STAR Loss: Reducing Semantic Ambiguity in Facial Landmark Detection

Zhenglin Zhou, Huaxia Li, Hong Liu et al. · tencent-ai

Recently, deep learning-based facial landmark detection has achieved significant improvement. However, the semantic ambiguity problem degrades detection performance. Specifically, the semantic ambiguity causes inconsistent annotation and negatively affects the model's convergence, leading to worse accuracy and instability prediction. To solve this problem, we propose a Self-adapTive Ambiguity Reduction (STAR) loss by exploiting the properties of semantic ambiguity. We find that semantic ambiguity results in the anisotropic predicted distribution, which inspires us to use predicted distribution to represent semantic ambiguity. Based on this, we design the STAR loss that measures the anisotropism of the predicted distribution. Compared with the standard regression loss, STAR loss is encouraged to be small when the predicted distribution is anisotropic and thus adaptively mitigates the impact of semantic ambiguity. Moreover, we propose two kinds of eigenvalue restriction methods that could avoid both distribution's abnormal change and the model's premature convergence. Finally, the comprehensive experiments demonstrate that STAR loss outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmarks, i.e., COFW, 300W, and WFLW, with negligible computation overhead. Identity-Sensitive Knowledge Propagation for Cloth-Changing Person Re-identification

Jianbing Wu, Hong Liu, Wei Shi et al.

Cloth-changing person re-identification (CC-ReID), which aims to match person identities under clothing changes, is a new rising research topic in recent years. However, typical biometrics-based CC-ReID methods often require cumbersome pose or body part estimators to learn cloth-irrelevant features from human biometric traits, which comes with high computational costs. Besides, the performance is significantly limited due to the resolution degradation of surveillance images. To address the above limitations, we propose an effective Identity-Sensitive Knowledge Propagation framework (DeSKPro) for CC-ReID. Specifically, a Cloth-irrelevant Spatial Attention module is introduced to eliminate the distraction of clothing appearance by acquiring knowledge from the human parsing module. To mitigate the resolution degradation issue and mine identity-sensitive cues from human faces, we propose to restore the missing facial details using prior facial knowledge, which is then propagated to a smaller network. After training, the extra computations for human parsing or face restoration are no longer required. Extensive experiments show that our framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. Our code is available at https://github.com/KimbingNg/DeskPro.

Facial-Sketch Synthesis: A New Challenge

Deng-Ping Fan, Ziling Huang, Peng Zheng et al.

This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive study on facial-sketch synthesis (FSS). However, due to the high costs of obtaining hand-drawn sketch datasets, there lacks a complete benchmark for assessing the development of FSS algorithms over the last decade. We first introduce a high-quality dataset for FSS, named FS2K, which consists of 2,104 image-sketch pairs spanning three types of sketch styles, image backgrounds, lighting conditions, skin colors, and facial attributes. FS2K differs from previous FSS datasets in difficulty, diversity, and scalability and should thus facilitate the progress of FSS research. Second, we present the largest-scale FSS investigation by reviewing 89 classical methods, including 25 handcrafted feature-based facial-sketch synthesis approaches, 29 general translation methods, and 35 image-to-sketch approaches. Besides, we elaborate comprehensive experiments on the existing 19 cutting-edge models. Third, we present a simple baseline for FSS, named FSGAN. With only two straightforward components, i.e., facial-aware masking and style-vector expansion, FSGAN surpasses the performance of all previous state-of-the-art models on the proposed FS2K dataset by a large margin. Finally, we conclude with lessons learned over the past years and point out several unsolved challenges. Our code is available at https://github.com/DengPingFan/FSGAN.

Improving Camouflaged Object Detection with the Uncertainty of Pseudo-edge Labels

Nobukatsu Kajiura, Hong Liu, Shin'ichi Satoh

This paper focuses on camouflaged object detection (COD), which is a task to detect objects hidden in the background. Most of the current COD models aim to highlight the target object directly while outputting ambiguous camouflaged boundaries. On the other hand, the performance of the models considering edge information is not yet satisfactory. To this end, we propose a new framework that makes full use of multiple visual cues, i.e., saliency as well as edges, to refine the predicted camouflaged map. This framework consists of three key components, i.e., a pseudo-edge generator, a pseudo-map generator, and an uncertainty-aware refinement module. In particular, the pseudo-edge generator estimates the boundary that outputs the pseudo-edge label, and the conventional COD method serves as the pseudo-map generator that outputs the pseudo-map label. Then, we propose an uncertainty-based module to reduce the uncertainty and noise of such two pseudo labels, which takes both pseudo labels as input and outputs an edge-accurate camouflaged map. Experiments on various COD datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with superior performance to the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Towards Robustness Against Natural Language Word Substitutions

Xinshuai Dong, Anh Tuan Luu, Rongrong Ji et al.

Robustness against word substitutions has a well-defined and widely acceptable form, i.e., using semantically similar words as substitutions, and thus it is considered as a fundamental stepping-stone towards broader robustness in natural language processing. Previous defense methods capture word substitutions in vector space by using either $l_2$-ball or hyper-rectangle, which results in perturbation sets that are not inclusive enough or unnecessarily large, and thus impedes mimicry of worst cases for robust training. In this paper, we introduce a novel \textit{Adversarial Sparse Convex Combination} (ASCC) method. We model the word substitution attack space as a convex hull and leverages a regularization term to enforce perturbation towards an actual substitution, thus aligning our modeling better with the discrete textual space. Based on the ASCC method, we further propose ASCC-defense, which leverages ASCC to generate worst-case perturbations and incorporates adversarial training towards robustness. Experiments show that ASCC-defense outperforms the current state-of-the-arts in terms of robustness on two prevailing NLP tasks, \emph{i.e.}, sentiment analysis and natural language inference, concerning several attacks across multiple model architectures. Besides, we also envision a new class of defense towards robustness in NLP, where our robustly trained word vectors can be plugged into a normally trained model and enforce its robustness without applying any other defense techniques.

Black-Box Dissector: Towards Erasing-based Hard-Label Model Stealing Attack

Yixu Wang, Jie Li, Hong Liu et al.

Previous studies have verified that the functionality of black-box models can be stolen with full probability outputs. However, under the more practical hard-label setting, we observe that existing methods suffer from catastrophic performance degradation. We argue this is due to the lack of rich information in the probability prediction and the overfitting caused by hard labels. To this end, we propose a novel hard-label model stealing method termed \emph{black-box dissector}, which consists of two erasing-based modules. One is a CAM-driven erasing strategy that is designed to increase the information capacity hidden in hard labels from the victim model. The other is a random-erasing-based self-knowledge distillation module that utilizes soft labels from the substitute model to mitigate overfitting. Extensive experiments on four widely-used datasets consistently demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods, with an improvement of at most $8.27\%$. We also validate the effectiveness and practical potential of our method on real-world APIs and defense methods. Furthermore, our method promotes other downstream tasks, \emph{i.e.}, transfer adversarial attacks.

DSBI: Double-Sided Braille Image Dataset and Algorithm Evaluation for Braille Dots Detection

Renqiang Li, Hong Liu, Xiangdong Wan et al.

Braille is an effective way for the visually impaired to learn knowledge and obtain information. Braille image recognition aims to automatically detect Braille dots in the whole Braille image. There is no available public datasets for Braille image recognition to push relevant research and evaluate algorithms. This paper constructs a large-scale Double-Sided Braille Image dataset DSBI with detailed Braille recto dots, verso dots and Braille cells annotation. To quickly annotate Braille images, an auxiliary annotation strategy is proposed, which adopts initial automatic detection of Braille dots and modifies annotation results by convenient human-computer interaction method. This labeling strategy can averagely increase label efficiency by six times for recto dots annotation in one Braille image. Braille dots detection is the core and basic step for Braille image recognition. This paper also evaluates some Braille dots detection methods on our dataset DSBI and gives the benchmark performance of recto dots detection. We have released our Braille images dataset on the GitHub website.
