\frac12,1)$. Based on the continuous dependence of both stage values and numerical schemes on driving noises, order conditions of Runge--Kutta methods are proposed for the optimal strong convergence rate $2H-\frac12$. This provides an alternative way to analyze the convergence rate of explicit schemes by adding `stage values' such that the schemes are comparable with Runge--Kutta methods. Taking advantage of this technique, the optimal strong convergence rate of simplified step-N Euler scheme is obtained, which gives an answer to a conjecture in $[3]$ when $H\in(\frac12,1)$. Numerical experiments verify the theoretial convergence rate.

CSCLog: A Component Subsequence Correlation-Aware Log Anomaly Detection MethodLing Chen, Chaodu Song, Xu Wang et al.
Anomaly detection based on system logs plays an important role in intelligent operations, which is a challenging task due to the extremely complex log patterns. Existing methods detect anomalies by capturing the sequential dependencies in log sequences, which ignore the interactions of subsequences. To this end, we propose CSCLog, a Component Subsequence Correlation-Aware Log anomaly detection method, which not only captures the sequential dependencies in subsequences, but also models the implicit correlations of subsequences. Specifically, subsequences are extracted from log sequences based on components and the sequential dependencies in subsequences are captured by Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs). An implicit correlation encoder is introduced to model the implicit correlations of subsequences adaptively. In addition, Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs) are employed to accomplish the information interactions of subsequences. Finally, attention mechanisms are exploited to fuse the embeddings of all subsequences. Extensive experiments on four publicly available log datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of CSCLog, outperforming the best baseline by an average of 7.41% in Macro F1-Measure.

SoK: Agentic Skills -- Beyond Tool Use in LLM AgentsYanna Jiang, Delong Li, Haiyu Deng et al.
Agentic systems increasingly rely on reusable procedural capabilities, \textit{a.k.a., agentic skills}, to execute long-horizon workflows reliably. These capabilities are callable modules that package procedural knowledge with explicit applicability conditions, execution policies, termination criteria, and reusable interfaces. Unlike one-off plans or atomic tool calls, skills operate (and often do well) across tasks. This paper maps the skill layer across the full lifecycle (discovery, practice, distillation, storage, composition, evaluation, and update) and introduces two complementary taxonomies. The first is a system-level set of \textbf{seven design patterns} capturing how skills are packaged and executed in practice, from metadata-driven progressive disclosure and executable code skills to self-evolving libraries and marketplace distribution. The second is an orthogonal \textbf{representation $\times$ scope} taxonomy describing what skills \emph{are} (natural language, code, policy, hybrid) and what environments they operate over (web, OS, software engineering, robotics). We analyze the security and governance implications of skill-based agents, covering supply-chain risks, prompt injection via skill payloads, and trust-tiered execution, grounded by a case study of the ClawHavoc campaign in which nearly 1{,}200 malicious skills infiltrated a major agent marketplace, exfiltrating API keys, cryptocurrency wallets, and browser credentials at scale. We further survey deterministic evaluation approaches, anchored by recent benchmark evidence that curated skills can substantially improve agent success rates while self-generated skills may degrade them. We conclude with open challenges toward robust, verifiable, and certifiable skills for real-world autonomous agents.

On parareal algorithms for semilinear parabolic Stochastic PDEsCharles-Edouard Bréhier, Xu Wang
Parareal algorithms are studied for semilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations. These algorithms proceed as two-level integrators, with fine and coarse schemes, and have been designed to achieve a `parallel in real time' implementation. In this work, the fine integrator is given by the exponential Euler scheme. Two choices for the coarse integrator are considered: the linear implicit Euler scheme, and the exponential Euler scheme. The influence on the performance of the parareal algorithm, of the choice of the coarse integrator, of the regularity of the noise, and of the number of parareal iterations, is investigated, with theoretical analysis results and with extensive numerical experiments.

ByCAN: Reverse Engineering Controller Area Network (CAN) Messages from Bit to Byte LevelXiaojie Lin, Baihe Ma, Xu Wang et al.
As the primary standard protocol for modern cars, the Controller Area Network (CAN) is a critical research target for automotive cybersecurity threats and autonomous applications. As the decoding specification of CAN is a proprietary black-box maintained by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), conducting related research and industry developments can be challenging without a comprehensive understanding of the meaning of CAN messages. In this paper, we propose a fully automated reverse-engineering system, named ByCAN, to reverse engineer CAN messages. ByCAN outperforms existing research by introducing byte-level clusters and integrating multiple features at both byte and bit levels. ByCAN employs the clustering and template matching algorithms to automatically decode the specifications of CAN frames without the need for prior knowledge. Experimental results demonstrate that ByCAN achieves high accuracy in slicing and labeling performance, i.e., the identification of CAN signal boundaries and labels. In the experiments, ByCAN achieves slicing accuracy of 80.21%, slicing coverage of 95.21%, and labeling accuracy of 68.72% for general labels when analyzing the real-world CAN frames.

Multi-modal Learning based Prediction for DiseaseYaran Chen, Xueyu Chen, Yu Han et al.
Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease, which can be predicted accurately to prevent advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. While, a liver biopsy, the gold standard for NAFLD diagnosis, is invasive, expensive, and prone to sampling errors. Therefore, non-invasive studies are extremely promising, yet they are still in their infancy due to the lack of comprehensive research data and intelligent methods for multi-modal data. This paper proposes a NAFLD diagnosis system (DeepFLDDiag) combining a comprehensive clinical dataset (FLDData) and a multi-modal learning based NAFLD prediction method (DeepFLD). The dataset includes over 6000 participants physical examinations, laboratory and imaging studies, extensive questionnaires, and facial images of partial participants, which is comprehensive and valuable for clinical studies. From the dataset, we quantitatively analyze and select clinical metadata that most contribute to NAFLD prediction. Furthermore, the proposed DeepFLD, a deep neural network model designed to predict NAFLD using multi-modal input, including metadata and facial images, outperforms the approach that only uses metadata. Satisfactory performance is also verified on other unseen datasets. Inspiringly, DeepFLD can achieve competitive results using only facial images as input rather than metadata, paving the way for a more robust and simpler non-invasive NAFLD diagnosis.

AirQualityBench: A Realistic Evaluation Benchmark for Global Air Quality ForecastingXing Xu, Xu Wang, Yudong Zhang et al.
Air-quality forecasting models are commonly evaluated on regional, preprocessed, and normalized datasets, where missing observations are removed or artificially completed. Such protocols simplify comparison but hide the conditions that dominate real monitoring networks: uneven global coverage, structured missingness, heterogeneous pollutant scales, and deployment cost. We introduce \textbf{AirQualityBench}, a global multi-pollutant benchmark designed to evaluate forecasting models under these realistic conditions. The benchmark contains hourly observations from 3,720 monitoring stations over 2021--2025, covers six major pollutants, and preserves provider-native observation masks. Rather than imputing a dense data tensor, AirQualityBench exposes missingness as part of the forecasting problem and reports errors on valid future observations after inverse transformation to physical concentration scales. Evaluating representative spatio-temporal models under this unified protocol shows that strong performance on sanitized datasets does not reliably transfer to global, fragmented monitoring streams. AirQualityBench therefore serves as a realistic testbed for scalable, mask-aware, and physically interpretable air-quality forecasting. PIVM: Diffusion-Based Prior-Integrated Variation Modeling for Anatomically Precise Abdominal CT SynthesisDinglun He, Baoming Zhang, Xu Wang et al.
Abdominal CT data are limited by high annotation costs and privacy constraints, which hinder the development of robust segmentation and diagnostic models. We present a Prior-Integrated Variation Modeling (PIVM) framework, a diffusion-based method for anatomically accurate CT image synthesis. Instead of generating full images from noise, PIVM predicts voxel-wise intensity variations relative to organ-specific intensity priors derived from segmentation labels. These priors and labels jointly guide the diffusion process, ensuring spatial alignment and realistic organ boundaries. Unlike latent-space diffusion models, our approach operates directly in image space while preserving the full Hounsfield Unit (HU) range, capturing fine anatomical textures without smoothing. RoleBreak: Character Hallucination as a Jailbreak Attack in Role-Playing SystemsYihong Tang, Bo Wang, Xu Wang et al.
Role-playing systems powered by large language models (LLMs) have become increasingly influential in emotional communication applications. However, these systems are susceptible to character hallucinations, where the model deviates from predefined character roles and generates responses that are inconsistent with the intended persona. This paper presents the first systematic analysis of character hallucination from an attack perspective, introducing the RoleBreak framework. Our framework identifies two core mechanisms-query sparsity and role-query conflict-as key factors driving character hallucination. Leveraging these insights, we construct a novel dataset, RoleBreakEval, to evaluate existing hallucination mitigation techniques. Our experiments reveal that even enhanced models trained to minimize hallucination remain vulnerable to attacks. To address these vulnerabilities, we propose a novel defence strategy, the Narrator Mode, which generates supplemental context through narration to mitigate role-query conflicts and improve query generalization. Experimental results demonstrate that Narrator Mode significantly outperforms traditional refusal-based strategies by reducing hallucinations, enhancing fidelity to character roles and queries, and improving overall narrative coherence.

A Survey on Data Augmentation in Large Model EraYue Zhou, Chenlu Guo, Xu Wang et al.
Large models, encompassing large language and diffusion models, have shown exceptional promise in approximating human-level intelligence, garnering significant interest from both academic and industrial spheres. However, the training of these large models necessitates vast quantities of high-quality data, and with continuous updates to these models, the existing reservoir of high-quality data may soon be depleted. This challenge has catalyzed a surge in research focused on data augmentation methods. Leveraging large models, these data augmentation techniques have outperformed traditional approaches. This paper offers an exhaustive review of large model-driven data augmentation methods, adopting a comprehensive perspective. We begin by establishing a classification of relevant studies into three main categories: image augmentation, text augmentation, and paired data augmentation. Following this, we delve into various data post-processing techniques pertinent to large model-based data augmentation. Our discussion then expands to encompass the array of applications for these data augmentation methods within natural language processing, computer vision, and audio signal processing. We proceed to evaluate the successes and limitations of large model-based data augmentation across different scenarios. Concluding our review, we highlight prospective challenges and avenues for future exploration in the field of data augmentation. Our objective is to furnish researchers with critical insights, ultimately contributing to the advancement of more sophisticated large models. NextFlow: Unified Sequential Modeling Activates Multimodal Understanding and GenerationHuichao Zhang, Liao Qu, Yiheng Liu et al.
We present NextFlow, a unified decoder-only autoregressive transformer trained on 6 trillion interleaved text-image discrete tokens. By leveraging a unified vision representation within a unified autoregressive architecture, NextFlow natively activates multimodal understanding and generation capabilities, unlocking abilities of image editing, interleaved content and video generation. Motivated by the distinct nature of modalities - where text is strictly sequential and images are inherently hierarchical - we retain next-token prediction for text but adopt next-scale prediction for visual generation. This departs from traditional raster-scan methods, enabling the generation of 1024x1024 images in just 5 seconds - orders of magnitude faster than comparable AR models. We address the instabilities of multi-scale generation through a robust training recipe. Furthermore, we introduce a prefix-tuning strategy for reinforcement learning. Experiments demonstrate that NextFlow achieves state-of-the-art performance among unified models and rivals specialized diffusion baselines in visual quality.

Towards Process-Oriented, Modular, and Versatile Question Generation that Meets Educational NeedsXu Wang, Simin Fan, Jessica Houghton et al.
NLP-powered automatic question generation (QG) techniques carry great pedagogical potential of saving educators' time and benefiting student learning. Yet, QG systems have not been widely adopted in classrooms to date. In this work, we aim to pinpoint key impediments and investigate how to improve the usability of automatic QG techniques for educational purposes by understanding how instructors construct questions and identifying touch points to enhance the underlying NLP models. We perform an in-depth need finding study with 11 instructors across 7 different universities, and summarize their thought processes and needs when creating questions. While instructors show great interests in using NLP systems to support question design, none of them has used such tools in practice. They resort to multiple sources of information, ranging from domain knowledge to students' misconceptions, all of which missing from today's QG systems. We argue that building effective human-NLP collaborative QG systems that emphasize instructor control and explainability is imperative for real-world adoption. We call for QG systems to provide process-oriented support, use modular design, and handle diverse sources of input.

MiMo: Unlocking the Reasoning Potential of Language Model -- From Pretraining to PosttrainingLLM-Core Xiaomi, Bingquan Xia, Bowen Shen et al. · pku
We present MiMo-7B, a large language model born for reasoning tasks, with optimization across both pre-training and post-training stages. During pre-training, we enhance the data preprocessing pipeline and employ a three-stage data mixing strategy to strengthen the base model's reasoning potential. MiMo-7B-Base is pre-trained on 25 trillion tokens, with additional Multi-Token Prediction objective for enhanced performance and accelerated inference speed. During post-training, we curate a dataset of 130K verifiable mathematics and programming problems for reinforcement learning, integrating a test-difficulty-driven code-reward scheme to alleviate sparse-reward issues and employing strategic data resampling to stabilize training. Extensive evaluations show that MiMo-7B-Base possesses exceptional reasoning potential, outperforming even much larger 32B models. The final RL-tuned model, MiMo-7B-RL, achieves superior performance on mathematics, code and general reasoning tasks, surpassing the performance of OpenAI o1-mini.
