Spider2-V: How Far Are Multimodal Agents From Automating Data Science and Engineering Workflows?

Ruisheng Cao, Fangyu Lei, Haoyuan Wu et al. · tsinghua

Data science and engineering workflows often span multiple stages, from warehousing to orchestration, using tools like BigQuery, dbt, and Airbyte. As vision language models (VLMs) advance in multimodal understanding and code generation, VLM-based agents could potentially automate these workflows by generating SQL queries, Python code, and GUI operations. This automation can improve the productivity of experts while democratizing access to large-scale data analysis. In this paper, we introduce Spider2-V, the first multimodal agent benchmark focusing on professional data science and engineering workflows, featuring 494 real-world tasks in authentic computer environments and incorporating 20 enterprise-level professional applications. These tasks, derived from real-world use cases, evaluate the ability of a multimodal agent to perform data-related tasks by writing code and managing the GUI in enterprise data software systems. To balance realistic simulation with evaluation simplicity, we devote significant effort to developing automatic configurations for task setup and carefully crafting evaluation metrics for each task. Furthermore, we supplement multimodal agents with comprehensive documents of these enterprise data software systems. Our empirical evaluation reveals that existing state-of-the-art LLM/VLM-based agents do not reliably automate full data workflows (14.0% success). Even with step-by-step guidance, these agents still underperform in tasks that require fine-grained, knowledge-intensive GUI actions (16.2%) and involve remote cloud-hosted workspaces (10.6%). We hope that Spider2-V paves the way for autonomous multimodal agents to transform the automation of data science and engineering workflow. Our code and data are available at https://spider2-v.github.io.

PSHuman: Photorealistic Single-image 3D Human Reconstruction using Cross-Scale Multiview Diffusion and Explicit Remeshing

Peng Li, Wangguandong Zheng, Yuan Liu et al.

Detailed and photorealistic 3D human modeling is essential for various applications and has seen tremendous progress. However, full-body reconstruction from a monocular RGB image remains challenging due to the ill-posed nature of the problem and sophisticated clothing topology with self-occlusions. In this paper, we propose PSHuman, a novel framework that explicitly reconstructs human meshes utilizing priors from the multiview diffusion model. It is found that directly applying multiview diffusion on single-view human images leads to severe geometric distortions, especially on generated faces. To address it, we propose a cross-scale diffusion that models the joint probability distribution of global full-body shape and local facial characteristics, enabling detailed and identity-preserved novel-view generation without any geometric distortion. Moreover, to enhance cross-view body shape consistency of varied human poses, we condition the generative model on parametric models like SMPL-X, which provide body priors and prevent unnatural views inconsistent with human anatomy. Leveraging the generated multi-view normal and color images, we present SMPLX-initialized explicit human carving to recover realistic textured human meshes efficiently. Extensive experimental results and quantitative evaluations on CAPE and THuman2.1 datasets demonstrate PSHumans superiority in geometry details, texture fidelity, and generalization capability.

PNR: Physics-informed Neural Representation for high-resolution LFM reconstruction

Jiayin Zhao, Zhifeng Zhao, Jiamin Wu et al.

Light field microscopy (LFM) has been widely utilized in various fields for its capability to efficiently capture high-resolution 3D scenes. Despite the rapid advancements in neural representations, there are few methods specifically tailored for microscopic scenes. Existing approaches often do not adequately address issues such as the loss of high-frequency information due to defocus and sample aberration, resulting in suboptimal performance. In addition, existing methods, including RLD, INR, and supervised U-Net, face challenges such as sensitivity to initial estimates, reliance on extensive labeled data, and low computational efficiency, all of which significantly diminish the practicality in complex biological scenarios. This paper introduces PNR (Physics-informed Neural Representation), a method for high-resolution LFM reconstruction that significantly enhances performance. Our method incorporates an unsupervised and explicit feature representation approach, resulting in a 6.1 dB improvement in PSNR than RLD. Additionally, our method employs a frequency-based training loss, enabling better recovery of high-frequency details, which leads to a reduction in LPIPS by at least half compared to SOTA methods (1.762 V.S. 3.646 of DINER). Moreover, PNR integrates a physics-informed aberration correction strategy that optimizes Zernike polynomial parameters during optimization, thereby reducing the information loss caused by aberrations and improving spatial resolution. These advancements make PNR a promising solution for long-term high-resolution biological imaging applications. Our code and dataset will be made publicly available.

SummerTime: Text Summarization Toolkit for Non-experts

Ansong Ni, Zhangir Azerbayev, Mutethia Mutuma et al.

Recent advances in summarization provide models that can generate summaries of higher quality. Such models now exist for a number of summarization tasks, including query-based summarization, dialogue summarization, and multi-document summarization. While such models and tasks are rapidly growing in the research field, it has also become challenging for non-experts to keep track of them. To make summarization methods more accessible to a wider audience, we develop SummerTime by rethinking the summarization task from the perspective of an NLP non-expert. SummerTime is a complete toolkit for text summarization, including various models, datasets and evaluation metrics, for a full spectrum of summarization-related tasks. SummerTime integrates with libraries designed for NLP researchers, and enables users with easy-to-use APIs. With SummerTime, users can locate pipeline solutions and search for the best model with their own data, and visualize the differences, all with a few lines of code. We also provide explanations for models and evaluation metrics to help users understand the model behaviors and select models that best suit their needs. Our library, along with a notebook demo, is available at https://github.com/Yale-LILY/SummerTime.

QMSum: A New Benchmark for Query-based Multi-domain Meeting Summarization

Ming Zhong, Da Yin, Tao Yu et al.

Meetings are a key component of human collaboration. As increasing numbers of meetings are recorded and transcribed, meeting summaries have become essential to remind those who may or may not have attended the meetings about the key decisions made and the tasks to be completed. However, it is hard to create a single short summary that covers all the content of a long meeting involving multiple people and topics. In order to satisfy the needs of different types of users, we define a new query-based multi-domain meeting summarization task, where models have to select and summarize relevant spans of meetings in response to a query, and we introduce QMSum, a new benchmark for this task. QMSum consists of 1,808 query-summary pairs over 232 meetings in multiple domains. Besides, we investigate a locate-then-summarize method and evaluate a set of strong summarization baselines on the task. Experimental results and manual analysis reveal that QMSum presents significant challenges in long meeting summarization for future research. Dataset is available at \url{https://github.com/Yale-LILY/QMSum}.

Did You Ask a Good Question? A Cross-Domain Question Intention Classification Benchmark for Text-to-SQL

Yusen Zhang, Xiangyu Dong, Shuaichen Chang et al.

Neural models have achieved significant results on the text-to-SQL task, in which most current work assumes all the input questions are legal and generates a SQL query for any input. However, in the real scenario, users can input any text that may not be able to be answered by a SQL query. In this work, we propose TriageSQL, the first cross-domain text-to-SQL question intention classification benchmark that requires models to distinguish four types of unanswerable questions from answerable questions. The baseline RoBERTa model achieves a 60% F1 score on the test set, demonstrating the need for further improvement on this task. Our dataset is available at https://github.com/chatc/TriageSQL.

Attacking Vision-Language Computer Agents via Pop-ups

Yanzhe Zhang, Tao Yu, Diyi Yang · gatech

Autonomous agents powered by large vision and language models (VLM) have demonstrated significant potential in completing daily computer tasks, such as browsing the web to book travel and operating desktop software, which requires agents to understand these interfaces. Despite such visual inputs becoming more integrated into agentic applications, what types of risks and attacks exist around them still remain unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that VLM agents can be easily attacked by a set of carefully designed adversarial pop-ups, which human users would typically recognize and ignore. This distraction leads agents to click these pop-ups instead of performing their tasks as usual. Integrating these pop-ups into existing agent testing environments like OSWorld and VisualWebArena leads to an attack success rate (the frequency of the agent clicking the pop-ups) of 86% on average and decreases the task success rate by 47%. Basic defense techniques, such as asking the agent to ignore pop-ups or including an advertisement notice, are ineffective against the attack.

MuonBP: Faster Muon via Block-Periodic Orthogonalization

Ahmed Khaled, Kaan Ozkara, Tao Yu et al.

Gradient orthogonalization is a simple strategy that shows great utility in speeding up gradient descent. The Muon optimizer (Jordan, Jin, et al., 2024) combines gradient orthogonalization with first-order momentum and achieves significant improvement in data efficiency over Adam/AdamW (Loshchilov and Hutter, 2019) for language model training. However, when using model parallelism, gradient orthogonalization introduces additional overhead compared to coordinate-wise optimizers (such as AdamW) due to additional gather and scatter operations on gradient matrix shards from different devices. This additional communication can amount to a throughput hit of 5%-10% compared to Adam/AdamW. To remedy this, we propose Muon with Block-Periodic Orthogonalization (MuonBP), which applies orthogonalization independently to matrix shards on each device and periodically performs full orthogonalization to maintain training stability at scale. We show how to adjust the learning rate from the baseline to MuonBP and give convergence guarantees for this algorithm. Crucially, our theory dictates that we use two stepsizes: one for the blockwise orthogonalization steps, and one for the full orthogonalization steps. Our method is simple, requires minimal hyperparameter adjustments, and achieves competitive iteration complexity compared with baseline Muon while providing per-iteration throughput comparable to coordinate-wise methods such as AdamW. When training an 8B model with eight-way tensor parallelism and ZeRO optimizer state sharding, MuonBP achieves 8% throughput increase compared to Muon with no degradation in performance.

VideoAgentTrek: Computer Use Pretraining from Unlabeled Videos

Dunjie Lu, Yiheng Xu, Junli Wang et al.

Training computer-use agents requires massive amounts of GUI interaction data, but manually annotating action trajectories at scale is prohibitively expensive. We present VideoAgentTrek, a scalable pipeline that automatically mines training data from publicly available screen-recorded videos at web scale, eliminating the need for manual annotation. Our approach addresses a key challenge: raw videos contain implicit demonstrations but lack explicit action labels. To solve this, we develop Video2Action, an inverse dynamics module (IDM) with two components: (1) a video grounding model that detects and localizes GUI actions with precise temporal boundaries and context, and (2) an action-content recognizer that extracts structured parameters like click coordinates and typed text with high fidelity. Applied to 39,000 YouTube tutorial videos, our pipeline generates 1.52 million interaction steps automatically. We leverage this data through continued pretraining followed by supervised fine-tuning. On OSWorld-Verified, our approach improves task success rates from 9.3% (SFT-only baseline) to 15.8%, a 70% relative improvement. On AgentNetBench, step accuracy increases from 64.1% to 69.3%. Our results demonstrate that passive internet videos can be transformed into high-quality supervision for computer-use agents, providing a scalable alternative to expensive manual annotation.

An Exploratory Study on Long Dialogue Summarization: What Works and What's Next

Yusen Zhang, Ansong Ni, Tao Yu et al.

Dialogue summarization helps readers capture salient information from long conversations in meetings, interviews, and TV series. However, real-world dialogues pose a great challenge to current summarization models, as the dialogue length typically exceeds the input limits imposed by recent transformer-based pre-trained models, and the interactive nature of dialogues makes relevant information more context-dependent and sparsely distributed than news articles. In this work, we perform a comprehensive study on long dialogue summarization by investigating three strategies to deal with the lengthy input problem and locate relevant information: (1) extended transformer models such as Longformer, (2) retrieve-then-summarize pipeline models with several dialogue utterance retrieval methods, and (3) hierarchical dialogue encoding models such as HMNet. Our experimental results on three long dialogue datasets (QMSum, MediaSum, SummScreen) show that the retrieve-then-summarize pipeline models yield the best performance. We also demonstrate that the summary quality can be further improved with a stronger retrieval model and pretraining on proper external summarization datasets.

Lightweight Multi-person Total Motion Capture Using Sparse Multi-view Cameras

Yuxiang Zhang, Zhe Li, Liang An et al.

Multi-person total motion capture is extremely challenging when it comes to handle severe occlusions, different reconstruction granularities from body to face and hands, drastically changing observation scales and fast body movements. To overcome these challenges above, we contribute a lightweight total motion capture system for multi-person interactive scenarios using only sparse multi-view cameras. By contributing a novel hand and face bootstrapping algorithm, our method is capable of efficient localization and accurate association of the hands and faces even on severe occluded occasions. We leverage both pose regression and keypoints detection methods and further propose a unified two-stage parametric fitting method for achieving pixel-aligned accuracy. Moreover, for extremely self-occluded poses and close interactions, a novel feedback mechanism is proposed to propagate the pixel-aligned reconstructions into the next frame for more accurate association. Overall, we propose the first light-weight total capture system and achieves fast, robust and accurate multi-person total motion capture performance. The results and experiments show that our method achieves more accurate results than existing methods under sparse-view setups.

Function4D: Real-time Human Volumetric Capture from Very Sparse Consumer RGBD Sensors

Tao Yu, Zerong Zheng, Kaiwen Guo et al.

Human volumetric capture is a long-standing topic in computer vision and computer graphics. Although high-quality results can be achieved using sophisticated off-line systems, real-time human volumetric capture of complex scenarios, especially using light-weight setups, remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a human volumetric capture method that combines temporal volumetric fusion and deep implicit functions. To achieve high-quality and temporal-continuous reconstruction, we propose dynamic sliding fusion to fuse neighboring depth observations together with topology consistency. Moreover, for detailed and complete surface generation, we propose detail-preserving deep implicit functions for RGBD input which can not only preserve the geometric details on the depth inputs but also generate more plausible texturing results. Results and experiments show that our method outperforms existing methods in terms of view sparsity, generalization capacity, reconstruction quality, and run-time efficiency.

DeepMultiCap: Performance Capture of Multiple Characters Using Sparse Multiview Cameras

We propose DeepMultiCap, a novel method for multi-person performance capture using sparse multi-view cameras. Our method can capture time varying surface details without the need of using pre-scanned template models. To tackle with the serious occlusion challenge for close interacting scenes, we combine a recently proposed pixel-aligned implicit function with parametric model for robust reconstruction of the invisible surface areas. An effective attention-aware module is designed to obtain the fine-grained geometry details from multi-view images, where high-fidelity results can be generated. In addition to the spatial attention method, for video inputs, we further propose a novel temporal fusion method to alleviate the noise and temporal inconsistencies for moving character reconstruction. For quantitative evaluation, we contribute a high quality multi-person dataset, MultiHuman, which consists of 150 static scenes with different levels of occlusions and ground truth 3D human models. Experimental results demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our method and the well generalization to real multiview video data, which outperforms the prior works by a large margin.

Local Patch AutoAugment with Multi-Agent Collaboration

Shiqi Lin, Tao Yu, Ruoyu Feng et al.

Data augmentation (DA) plays a critical role in improving the generalization of deep learning models. Recent works on automatically searching for DA policies from data have achieved great success. However, existing automated DA methods generally perform the search at the image level, which limits the exploration of diversity in local regions. In this paper, we propose a more fine-grained automated DA approach, dubbed Patch AutoAugment, to divide an image into a grid of patches and search for the joint optimal augmentation policies for the patches. We formulate it as a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) problem, where each agent learns an augmentation policy for each patch based on its content together with the semantics of the whole image. The agents cooperate with each other to achieve the optimal augmentation effect of the entire image by sharing a team reward. We show the effectiveness of our method on multiple benchmark datasets of image classification and fine-grained image recognition (e.g., CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, ImageNet, CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars and FGVC-Aircraft). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art DA methods while requiring fewer computational resources.

Vehicle Reconstruction and Texture Estimation Using Deep Implicit Semantic Template Mapping

Xiaochen Zhao, Zerong Zheng, Chaonan Ji et al.

We introduce VERTEX, an effective solution to recover 3D shape and intrinsic texture of vehicles from uncalibrated monocular input in real-world street environments. To fully utilize the template prior of vehicles, we propose a novel geometry and texture joint representation, based on implicit semantic template mapping. Compared to existing representations which infer 3D texture distribution, our method explicitly constrains the texture distribution on the 2D surface of the template as well as avoids limitations of fixed resolution and topology. Moreover, by fusing the global and local features together, our approach is capable to generate consistent and detailed texture in both visible and invisible areas. We also contribute a new synthetic dataset containing 830 elaborate textured car models labeled with sparse key points and rendered using Physically Based Rendering (PBRT) system with measured HDRI skymaps to obtain highly realistic images. Experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our approach on both testing dataset and in-the-wild images. Furthermore, the presented technique enables additional applications such as 3D vehicle texture transfer and material identification.

DeepCloth: Neural Garment Representation for Shape and Style Editing

Zhaoqi Su, Tao Yu, Yangang Wang et al.

Garment representation, editing and animation are challenging topics in the area of computer vision and graphics. It remains difficult for existing garment representations to achieve smooth and plausible transitions between different shapes and topologies. In this work, we introduce, DeepCloth, a unified framework for garment representation, reconstruction, animation and editing. Our unified framework contains 3 components: First, we represent the garment geometry with a "topology-aware UV-position map", which allows for the unified description of various garments with different shapes and topologies by introducing an additional topology-aware UV-mask for the UV-position map. Second, to further enable garment reconstruction and editing, we contribute a method to embed the UV-based representations into a continuous feature space, which enables garment shape reconstruction and editing by optimization and control in the latent space, respectively. Finally, we propose a garment animation method by unifying our neural garment representation with body shape and pose, which achieves plausible garment animation results leveraging the dynamic information encoded by our shape and style representation, even under drastic garment editing operations. To conclude, with DeepCloth, we move a step forward in establishing a more flexible and general 3D garment digitization framework. Experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art garment representation performance compared with previous methods.

Deep Implicit Templates for 3D Shape Representation

Zerong Zheng, Tao Yu, Qionghai Dai et al.

Deep implicit functions (DIFs), as a kind of 3D shape representation, are becoming more and more popular in the 3D vision community due to their compactness and strong representation power. However, unlike polygon mesh-based templates, it remains a challenge to reason dense correspondences or other semantic relationships across shapes represented by DIFs, which limits its applications in texture transfer, shape analysis and so on. To overcome this limitation and also make DIFs more interpretable, we propose Deep Implicit Templates, a new 3D shape representation that supports explicit correspondence reasoning in deep implicit representations. Our key idea is to formulate DIFs as conditional deformations of a template implicit function. To this end, we propose Spatial Warping LSTM, which decomposes the conditional spatial transformation into multiple affine transformations and guarantees generalization capability. Moreover, the training loss is carefully designed in order to achieve high reconstruction accuracy while learning a plausible template with accurate correspondences in an unsupervised manner. Experiments show that our method can not only learn a common implicit template for a collection of shapes, but also establish dense correspondences across all the shapes simultaneously without any supervision.

Semantic Evaluation for Text-to-SQL with Distilled Test Suites

We propose test suite accuracy to approximate semantic accuracy for Text-to-SQL models. Our method distills a small test suite of databases that achieves high code coverage for the gold query from a large number of randomly generated databases. We use our proposed method to evaluate 21 models submitted to the Spider leader board and manually verify that our method is always correct on 100 examples. In contrast, the current Spider metric leads to a 2.5% false negative rate on average and 8.1% in the worst case, indicating that test suite accuracy is needed. Our implementation, along with distilled test suites for eleven Text-to-SQL datasets, is publicly available.

NormalGAN: Learning Detailed 3D Human from a Single RGB-D Image

Lizhen Wang, Xiaochen Zhao, Tao Yu et al.

We propose NormalGAN, a fast adversarial learning-based method to reconstruct the complete and detailed 3D human from a single RGB-D image. Given a single front-view RGB-D image, NormalGAN performs two steps: front-view RGB-D rectification and back-view RGBD inference. The final model was then generated by simply combining the front-view and back-view RGB-D information. However, inferring backview RGB-D image with high-quality geometric details and plausible texture is not trivial. Our key observation is: Normal maps generally encode much more information of 3D surface details than RGB and depth images. Therefore, learning geometric details from normal maps is superior than other representations. In NormalGAN, an adversarial learning framework conditioned by normal maps is introduced, which is used to not only improve the front-view depth denoising performance, but also infer the back-view depth image with surprisingly geometric details. Moreover, for texture recovery, we remove shading information from the front-view RGB image based on the refined normal map, which further improves the quality of the back-view color inference. Results and experiments on both testing data set and real captured data demonstrate the superior performance of our approach. Given a consumer RGB-D sensor, NormalGAN can generate the complete and detailed 3D human reconstruction results in 20 fps, which further enables convenient interactive experiences in telepresence, AR/VR and gaming scenarios.

Adaptive Interaction Modeling via Graph Operations Search

Haoxin Li, Wei-Shi Zheng, Yu Tao et al.

Interaction modeling is important for video action analysis. Recently, several works design specific structures to model interactions in videos. However, their structures are manually designed and non-adaptive, which require structures design efforts and more importantly could not model interactions adaptively. In this paper, we automate the process of structures design to learn adaptive structures for interaction modeling. We propose to search the network structures with differentiable architecture search mechanism, which learns to construct adaptive structures for different videos to facilitate adaptive interaction modeling. To this end, we first design the search space with several basic graph operations that explicitly capture different relations in videos. We experimentally demonstrate that our architecture search framework learns to construct adaptive interaction modeling structures, which provides more understanding about the relations between the structures and some interaction characteristics, and also releases the requirement of structures design efforts. Additionally, we show that the designed basic graph operations in the search space are able to model different interactions in videos. The experiments on two interaction datasets show that our method achieves competitive performance with state-of-the-arts.

MulayCap: Multi-layer Human Performance Capture Using A Monocular Video Camera

Zhaoqi Su, Weilin Wan, Tao Yu et al.

We introduce MulayCap, a novel human performance capture method using a monocular video camera without the need for pre-scanning. The method uses "multi-layer" representations for geometry reconstruction and texture rendering, respectively. For geometry reconstruction, we decompose the clothed human into multiple geometry layers, namely a body mesh layer and a garment piece layer. The key technique behind is a Garment-from-Video (GfV) method for optimizing the garment shape and reconstructing the dynamic cloth to fit the input video sequence, based on a cloth simulation model which is effectively solved with gradient descent. For texture rendering, we decompose each input image frame into a shading layer and an albedo layer, and propose a method for fusing a fixed albedo map and solving for detailed garment geometry using the shading layer. Compared with existing single view human performance capture systems, our "multi-layer" approach bypasses the tedious and time consuming scanning step for obtaining a human specific mesh template. Experimental results demonstrate that MulayCap produces realistic rendering of dynamically changing details that has not been achieved in any previous monocular video camera systems. Benefiting from its fully semantic modeling, MulayCap can be applied to various important editing applications, such as cloth editing, re-targeting, relighting, and AR applications.

Moreover, a non-rigid volumetric deformation method is proposed to continuously refine the learned shape prior. Finally, a lightweight bundle adjustment algorithm is proposed to guarantee that all the partial scans can not only "loop" with each other but also remain consistent with the selected live key observations. 4D Association Graph for Realtime Multi-person Motion Capture Using Multiple Video Cameras

This paper contributes a novel realtime multi-person motion capture algorithm using multiview video inputs. Due to the heavy occlusions in each view, joint optimization on the multiview images and multiple temporal frames is indispensable, which brings up the essential challenge of realtime efficiency. To this end, for the first time, we unify per-view parsing, cross-view matching, and temporal tracking into a single optimization framework, i.e., a 4D association graph that each dimension (image space, viewpoint and time) can be treated equally and simultaneously. To solve the 4D association graph efficiently, we further contribute the idea of 4D limb bundle parsing based on heuristic searching, followed with limb bundle assembling by proposing a bundle Kruskal's algorithm. Our method enables a realtime online motion capture system running at 30fps using 5 cameras on a 5-person scene. Benefiting from the unified parsing, matching and tracking constraints, our method is robust to noisy detection, and achieves high-quality online pose reconstruction quality. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art method quantitatively without using high-level appearance information. We also contribute a multiview video dataset synchronized with a marker-based motion capture system for scientific evaluation.

CoSQL: A Conversational Text-to-SQL Challenge Towards Cross-Domain Natural Language Interfaces to Databases

Tao Yu, Rui Zhang, He Yang Er et al.

We present CoSQL, a corpus for building cross-domain, general-purpose database (DB) querying dialogue systems. It consists of 30k+ turns plus 10k+ annotated SQL queries, obtained from a Wizard-of-Oz (WOZ) collection of 3k dialogues querying 200 complex DBs spanning 138 domains. Each dialogue simulates a real-world DB query scenario with a crowd worker as a user exploring the DB and a SQL expert retrieving answers with SQL, clarifying ambiguous questions, or otherwise informing of unanswerable questions. When user questions are answerable by SQL, the expert describes the SQL and execution results to the user, hence maintaining a natural interaction flow. CoSQL introduces new challenges compared to existing task-oriented dialogue datasets:(1) the dialogue states are grounded in SQL, a domain-independent executable representation, instead of domain-specific slot-value pairs, and (2) because testing is done on unseen databases, success requires generalizing to new domains. CoSQL includes three tasks: SQL-grounded dialogue state tracking, response generation from query results, and user dialogue act prediction. We evaluate a set of strong baselines for each task and show that CoSQL presents significant challenges for future research. The dataset, baselines, and leaderboard will be released at https://yale-lily.github.io/cosql.

We provide an in-depth analysis of SParC and show that it introduces new challenges compared to existing datasets. Tao Yu, Zerong Zheng, Yuan Zhong et al.

This paper proposes a new method for live free-viewpoint human performance capture with dynamic details (e.g., cloth wrinkles) using a single RGBD camera. Our main contributions are: (i) a multi-layer representation of garments and body, and (ii) a physics-based performance capture procedure. We first digitize the performer using multi-layer surface representation, which includes the undressed body surface and separate clothing meshes. For performance capture, we perform skeleton tracking, cloth simulation, and iterative depth fitting sequentially for the incoming frame. By incorporating cloth simulation into the performance capture pipeline, we can simulate plausible cloth dynamics and cloth-body interactions even in the occluded regions, which was not possible in previous capture methods. Moreover, by formulating depth fitting as a physical process, our system produces cloth tracking results consistent with the depth observation while still maintaining physical constraints. Results and evaluations show the effectiveness of our method. Our method also enables new types of applications such as cloth retargeting, free-viewpoint video rendering and animations.

Knowledge-based Fully Convolutional Network and Its Application in Segmentation of Lung CT Images

Tao Yu, Yu Qiao, Huan Long

A variety of deep neural networks have been applied in medical image segmentation and achieve good performance. Unlike natural images, medical images of the same imaging modality are characterized by the same pattern, which indicates that same normal organs or tissues locate at similar positions in the images. Thus, in this paper we try to incorporate the prior knowledge of medical images into the structure of neural networks such that the prior knowledge can be utilized for accurate segmentation. Based on this idea, we propose a novel deep network called knowledge-based fully convolutional network (KFCN) for medical image segmentation. The segmentation function and corresponding error is analyzed. We show the existence of an asymptotically stable region for KFCN which traditional FCN doesn't possess. Experiments validate our knowledge assumption about the incorporation of prior knowledge into the convolution kernels of KFCN and show that KFCN can achieve a reasonable segmentation and a satisfactory accuracy.

DoubleFusion: Real-time Capture of Human Performances with Inner Body Shapes from a Single Depth Sensor

Tao Yu, Zerong Zheng, Kaiwen Guo et al.

We propose DoubleFusion, a new real-time system that combines volumetric dynamic reconstruction with data-driven template fitting to simultaneously reconstruct detailed geometry, non-rigid motion and the inner human body shape from a single depth camera. One of the key contributions of this method is a double layer representation consisting of a complete parametric body shape inside, and a gradually fused outer surface layer. A pre-defined node graph on the body surface parameterizes the non-rigid deformations near the body, and a free-form dynamically changing graph parameterizes the outer surface layer far from the body, which allows more general reconstruction. We further propose a joint motion tracking method based on the double layer representation to enable robust and fast motion tracking performance. Moreover, the inner body shape is optimized online and forced to fit inside the outer surface layer. Overall, our method enables increasingly denoised, detailed and complete surface reconstructions, fast motion tracking performance and plausible inner body shape reconstruction in real-time. In particular, experiments show improved fast motion tracking and loop closure performance on more challenging scenarios.
